After digging into the world of packet radio BBS's over the past few weeks, I'm ready to show you how to setup your own. The video will take you through hosting your own LinBPQ (A Linux version of BPQ32, both by John Wiseman G8BPQ) node on Ubuntu, Debian or Raspbian OS.
We also configure the node with the bpq32.cfg file to report to APRS, as well as talk to either direwolf or a hardware KISS TNC. Then I show an example of using your node to connect to other nodes over HF packet.
The text guide used for commands in the video:

I run a BPQ32 node, and have been wanting to switch to LinBPQ. All the documentation online is full of holes and is confusing. You did a great job, and I'm looking forward to finally having a 100 percent Linux shack. Thank you!

I hope you can put it to use. You can connect to my node if you get an HF station up!

Hello, I'm very impressed with a big thank you for sharing this tutorials. I'm relative new to linux but I'm getting there. Running a Raspberry Pi 4B and it's used as a small light webserver but mostly for ham stuff. I started configuring APRS with hardware TNC, next I discovered direwolf and got that working. After bumping into your tutorials (by luck I guess) I started from scratch and I must say your devotion to help other hams is fantastic. I made me setting up the complete LINBPQ with BBS; chat, telnet, html. The only hope was getting vara fm to work but I installed a 64-bit system and it seems that wine and vara needs to be 32-bit as I understand from searching the internet. Maybe I need to do this all over again? Thanks and keep up these great videos. I subscribed to this channel ;-) Cheers and 73, Phil ON4VP (EU, Belgium)

Glad I could help! irecently got VARA working with all of this, and sharing it with direwolf on Linux wasn't easy. I'll make a video on it probably next month. But it was an involved process.

I was having issues with USB TNCs where the address of the USB Serial devices were sequentially assigned. Depending on what I had connected to the Raspi, the TNC would not always be in the same "place". Sometimes ACM0 sometimes ACM1 etc. Not a big deal if there is only ever going to be one TNC connected. That said, I experiment a lot. So rather than referencing /dev/ACM0, I started using the "by-id" of the TNC as listed in /dev/serial/by-id/. The name of the USB Serial is unique and will always be the same no matter physical configuration. Keep in mind that if you are using two identical TNCs, the by-id will still be sequential.

Let me know if anyone runs into issues with the commands, and I will fix up the blog post! You are free to test your configuration by trying to connect to my node over HF if you can reach me. 14.105LSB 1600:1800 KN4MKB-7.

Thank you again for the clear guide :) We're using Linux Mint and were having trouble with this package, it can't be located: libminiupnpc17:i386 I whizzed up a Ubuntu VM to verify it's not specific to Mint and it's the same in that too. The zlib1g:i386 package installs OK so i386 architecture is definitely activated, just seems like it's not available as a 32bit package from Debian. From the looks of it the package is for Internet Gateways so it shouldn't stop us from getting Radio-only BBS systems going :)

Glad you were able to do some troubleshooting to try and figure it out. The VM I used in the video was a brand new Debian 12 server that I had just installed sudo on and added a user. Only one source online has recommended the installation of these packages, and the official Docs didn't mention it so hopefully it isn't needed.
