P17 How to shim the primary wet clutch on the Harley Davidson Golf Cart for a new belt

Here I show how to shim the primary wet clutch for a new belt. The tolerance for the belt/clutch is .040" to .060" so I shoot for .050" to put it in the middle. The cart was trying to move while it was being started, this can put a lot of stress on the starter/generator. After it was shimmed, the cart stayed in place while idling and as soon as you tap the throttle then cart should move. This was a success! Cart runs great now.

are you able to give me guidance. I have a golf cart like this and it is idling but the clutch won't engage. It might need the shim adjusted but hoping it is something easier.

The clutch shouldn't be engaged at idle, just off idle and wide open throttle. If not engaging then, I would say either the belt is loose (needs shimmed) or is wore out. Hopefully there isn't an issue in the clutch itself. It's hard to trouble shoot without seeing it.

Great video man. Do you know the differences between earlier 6 spline drive cup assemblies and later. I might have a mismatch since the ones I have seem to need to pressed on the shaft and the one I removed required lots of heat and copious amounts of impactiing on a 3 jaw puller to get off, not rusted on and a fairly recent resto. Thought I was gonna have to turn it to liquid to get off. 😬

Thanks, I do not, from what I understood is there was a 9 spline (63-71) and a 6 spline (71-81). All the parts manuals and service manuals I have only show these two versions. I will say it don't sound like something is right though, it shouldn't take that much to get it off. However I have only worked on a few of these so far and they have been relatively easy, no heat but did use a puller. I'm curious why yours was that stubborn to get off?

@@SABsGarage I am too. Definitely not right. Seen different options on the vintage cart parts website and had 2 different ones for 6 spline. Been doing some light filing to debur and even out high spots but the shaft looks really good. May be aftermarket and a hair larger. I'll keep working on it and find out something. Thanks
