I bought a farady bag for my smartphone in June 2021. After using it for a while I stopped using it. Now that I'm using it again, the farady bag doesn't always work, actually. The bag has not been wet or damaged! Are different frequencies used than a few years ago? Does the protection expire after a few years?

It isn`t a problem at all - when you have an access in a yard and rent an apartments at the 1 floor. But if you living in a flat, that exists in 9 storey building, the nearest tree is far from your windows, and building has a shape of letter "L" (when you see on the roof).I have not any license, I only have 1W transmitter for experiments .I experimented with short antennas (I living on the 4 floor) that had been installed on a balcony (in external side). At the distance 60Meters on the 2460 KHz my receiver indicated 2 puncts (15microVolts). When I was in shadow - behind an another building - the signal fall until 1-2 microVolts.

Great introduction to packet radio. I noted some inaccuracies (DAPPA vs. DARPA, PRNET vs. ARPANET, and a few others), but none of them took away from the great information you put together. I agree totally that, while there is a ton of information out there on packet, most of it is irrelevant or outdated, or mandates that you use hardware from 30 years ago (which, while you can sometimes find, isn't well enough documented to actually use). Also, yeah, I'm not sure what's up with amateur radio web sites being designed in the mid-90s... were they converted "gopher" pages that somehow made it onto the www? Sheesh. I'm looking forward to wading through the rest of the series and checking out your resources. One suggestion, when you post a bunch of links in your presentation, drop them in the (text) description of the video, too, so they are easier to follow.

Your developing well from your first shows. Dont look at them! That is the way it is for everyone save professional journalist and people who have shifted from TV or radio...Why Files (he was professional DJ and TV show presenter but is a very good journalist. He clearly has either a awesome staff or has formal education or both.... A script and teleprompter helps every body - even if it's just like an outline to help you remember every point or if you've actually written it out completely. I'm a lawyer so when I give appete briefs, I normally just use an outline and make sure I hit all my points and have it drilled down to just cue cards because you want to keep an eye contact with the judges you just want to know your issue completely and be ready for any question and then when you're in court that's a whole different set of circumstances it's completely dynamic and potentially very fluid again you still have to know your issue and have done your homework.

Love the video! Quick question would it be safe to connect the RTL-SDR directly to a waveform function generator using say a BNC-SMA cable (and avoid using an antenna). I'm just trying to test the software aspect + functioning of the RTL-SDR.

Haha, did you say ‘bladder infection’? 😅 I’m in my 50’s and only just started using FT8, didn’t think I’d like it but it’s addictive. Agree with what you said and most of the comments, it’s just another mode and is a good way for people to communicate especially that live in restricting conditions. Simplex Gateways on VHF/UHF also get some stick as being “not proper radio” but again, some guy living in a tower block that cannot install yagis, wires and verticals can talk around the world. How that can be a bad thing I do not know but a minority of people have a massive ego in this hobby. Anyway, enjoy yourself and thanks for the informative video. 73

So these Linux tutorials come with an assumption you know some of the basics of Linux, as you will need to know them to perform maintenance and updates on your reflector into the future. This means you probably need to install "make" or "sudo" depending on which wasn't found. The video installs both, so one of the install commands must have errored out. You will need to figure out which one and why, as almost all flavors of all Linux distros can come with their own quirks sometimes. You will need to diagnose these little error messages in the future if you intend on up-keeping the reflector, so I would dig in and figure out why the install failed for one of those packages.

Explore RAIN GUTTEER ANTENNAS =) Plastic ...... metal RAIN GUTTER ANTENNA is metal ( I used an "S" hook to connect and LONG WIRE CONNECTION on the ANTENNA TUNER ) .... if plastic RAIN GUTTER ANTENNA just lay a like color wire in the gutter =) If you are lucky enough to have an second or above ground HAM SHACK location ALWAYS USE AN Artifical Ground Tuner and a 88 foot long coil of wire around a 2" PVC plastic Pipe and TAPE the un-connected wire end very well ....... worked many contents on 5 watts on PSK-31 for years ( yep even FT-8 a few /-)

Really soft closed cell foam works well to fill gaps under windows where regular sized coax is running. I've had a couple rg58 running out of a second floor window for about a year and so far it's worked fine.

The flat/micro coax pass through works well to get from inside your window out … but you also often have the option of putting your EFHW or EFRW (9:1) transformer right inside your window and routing the actual antenna wire past the window frame. That’s especially useful if you’re on a higher floor and you don’t have access to the window from outside of your apartment. It’s also quite stealth. It sounds like it might not work, but because the wire is routed perpendicular to the window frame, and bc the width of the frame is such a low % of a wavelength at HF frequencies, it can actually work well. If you do that, I suggest that you consider taking strain off of the insulation within the window frame. I’ve done this by placing a small cable clamp on the antenna wire, right outside of the window, that routes a thin piece of black bankline back inside… and I have that tied off to a sturdy attachment point. This keeps the antenna wire from pulling on the transformer box directly. You can route the wire counterpoise the same way (e.g., hanging straight downwards from your window), or if you have no other option just choke your coax after some feet, inside the apartment. I do this, and I have no RFI issues even on a 100w rig. But a choke is mandatory at some point before you get to the rig for anything not QRP. Also, I have had success using a 1lb counterweight instead of tying off the end of your antenna. This allows the trees to flex without too much worry, as the weight will shift up or down as needed. Bungee+counterweight is probably even better. 9:1 is great if you have a tuner, and reduces the need for you to stress about trimming for perfect resonance. Finally, I recommend 26awg Polystealth, which has a 25# breaking strength-plenty, even in high winds, in my experience. Regular copper is probably not tough enough to last, and anything with greater breaking strength is probably a bigger hazard. Polystealth also has abrasion resistant and reflection-resistant coating. Just a few extra tips for peeps to consider. Good luck!

So as long as a Data Controller is connected to a radio that is powered on and receiving, the Data Controller is essentially brokering connections and storing messages received until you retrieve them with the C64? No internet/telnet/anything else is required, right? It's really cool that this technology existed in the 80's, and as a fan of vintage computing, your video is inspiring me to replicate a similar setup. I'm curious what frequency your radio is tuned too, or does the software control this via CAT or equivalent? I imagine you're tuned to some freq in the data portion of a band, but is there a 'known' freq for Packet Radio much like there is for JS8 Call? Do these things transmit on occasion to entice/enable others to find your Data Controller? Thank you so much!
@ModernHam
@ModernHam Ай бұрын
My radio is tuned to 14.105LSB with tones 1600 and 1800 at a speed of 300, which is the most active frequency for HF packet radio. You are correct in your assumptions about the role of the TNC and the C64. I've got a whole packet radio series on KZfaq now that will show you how to connect with modern technology using software based TNCs such as Direwolf. That will give you an idea of how to replicate a retro setup as well. Typically there are Beacons setup to transmit in intervals to let people know your node is there to use. Modern solutions also include text based games, internet website forwarding through the terminal and much more.
@hetzkr
@hetzkr 29 күн бұрын
@@ModernHam Thanks for the response; while I'd love to get dirty with Direwolf, there's just something incredibly nostalgic and appealing to using vintage electronics. None the less, I'll check out DW! Re: tones, I imagine that's something you configure on the TNC and must be unique (as in no other nodes on freq are using them?) Sidenote: Will definitely be checking out your packet radio series. Thanks again, 73's!
