I would have loved to have been able to do the DofE awards scheme but never had the chance. I left school 25 years ago and they only really started doing it at my old school in the last 10 years. Instead, I have spent the past 6 or 7 years researching and optimizing everything for a solo hike from John O'Groats to Lands End, climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell, and Snowdon on route. It is very good that you mention that people should only take what is essential, though after reading about the experience of some DofE participants and leaders, I would mention that hair-dryers, hair straighteners, and hand-held computer games are not essential. One thing I would change is that you suggested 60 to 80-litre rucksacks at the top of the video. I have found in my own experience that if you have free space in a rucksack, you will invariably try and fill it with something, thus making the pack heavier. Also, larger capacity rucksacks will typically be heavier than lower capacity rucksacks. So my suggestion would be that a person should only take items that are "Essential" to the expedition and then get a rucksack just big enough to carry all of those essential items but not so big as to allow extra space. The last thing is that people should be taught how to have a rucksack properly fitted. Many times I have seen people carrying rucksacks with very loose shoulder straps causing the rucksack weight to be halfway down their back. A rucksack properly fitted can make everything being carried feel like half of the true weight, while a badly fitted rucksack will make everything feel double its weight. Other than that, a very useful and informative video :)

Good video, I would recommend however putting the spare clothing into a dry bag if it's own, the tent will just soke them if it's bad weather. Also with the tent why not brake it down, put the poles and pegs on the outside and stuff the tent into a dry bag and put at the top of the pack. It's going to be the first and last thing out anyway. That's just my way of doing it, perhaps this way works best for you

Can you use a bin bag to keep your bag waterproof
@leehouston43956 жыл бұрын
Marisa Mistry many people do this, however they tend to rip really easily and aren’t the most waterproof. I’d suggest a rubble sack from B&Q, they’re a bit harder wearing and waterproof.

What size Dry Bag would you suggest getting for a roll mat?

@harrygreen20646 жыл бұрын
Experience Expeditions no it's a self inflating roll mat
@experienceexpeditions51506 жыл бұрын
Best to keep it inside your bag to avoid it getting damaged. Instead of individual dry bags you could get a survival bag (which you'll need anyway) and use that as a rucksack liner which will keep everything in your bag dry.

Having the roll mat on the bottom of the bag can lead to issues with stiles. Having it at the top or vertically down the front avoids it.

If u didn’t have enough room inside, how would you strap the tent on ?
@experienceexpeditions51506 жыл бұрын
If it is not possible to fit everything in there is normally parts of the bag with adjustable straps/clips, meaning the tent can be strapped to the sides or bottom of the bag. Make sure it is tightened properly to avoid it falling off half way through the walk! You may want to put the tent inside a dry bag or rubble sack as mentioned in the video to keep it dry if its outside of the bag. Hope this helps!

@ItsN0tAJ Жыл бұрын
I dont know why im watching this right after i came back from my bronze d of e
@migranthawker29526 жыл бұрын
So, in the morning, after a wet night, you're packing the tent inside the dry liner of the rucksack? After a day of rain, you have to get everything else out before you can get at the tent? This is not good advice!!!
@experienceexpeditions51506 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, we didn't mention it in the video but if the tent is wet then it can be kept outside of the dry bag when packed away again in the morning. With regards to the tent being at the bottom when needing to set it up after a day of rain the benefits of having the weight distributed correctly in you bag while walking outweighs the additional seconds it may take to get the tent from the bottom of the bag, when packed correctly the tent can still be reached and taken out without having to remove all of the other kit.
