Padua in northern Italy is one of those great old cities with a beautifully preserved historic center. The pedestrian zone has got arcades and shops, bars and cafés, cobblestone and broad piazzas, and lots of people out having a good time. We say "Padua," Italians say "Padova." In this episode we are going to focus more on people and the street life rather than historic sites like churches or museums. We will be showing you some great old buildings and suggesting a nice walking route that will get you right around through the historic center of Padua and will take you into the university district. Padua makes a very convenient day trip from nearby Venice, which is just 24 miles away - it's about a half hour train ride. We visit the main piazzas and Via Roma, a wonderful walking street. It really is the main pedestrian lane of Padua, and while it's not a piazza it functions as one because there are no cars allowed, so it's long and narrow as a street but filled with people.
The town has a wonderful historic center with pedestrian lanes and the loggia, with all of these arcades and columns. It's very pedestrian-friendly and bicycle-friendly. People are pedaling all over the place here, and there's lots of cafés, naturally, sidewalk cafés, people eating and drinking in the evening especially the young people, who come out about 6 o'clock to 7 o'clock and have a spritz, or a beer, have a wine at the café.
he grand Palazzo della Ragione is surrounded by three primary piazzas - delle Erbe, dei Fruit and dei Signori. This is the heart of Padua.
We found some sort of a street party going on. Turns out they are celebrating graduation day at the Padua medical school. It's the oldest medical school in the world, first founded with the University in the year 1222. And this being Italy they know how to celebrate in the streets. Amazing to think this ritual has been going on annually for about 800 years. And Padua still has one of the best medical schools in the world. The University has been associated with a large number of important intellectuals such as Copernicus, Galileo, Stendhal and William Harvey, who developed his system of blood circulation here. The university medical school has the oldest anatomy lab in the world and the university also hosts the oldest botanical garden in the world, which was used as a garden of curative herbs attached to the medical school. When done with your visit to Padua you can catch the tram right back to the train station.

I'm from Padua and I must say, well-done! But...you totally miss the southern part of old town, with Prato della Valle and surroundings! And it's literally a big missing: Prato della Valle is a monumental square, built in late XVIIIth century, which is the second-largest city square in all Europe. And nearby you may find the Botanic Gardens, which as you correctly cited are the oldest ones in the World, and impressive Santa Giustina abbey (basilica): one of the largest churches in the World.

E quella sei riuscito a raccontarla bene. Grazie

Spent a lot of time at Aviano and Vicenza, so weekend trips to Venice and Milan were always enjoyed, but Padova - Padua was also a great closer excursion. Cheaper, easier to get around and not so crowded, Many classes of hotels - b&b to 4 stars - and some great restaurants.

It's amazing to look at all that human scale density and street design. Beautiful historic buildings, warm inviting streets and pedestrian plazas, and streets that are not clogged up with cars. What more could you ask for? It's fascinating looking at Italian cities from an urban design perspective.

Beautiful city! Rich history! Great hospitality culture! Amazing architecture - feast for the eyes! Bur what happened to the bus terminal/station???? That was a shock for me... I took a bus from Vienna to Padova and there was no bus terminal as we all know it... I arrived to Padova at 4 a.m. and had nowhere to go or even have a cup of coffee (there wasn't even one machine available). There was a huge parking lot for cars and buses - empty! No person, no office, no place for sitting and waiting....Thank God for the GPS devices! I got to the Basilica (my point of travel - personal pilgrimage) and waited there for the Basilica to open. It was even scarier to go back at night from Padova to Vienna because I was the only person waiting for the bus at close to midnight time ....very scary.... no room for waiting, no person to ask any question.... what happened??? This was an "international bus terminal"????!!!! Can anyone explain to me what I missed??

Great city. We had the good fortune to visit Padova in 2011. The one place you didn't mention or show in the video is the memorial to 9/11. It is in a pleasant park by a river and in my opinion, beautifully done.

Thanks for that information. Next time I am in Padua I will look for it. Is your last name really Padova? That explains why you remember it so fondly. This is another of Italy's many wonderful places.
@GG1man
@GG1man 8 жыл бұрын
denniscallan Yes, our name originated in DiPadova. An orphan was raised and given the name. When he reached 18 years of age he left the orphanage and came to the United States. Some time after his arrival, the family he started dropped the Di. The city hall hasProvincia DiPadova on it's facade. While we were in Italy many of the locals did a double take when they learned our last name. My wife is Donna Padova. They kidded with her that her name Donna, means lady in Italian, so they called here Lady of Padova.

Excellent commentary, that is good description of the city. But the camera should look above the first story of the buildings sometimes. Also they could give 2 or 3 minutes to the part of the city outside the center-- none of the videos of cities by anyone do this.

@@denniscallan Prego. I've noticed American tourists seldom raise their eyes above the first floors when strolling thru beautiful European cities. Maybe that's because there is little architectural beauty & human interest in the US, at street level or above. The balconies and the ornate facades/roof lines outlined against the sky, are breathtaking, yet they never see any of it. Many KZfaq walkabout video photographers emulate this limited American view. Another common mistake is to not pan the camera to the right &/or left to show down the cross streets as you walk past them. Streets of various enchantments, which could be included in the video without lengthening it, are passed by with oblivion, like a horse does wearing blinders. Thank you for your "grazie." Good advice is often resisted, and seldom followed. By your reply there is hope that you will truly think about this advice, try it, and may follow it. Very few people would. Buona fortuna!

Thanks again James, I agree wholeheartedly, and when you watch my other 1,300 movies you'll notice I do point up sometimes (maybe not enough), and side streets are my speciality, while walking I always look both ways. There lies the true heart of town, away from the mobs. @@jameshannum7270

@@denniscallan What about devoting just a couple of minutes to the vast part of the cities outside the centers? Yes its nice to see the Left Bank and the Right Bank of Paris, yes that does show something of the city away from the touristy very center, but what about the huge area of Paris which is some miles away (5 or 6 metro stops out from the center)?
