Packing for 1 Night Wild Camping
**** TOILET SITUATION - TAKE A SMALL TROWEL AND SOME LOO ROLL - IN CASE YOU'RE CAUGHT SHORT !!!! :-) ****
In this video, I show what I pack for a typical wild camp for one night. Of course, these videos are entirely subjective and you may agree or disagree with what I take and why.
Hopefully this helps people who are just getting started and may give an idea of some of the items which you will need.
Remember to look after our Great Outdoors and leave no trace

Very informative and insightful, for the experienced and newcomers alike. I recently went on Derwent edge starting at cutthroat bridge and traipsed up to cakes of bread on a hot but windy day, carrying a 32 pound pack. It was my first time out for ages and nearly killed me!! Weight is a definite consideration even on shorter hikes. I won't be going over 25 pound in the future, it's just not funny lugging all that weight, yeah you've got a level of comfort when you're set up but the effort to get there means you're too knackered to enjoy it. It's a balancing act and everybody's different in strength, fitness, stamina etc. Thanks for all the great vids Chris and more of the same please!
@MCMOutdoors
@MCMOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Agree John, it's a trade off like you say. Ultralight - enjoy the walk up more - easier - but less comfort around camp (although I'm sure people would scream out that this is nonsense and that ultralight doesn't equal uncomfortable) or take a heavier pack with a few more luxuries for on the top. I need to get fit again, so taking a heavier pack will help out. ATB

Recommend to put that med kit into the top flap of the sack. Pulling it out at the very end is a no go. Let's say you're still hiking in to camp and you get an injury...you'd have to rummage through the whole pack just to get to the med kit. That piece of kit should be one of the most easy to find and accessable pieces of kit you carry.

Good balanced view as ever mate. Go light, go heavy, do what you like. Some folk obsess about weight to the point of madness (my mate saws off his toothbrush handles) others have 18 kg full of crap. From experience, I tend to go slightly heavy and have lightweight back up on things like headtorch, titanium stove, lighters and the like. A lot of the lads I’ve climbed/walked with tend to go very light. Very very narrow margins for error on that approach. ATB. 👍

Great stuff Chris. I've down sized my pack recently which has really helped with the weight. I bough the Atmos 50 and a kestrel 48 which are ideal for me. I still take my beers and 2 litres of water and i think i'm carrying just over 2 stn which isn't to bad. Your right though it makes you so much fitter carrying more weight. My legs are so much stronger than what they were before. Look forward to your next vid mate

Great vid Chris. Personally, would love you to take the Nord tent for a good work out. Keen to see a good, considered review. It looks an awesome bit of kit. Good load out. I am a massive Fjallraven fan. Currently got the Keb 52. Done me proud here in the UK and whilst backpacking around Vietnam and Thailand. Agree with the comment about tent in a dry bag. I use the Ortleib PS10 with valve. Keeps everything in place and compressed.

Timely video as I am about to go this weekend for an overnighter. Amazing how similar your packing is to mine and how much of your equipment is the same as I take,( the x therm, Soulo, long spoon, fire starter, tent light, etc are exactly same as mine). Ok, so you gave me the name of the tent light before when I was looking for one, but you get the gist. By the way, if you have a slow puncture in your air pad, fill the bath half way, soft inflate the air pad, stick it in the bath til you find a string of air bubbles and you have located the puncture. Similar idea to a bike puncture, but bigger scale. Normally an easy fix from there.
@MCMOutdoors
@MCMOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate - believe it or not, I've tried that method, soapy sponge etc too to check for bubbles - and for the life of me I cannot locate the leak - I'm wondering if it's from the valve assembly. I'll be sending it back to Ireland next week - so fingers crossed for a solution. Enjoy your overnighter mate - ATB, Chris

Totes for the midge net. Have had so many trips wrecked with the bastard midge. I will add though, as somebody told me; Were it not for the humble midge, our limited wild lands would be ruined by callous and untidy campers. Food for thought. Still hate them though. Hoping to make a video tomorrow with me and my chihuahua service dog going camping next to the sea. I have insane anxiety issues among many other problems so I’m totally dreading it lol but I know I’ll feel good about myself afterwards plus hopefully me and my pooch will have great fun in the process ^_^

Also, although I live in the city so the most isolate places i can get to still have a lot of people (although I now have a little camouflage tent so gun try to hid it behind the tread and overgrown bushes etc so no one sees it then I can spend time on the beach during the day etc :) I have a fire log to start off a fire (not sure it’s allowed but people do it there all the time so hopefully fine, there’s plenty of premade fire pits (surround by bricks etc) plus they’re on beach so not hard to get water if a fire needs quickly put out :) I also have fire lighters for bbqs so I can make a food-safe fire too. Omg so excited! Only problem is I keep putting it off due to anxiety :( But when I wake up outside I feel really paranoid cuz don’t want anyone seeing me but at same time I wake up with WAAAAAAAAAAY😡 less anxiety Than when I’m at home then need to go out 0_o

Petty, I know, but i nearly had a fit when you pulled that gas canister out of your main bag compartment and held it over the Titan kettle which is perfectly compatible with standard bottled gas lol The cartridge will sit perfectly inside the pot, or rest very nicely on the indents in the top of the lid if space inside the pot itself is at a premium.

Thanks Henrik, I guess the Hilleberg brand is known for the steep costs but as you say, quality gear. A top bloke has sent us a Nordisk Oppland 3 LW - and we cannot wait to use it - looks like more top quality Scandinavian gear. I love the Scandinavian culture and the gear - the attention to detail is very high and I appreciate that. ATB - Chris

Wet wipes .......... toilet and general clean ups combined. And usually a 2 or 3 cotton balls soaked in hand sanitizer for easy fire starting. Was gonna ask about water supply as its been puzzling me .... i guess you dont know till you go once to spec out the area. There could be a pub or a public toilet with taps at the start of your trail. Planning to go by motorcycle so wont have the luxury of a car boot for any non essentials.

So correct, ultralight kit does not give you the same workout and .... ultralight bags can let you down, as happened to me on the West highland way! Still waiting for my Singi 48, cannot wait! I love side pockets which are out of fashion with the mainstream manufacturers! The one thing not to go ultralight weight with is the backpack, that is absolutely a game stopper if it fails! All is lost!

Trowel, toilet paper, wet wipes. I was looking at buying a trowel. I've seen Deuce of Spades being recommended, but couldn't find it anywhere. Found a Sea to Summit trowel, but it was €30(!), so I ended up buying a plastic garden trowel for €1 at the closest dollar store and shortened the handle to not be too cumbersome. Will probably do the trick just fine.

You pulled out your first aid kit last,....It is supposed to be on top or in an external pocket. I was messing around camping with a knife doing some dumb things I saw on KZfaq and cut myself really good a few years back LOL. Got blood on almost all my gear trying to retrieve the first aid kit. So I did it, and I'm not being negative. In the army it has to be marked to show its location,... you may not want sticky tape on your bag,...but anyone with you should know where it is and it should be very easy to find if someone finds you incapacitated.

MCM Outdoors I’ll have a look cheers. Be ideal for me that in the wagon as I have the night heater on for the majority of the night and I’m not having to slog a big bag round with me. As for the wild camping I probably only get 1or2 in through the warmer months anyway so it’ll be another boxed ticked for those occasions 👍🏻👍🏻
