From the Romans to the Celts to the Vikings, pagan gods existed in all of our ancestors' rich theologies. They inspired mystery cults, agricultural rituals and sacrifices, all which historians are only beginning to scratch the surface of. In the final episode of Gods & Monsters, Tony Robinson confronts Viking berserkers, recreates the flaming horror of the Wicker Man, re-enacts a brutal ritual human sacrifice, and witnesses self-mutilation - all in his quest to understand how our ancestors worshipped.

This documentary feels more like an attempted at the stereotypical Hollywood production of Pagan stereotypes rather than an actual analysis of Pagan Gods and cultures. I feel disappointed for those who spent time producing this; your work has plenty of room for improvement. Please take that opportunity for future productions.

@CR Productions It's less of what they got wrong and more of what they didn't cover. I wish they would have spent more time on grounded topics rather than the theatrical ones. Paganism has an amazingly rich and divers history! Many misunderstandings come from lack of written material, leading to a bit of a biased view. As an example, animal sacrifice was a thing, but it was less 'killing for the Gods' and more 'Well shit, we need food.. let's slaughter one of the livestock, and hey, we'll do a ritual while we're at it to show appreciation for the Gods.' I'm not the best person to provide specific information (I am eclectic myself,) but I can recommend reaching out to reconstructionist groups. Most tend to be unbiased and view the old religions as a practical belief rather than a Hollywood nut galley.

@Rocket Paganism is an umbrella term for multiple paths that are nature based, or more modernly, not part of the Abrahamic faiths. Most are also polytheistic. Different cultures believed in different Gods and traditions. Many did not preform killing sacrifices at all, but rather "sacrificed" their time and energy into the crops for a great harvest by obeying the turning of the year. Some did preform human sacrifices as shown in the folk horror movie The Wicker Man, but they were extremely rare. It was more common for animal sacrifices to occur, but it was a ritual for the animals' soul before they cooked and ate it. Modern Pagans still celebrate and sacrifice their time towards nature, but none that I known of ever sacrifice a living being. Instead they may make a small offering of wine or food. Unjust harm to another living soul is usually seen as invoking the Gods' ire.

Almost all ancient beliefs share the same concept of pagan Gods. 1. Ancient Egyptians' God was a manifest of 3 divinities - Amun, Re & Ptah. 2. Babylonians worshipped the trinity of Nanna, Shamash & Ishtar. 3. The concept of trimurti forms Hindu supreme God, Brahman which is a manifest of Brahma, Vishnu & Shiva. 4. Ancient Greeks had a triple-headed Goddess Hikate, also described as Goddess of Triple Way. 5. Diana the Diva Triformis (3-formed Goddess) was the Romans' Goddess. 6. Northwestern European tribes worshipped 3 female deities known as Donas Matrone (Matrons) 7. The Persians had Ahura Mazda, Mithra & Anahita

Are we going to add today's trinity?
@keekl6870
@keekl6870 2 жыл бұрын
@@supersoulcollecter There's no direct reference in the Bible on a triune God. The concept of God in Christianity, though differs in its finer details compared to ancient pagan beliefs, its basic concept of three related divinities is quite similar. It echoes the significance of no. 3 in ancient Greek. Aristotle writes, "Just as the Pythagoreans say, the whole and all things are delimited by the three; for end, middle and the beginning have the number of the whole which is that of the triad. Wherefore we use this number also in the worship of the gods, taking it from nature as a law of it" (De Cailo, Book 1). Greco-Roman religions were also rife with tales of gods procreating with human women & begetting god-men. The god of Greek Pantheon, Zeus, through human woman, Danae begotten god-man son Hercules, the saviour. Julius Caesar, described in Ephesus Inscription as, "Descendant of Ares and Aphrodite, the God who has become manifest and universal saviour of human life". On the birth of Augustus, another Roman dictator, Priene Calendar Inscription says, "The birthday of the god has been for the whole world the beginning of good news concerning him". It mirrors he Gospel of Mark 1:1 re. the Son of God that reads, "The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God". I'm not accusing the writer of the Gospel of copying Priene Calendar Inscription but..... So the concept of human being who is a "divine son of god, the saviour of mankind & good news" was a kind of template that was applied to people of authority & great power. In the Bible, Jesus sometimes appears explicitly to deny that he is divine such as “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone (Mark 10:18), and “The son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing” (John 5:19). Jesus, on the other hand, is frequently depicted as having nondivine qualities, including temptation, fear, indecision, and lack of knowledge. In Gethsemane he is intensely afraid so that God sends an angel to strengthen and reassure him (Luke 22:39-49). Jesus does not know the date of the second coming (Mark 13:32). Such qualities conflict with what is logically known of God. Here he's clearly presented by the Gospel writers him as a human being. Nondivine.

I also thought the Wickerman might have been used as an intimidation technique against the Romans. I doubt they made those human sacrifices as often as we might imagine. The bogs may have had people put within them for thousands of years. I know carbon dating is used, but there is a margin of error on dating. So perhaps it wasn't as much as we would think. Unfortunately, there is no way to know what they considered for sacrifice and how often. I would think burning in the Wickerman would be far more hideous if kept alive while burning.

Warning for anyone misled into thinking this is actually a documentary about historic religions in Britain, as is claimed at the beginning: There is no mention of the Anglo-Saxon peoples or their pre-Christian Germanic religion. According to this documentary, Britain is an island of Celts that were converted to Christianity, and there was a period of "Viking" gods in there. The Anglo-Saxons, apparently, never came to Britain and do not exist. If you're looking for a documentary about the religious history of the English people, this isn't it.

