Pad or Underquilt on a Warbonnet Ridgerunner Hammock?

Pads and underquilts each have strengths and weaknesses when used on Warbonnet's Ridgerunner hammock. I run through my experiences and thoughts about why I might prefer one over the other depending on the circumstances.
If you know of additional factors or have different experiences, please share them in the comments.

For hammock camping I've gone to using 'reflectix' as an insulating pad. You can get it cheap at most Home Improvement stores. I get the 16" wide and use the reflectix tape to join 2 pieces together, This allows it to conform easily and gives you a full 32" of coverage. and rolled up to 16" for carrying. Super lightweight and won't absorb water. A decent sleeping bag with this and I have slept comfortable in the low 20's in the Blue Ridge Mountains of NE TN, NC and SE VA with no underquilt.

I've wondered about that. Do you get any moisture buildup?

@@lakeeffected None in temperatures below freezing, a little above freezing that can be eliminated with a light wool blanket above it.

I like using an insulated pad with the Ridgerunner. I generally find it more comfortable than without the pad. However, though cold spots around the shoulders you mention can be an issue. I thought maybe the down sleeves from Jacks R Better would be worth a try to supplement the pad but haven't sprung for them yet.

The down sleeves are an interesting idea. Thanks!

After a couple years of my RR, I much prefer a pad in every way except the occasional clamminess of a pad. That said, I will put up with that very occasional issue for me because 100% of the time with a quilt I get shoulder squeeze. Also, I'm definitely an anomaly but I actually had a heckuva time with my suspension so my quilt and was always cold due to a faulty suspension but the company gave me a full refund. I probably should have bought a Warbonnet off the hop but c'est la vie. It's likely either way I would have had the squeeze issue regardless since that's the RR, not the quilt.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the pad helping alleviate shoulder squeeze. That wasn't something I could talk about definitively.

@@lakeeffected All gotta help each other! I appreciate you doing a video about it. In hindsight now, I wish I had spent more nights in it when I was living in the tropics when I didn't need any insulation. That would have told me the shoulder squeeze would be an issue or me and saved me a lot of hassle with the UQ and some sleepless nights. Now I know I like a thick insulated pad that's partially deflated.

Thanks for sharing! I just bought an RR and am now looking at adding an UQ. I'll probably hold off for a while and try my existing pads (or nothing) to see how my shoulders get on with it. I've so far just lazed about in it in my backyard and didn't feel too much squeeze, but I probably didn't give it enough time.

@@matte-d349 I tried several pads and found the wider versions work best for my sleep. Partially deflated makes it softer for back or side sleep, rigid makes it more like a bed if you stomach sleep. My go to pads are Exped Downmat7 or Downmat9. I tried an Exped Lite version but it doesn't work well with a quilt as it has baffles the require insulation underneath although it works well to keep me cooler in hot summer. All of my pads are 25 inches wide, anything more narrow and it's cold shoulders in cooler weather. I've used the Downmat9 down to -25 Celsius amd been toasty warm with a -30 sleeping bag.

So, if you shove an air mattress between the layers of the double layer Ridgerunner, you can't use pad straps with your top quilt. How do you keep the quilt from turning with you if you change positions and creating air gaps?

Interesting question. I've not had that problem, so I may not be qualified to answer that. Maybe someone else can. I don't use a pad when it's truly cold. I also sleep on my back in hammocks, maybe cocked a little to one side or the other. I suppose if you're camping in cold condition with a pad, a sleeping bag would prevent that. I just slept out in 20F using an underquilt and a top quilt, again, not clipped to anything, and had no problem.

Thermarest actually states in their inflatableb pad videos that there isn't any evidence to support blowing directly into an inflatable mattress harms it in any way.

@@lakeeffected I saw it while watching a thermarest channel video on the NeoAir Xlite. Surprise me too. I love that pad but I hate that bellows bag. It's too big but the pad takes forever to inflate without it. Thanks for the video man I really appreciate it.

why wouldn't you use a pad and quilt?
@lakeeffected
@lakeeffected 5 ай бұрын
One can use both together. I saw somewhere that Warbonnet recommends that if you have a quilt, that the pad be inside the hammock. I’m not sure why.

@@lakeeffected I run a pad and a lynx torso length quilt. The Shorter quilt handles the cold spots, perfectly and the shorter length means the quilt is lighter and packs down smaller.
