CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The ploy of American immigration during the Civil War is augmented in this single take showcasing the disturbing circle of an Irish immigrant seeking a better life in America.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The violent rise of gangland power in New York City at a time of massive political corruption and the city's evolution into a cultural melting pot set the stage for this lavish historical epic, which director Martin Scorsese finally brought to the screen almost 30 years after he first began to plan the project. In 1846, as waves of Irish immigrants poured into the New York neighborhood of Five Points, a number of citizens of British and Dutch heritage who were born in the United States began making an open display of their resentment toward the new arrivals. William Cutting (Daniel Day-Lewis), better known as "Bill the Butcher" for his deadly skill with a knife, bands his fellow "Native Americans" into a gang to take on the Irish immigrants; the immigrants in turn form a gang of their own, "The Dead Rabbits," organized by Priest Vallon (Liam Neeson). After an especially bloody clash between the Natives and the Rabbits leaves Vallon dead, his son goes missing; the boy ends up in a brutal reform school before returning to the Five Points in 1862 as Amsterdam (Leonardo DiCaprio). Now a strapping adult who has learned how to fight, Amsterdam has come to seek vengeance against Bill the Butcher, whose underworld control of the Five Points through violence and intimidation dovetails with the open corruption of New York politician "Boss" Tweed (Jim Broadbent). Amsterdam gradually penetrates Bill the Butcher's inner circle, and he soon becomes his trusted assistant. Amsterdam also finds himself falling for Jenny Everdeane (Cameron Diaz), a beautiful but street-smart thief who was once involved with Bill. Amsterdam is learning a great deal from Bill, but before he can turn the tables on the man who killed his father, Amsterdam's true identity is exposed, even though he has concealed it from nearly everyone, including Jenny. Gangs Of New York was the first film in two years from actor Leonardo DiCaprio; ironically, it was at one time scheduled to open on the same day as Catch Me If You Can, the Steven Spielberg project that DiCaprio began filming immediately after Gangs wrapped.

This scene is so beautifully directed. Every bit of dialogue and visual just hammers in the point harder that these young folk whose lives have barely begun are being sent off to potentially die for a country they don't even understand. "Where's that?" is such a powerful line for that reason. It's just crushing. It's like if you were telling a kid his mom has cancer and he asks you what cancer is. I tear up every time the coffin is loaded off. It's like they were dead the moment they stepped on the ship.

The unfortunate next time she’d see him was probably in a pine box, and that even if he was able to identified and not just tossed in a mass grave or left in a make-shift grave on the very ground he died. Such was the horrible fate for lower class families who couldn’t afford to have their husbands, sons, fathers, etc bodies embalmed and shipped home and an era before dog tags and id cards. Soldiers would sow their names into their uniforms or keep papers in a safe place so should they fall, burial and retrieval details could maybe figure out who they were and send their corpses home.

Scorsese points it out very well (among so many other historical events) : the Irish were the gunflesh of the Northern army. Particularly at the Fredericksburg battle, in December 1862, under the command of General Burnside : 12 000 of them were shot dead during the front assault launched by this bloody butcher. Actually, the Southerners happened to be so impressed by their courage that they clapped them between two shoots, and gave them a warm ovation after the battle. They did their best to rescue as many wounded Irish soldiers as they could, saying : "where were their officers, to these poor guys ?"...

@The Number1 They say that Ireland was the testbed for British colonialism. They were repeatedly crushed and killed in their millions through British force or British manipulation. Saying Ireland was on Britain's side is like saying that India was on their side. Ireland was held under the heel of Britain's boot to some degree for 800 years. That doesn't mean they ever stopped resisting.

Compare that to the 600K dead out of the 2 million Union soliders, and that looks pretty good.

Very emotional scene on so many levels. When Linda Thompson stops singing “Well I wish were at home in dear old Dublin” the concertina starts playing that reel. “The Ships Are Sailing”. No, no no. You're thinking about Protestant Irish who fought in the Revolution, largely a minority. This movie takes place eighty years later, when Catholic Irish were coming in, and they were hated and despised by Protestant Americans - shops refused to hire them and posted signs saying "No Irish Need Apply" and there were frequent riots against them.
@nocucksinkekistan7321
@nocucksinkekistan7321 8 жыл бұрын
William Craig "No Irish Need Apply" was when hiring maids to take care of rich people, they wanted people of their own. Irish Catholics coming to America after the famine were given free land from the government and free stuff as a reward for choosing America over Britain. They were hated because a lot of families became poor having to pay for the Irish's welfare (at the time it was called Homestead).

@Straight White British Protestant Revisionist history. You do know the people of Ulster and the so called ''Ulster-Scots'' all mixed right before things got really ugly? by the time the Ulster-Scots/Scots-Irish emigrated they were so long in Ireland they were just Irish and thought of themselves as so, it's only when the issue of Catholicism became a pressing issue in the states that many of them tried to distance themselves from the Catholics coming over. There was also plenty of catholic Irishmen and women in the colonies since it's founding, they were not viewed as outsiders. The average Irishman did fine in America, revisionist wasp and revisionist Irish self victimization rhetoric are the thanking for these utter misconceptions about Irish Catholics and Protestants.

As usual with Hollywood, there's a bit of distortion in the history here, as Scorsese conveniently conflates the 1840s with the 1860s. Bill the Butcher rose to fame in the 1840s, when Irish immigration was at its peak, and had already died in 1855. By 1861, the flow of Irish immigrants into the United States had dwindled and the largest number of new immigrants were Germans, not Irishmen, and thousands of them volunteered for service in the Union army soon after entering the country. American Irishmen are justly credited with playing a major heroic role in the fighting forces of both sides in the Civil War, and were especially numerous on the Union side. But, the vast majority had already been in the US before the war and readily volunteered for military service upon the war's outbreak.