I think they prepared for that. I also thought perhaps they may have burned the statue in such a way that produced a lot of smoke and the victims of the sacrifice died from smoke inhalation instead of actual burning. I am not sure if there is such a way to do that because I have no experience in anything like that. I just thought perhaps they may have had a way to make it less painful.

This was wonderful1 I would truly enjoy seeing more historical narratives. There is definitely so much paganism in the Roman Catholic religion, as I witness growing up. Now, I can understand the "roman" derivation of the religion, so thanks for that. I always wondered why Christians of all types do not also incorporate Judaism in their religion/ identity. After all, JC was Jewish. Any clues from the producers of this documentary would be appreciated.

Incorporating Judaism into Christianity would require rejecting Jesus as any form of god. (He also fails as a messiah, not that a messiah can be a god.) Catholicism has a very pagan flavor, but its theology is as pure a form of monotheism as any trinitarian form of Christianity.

bits and pices of ancient pagan fertility rites and rituals and beliefs survive (weather we want to admit it or not) in many of our Christian churches and Church Theology Ess. the Roman catholic church, this does not mean the church is pagan but that it adapted Customes and traditions of pagans of the respective areas. May day rituals, chiming of bells , incense, the trinity even veneration of the Virgin Mary and other saints , Corn Dollys , Religious Processions Harvest AKA Thanksgiving dinners, Hell even consuming the Literal body and blood of our god is compatible with pre existing religious beliefs that existed in Rome, Egypt and the middle east . So its no wonder it was easy for many Pagans to convert to Christianity.

*BIAS INFORMATION ALERT* This definitely is not what defines Paganism. There are countless different types of practices with different agendas within the pagan culture, most of which have nothing to do with sacrifications, or other wise known to some as Black Magick or High Magick. In fact as little as only about 3% of the pagan community dabble within this Black Magick context. While the rest of the community works along side the light, doing good deeds, gaining love, compassion, and a connectivness with nature and the Divine (what most call God). Another side note on the practice of pagan demonology, a lot of pagans who do practice demonology, do so from a standpoint of banishing the demons. Usually in attempt to protect people of harm from these demons. - As I actually know someone who identifies with this practice. Yet, mainstream religions who have, over the years, fallen victim to arrogance choosing to ignore this information. Instead, focusing strictly on that small 3% of the community. It's rather hilariously pathetic.

If you think about it, the spectacle of this is a human sacrifice the modern god of Mammon. :^) Also you could say that LGBT+ people, Witches, Natives, etc were "human sacrifices" to the Christian god who demanded their murders for his appeasement.

And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, (calling), "Worship God and avoid taghut (shun false acts of worship and devotion to false deities)." And among them were those whom God guided, and among them were those upon whom error was (deservedly) decreed. So proceed (i.e., travel) through the earth and observe how was the end of the deniers. Holy Quran (16:36) Oh People of the Book! Commit no excesses in your religion, nor say of God anything but the truth. Christ Jesus, the son of Mary, was (no more than) a messenger of God, and His Word which He bestowed on Mary, and a spirit proceeding from Him. So believe in God and His messengers. Say not, 'Trinity.' Desist! It will be better for you, for God is One God, Glory be to Him! (Far exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belong all things in the heavens and on earth. And enough is God as a Disposer of affairs. Holy Quran (4:171)

The Bible if studied in detail does not deny the existence of gods. Only that YHWH is the most high, the others are sons of God- small gods. They rebelled- most Christians call them angels incorrectly. See Psalm 82, that Jesus (Yeshua) quoted to Pharisees. Psalm 82 A psalm of Asaph. 1 God presides in the great assembly; he renders judgment among the “gods” 2 “How long will you defend the unjust and show partiality to the wicked? 3 Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed. 4 Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked. 5 “The ‘gods’ know nothing, they understand nothing. They walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken. 6 “I said, ‘You are “gods” you are all sons of the Most High.’ 7 But you will die like mere mortals; you will fall like every other ruler.”Rise up, O God, judge the earth, for all the nations are your inheritance.”

Is it Pagin/Heathen to make such sacrifice... God asked for a son... Then took the goat... Even the Christian God loves the smell of burning flesh fat and blood.... And was disgusted by the offering from Cain of the best fruit and vegetables.... Hence pushed Cain to give God Ables blood along with the burning flesh....

Hey, I belong to a polytheistic religion (hinduism) and recently I have been noticing similarities between paganism and hinduism like worshipping gods which are connected to nature, worshipping trees and rivers and also the sacrifices ( in hinduism we have this another aspect of Tantra sadhna where sacrifices are made). This got me intrigued and I stumbled upon this video. But after watching it for 10 minutes I understood how they are trying to demonize pagans, in the exact same way they have demonized hinduism, their tactics are very similar to show that how backward, uncivilized and cruel these religions are AND imposing abrahmic faiths on such beautiful, native and spiritual cultures which are a lot more ancient than these so called abrahmic faiths. Please tell me an unbiased source from where I can learn more about paganism and dwelve into the similarities( youtube is not helping much, a lot of videos are biased). I am really curious about it. Love from India

Polytheism is a totally different worldview from monotheism, as a product of an entirely different age with its archaic society, tech, knowledge etc than those that succeeded it. If we can't imagine the lives of those who lived before electricity then try imagining the "children of the forest" or animists & pagans.

You are correct the first sentence but the other parts is incorrect theologically speaking it's the same belief in general it's a God believe what the god belief the God believe in specifics it's quite different because it's different God than the hebraic one and its many gods to so it's multiple almighty's abilities doing it not just one Divinity doing it alone but many Divinities doing it together today's world mainly are principally in the Western hemisphere is not used to polytheism because of its brainwash indoctrination of hebraism do Pagan polytheism multiple God belief in fact, and make more sense theologically and spiritually and actually far more powerful
