I got best grading(in our school system)from Welding of pipelines for special systems thanks to you! This following text is from my teacher who was making sure that i do the test/show off correctly "The student has good welding skills for TIG welding; The enthusiasm for this work is high. The student has practiced stainless steel welding in the metal workshop as agreed and performed a certification weld, which has been inspected both visually and with radiography. The certification weld has been approved, and the welding quality is good."

Tip for laying out #2 - use a piece of round tubing with the same wall thickness as your square tube and radius of the finished part, trace the inside diameter then roll it 90deg to find the end of the cutout. Takes all the math out of it and justifies that pile of small offcuts you've accumulated. You can do a smaller radius than the tube size (ex 1.5"r in 2" tubing) if you taper both sides of the cut off at 45deg. For a radius larger than the tube size it gets complicated.

Mitered joints are almost a lost art. There are a number of reprints of layouts of various mitered joints. When I taught mechanical drawing, I would have my students develop various miters and intersections. I would then select one or two and actually lay out the joint; and, cut and fit the joint. I would have them do the drawings at a 1:1 scale so that I could cut out the drawing for the template. I used this as an exercise to show them how to take an idea that they thought of, draw it on paper, and then turn it into reality.

just a tip when doing a lobster back like this, drill out the root of the fold and cut up to that. Leaves the sidewall completely intact and gives it a natural radius to distribute over.

It is not that they can't, they simply don't need to. None of these joints were very practical unless it is simply for art. By the way, in the '90s I worked at a factory in the cornfields of Nebraska where every weld was inspected by UL and certified, some even got x-rayed. They used material from as small as .22 gauge to 4" thick starting mostly from flat sheet but also certified 70,000 and 100,000 psi steel tubing, round and flat which we had to purchase and entire factory heat at a time to get certified. They had grandmothers who fed the animals and kids before coming to work where they would proceed to produce welds that constantly amazed me. Even the worst slackers they had would put you to shame. One character they had built outrigger arms that consisted of two 2" thick steel plates about 14" wide and 92" long separated by an approx. 16"H x 11"W x .375" tube. He would fixture it up and stretch a string along the width so everyone could see the warping occur as he laid in twelve triple pass beads. When he was done the finished outrigger beam was designed to have a slight downward bow which would be perfectly straight after stress relief (2 x load). I guess art is in the eye of the beholder but, working with those guys and gals made me proud. Well, until 4:30pm.

Instead of cutting triangle/wedges, the peaks of which are like tiny seeds that blossom into "Hunter" trees!( If you don't get the crack joke, ask a smart friend to bring over the crayons.) , BEFORE cutting drill holes (double your blade thickness) where the peaks would otherwise be, and cut into the holes. The holes also provide a good compression spot during folding and a great place to pool the "sauce"!
