A Sikh-American responds to a hate crime.
PAGG is used with permission from Nardeep Khurmi. Learn more at nardeepkhurmi.com.
Mandeep is a young professional, a husband, a father to a young infant son. He's a Brooklynite, a neighbor, a part of a local community. He's also a Sikh-American, one who feels a certain wariness descend upon and around him as news of a terrible hate crime clouds the upcoming Fourth of July celebrations.
As tensions rise, he faces pointed stares and looks -- some at his "pagg," or turban -- on the subway. His work even pulls him from an important presentation. But when he faces a direct, ugly, emotionally brutal encounter on the street, he makes a decision that proves ultimately both tragic and futile.
Writer-director Nardeep Khurmi -- who also plays the lead role of Mandeep -- has crafted a short drama that explores what it means to be an ethnic American in a politically and racially charged climate.
Through compelling, well-constructed writing and focused, intelligent performances, it uses film's ability to allow others to step into another's footsteps and understand what it's like to have one's existence constantly questioned and guarded against in the course of everyday life.
The script builds Mandeep's experience gradually, first as an internal horror and anxiety when he first hears of the hate crime on the media. Then, through adroit editing and direction, the camera captures the growing web of subtle yet cutting interactions he faces, whether it's in the way his fellow subway riders stare at his backpack or turban or the way they freeze when he enters a space. Though these actions are small, they have a deep impact on Mandeep.
The storytelling then slowly escalates the tension by taking those race-clouded judgments and assumptions and making them more intimate and personal upon Mandeep, especially when they begin to come from people he knows.
No one is consciously discriminating against the man they know, and they seem to be acting out of obliviousness or practicality -- but in his performance, Khurmi captures the sense of a man being slowly weighed down by a world who sees him first and foremost as his turban, and allows that to be the leading factor in how to see and treat him. When it finally builds up to an explosive, potentially violent encounter, Mandeep makes a difficult, heartbreaking decision.
PAGG is well-crafted, smart and focused storytelling, delivering its narrative with clarity. Its aims for understanding and compassion are clear, especially with its emphasis on Mandeep's internal experience. Through this unwavering focus on the internal, the film captures the way subtle racism can erode away one's sense of freedom and self-determination in the world, seeping into our very being. The only way Mandeep can regain those very American virtues is to essentially make himself invisible -- but even the terrible price of self-negation isn't enough. No matter how he accommodates himself, the narrow, insular microscope he's under is always there, watching him with the mistrust, fear and anger that often come with unchecked assumptions.

Everyone has the right to practice their religion the way they see fit. Some people read things differently than others but that doesn’t make them anything less within that religion if this makes sense. Like people who follow the Bible can take it many different ways. Living by three simple virtues of Kirt: Work, Naam Jap: Meditate on lords one name, Vand Shak: Share your earnings with needy can help us live fuller and simpler lives. In the age of complication and outwardly projection the guru teaches us to live a life which is more spiritually and inwardly centric. For more resource check out Basics of sikhi page on KZfaq

My ancestors were merchants from Arabia, and my grandfather’s used to tell me that when his father’s ship would dock in India during trade, they would leave their stuff with a Sikh, as they were very honest, and he would continue his trip back to Arabia or Zanzibar, and then come back to India and find his merchandise safe and sound with the Sikh. He also told me in June 1999 before he passed away at the age of 89, that you will never find a Sikh begging in the streets of India, you will find Hindus because of the Caste system, and you will find Muslims as well, but never a Sikh. I went to India in 2017 to attend a friend’s wedding, whose an Indian immigrant in my country the UAE, and I noticed that the Sikh neighborhoods were clean, safe, and people mined their own business, and not one single beggar.

Blame your Zionist-adhering leaders and lobbyists who opt for endless wars against Israel's enemies. Zionists were behind Libya, Iraq, Syria, and Iran. This 'harmless country that just wants their ethnic state' has the strongest intelligence agencies, and its 'Defense Force' silently fires missiles into Syria without provocation. That's not discussed by the mainstream media, but it happens weekly. Ironic right? Also, this 'hostility' isn't limited towards only Muslims, many racial minorities are mistrusted in the west. For instance, mexicans and blacks are constantly targeted in America, did they also collectively earn their reputation? Westerners dislike Muslims for their beliefs and 'terrorism', but nary a word is spoken about NATO's atrocities and transgressions. As for western civilization and values, you don't have the high ground to judge others. I don't think your justification for racism and hate is fair, nor is 'give it time' a solution.

Exactly how is this a beautiful story? How is this 'kind of' terrible? This man loses his pitch in his job, can't even ride the bus without being stared down like he's less than, he get's bullied and humiliated in front of his wife and child, and in the end he has to give up his identity so he can be safe, fit in, be somewhat accepted. There's nothing beautiful about any of this, and it isn't kind of terrible, IT IS TERRIBLE! Put yourselves in his shoes and for a minute just imagine how his life is on a daily. The tragic thing is, he'll still be bullied because of the color of his skin and his features.

For the purpose for THIS video, those symbols don’t work. And again in THIS video, this character is “supposed” to be wearing a turban and I was just pointing out the fact that his turban is very poorly done.

gotta say I agree man, they're in New York so there's definitely going to be professional turban tying services. I thoroughly enjoyed the film but I couldn't help but be distracted from poorly tied Turbans or them being tied backwards.

Maybe they don’t mind having hindu symbols, maybe they respect all people and culture. And his turban was alright, there wasn’t anything improper in the way it was done.

The lady didn’t sit next to him and looked at him with distrust but this way he knows he couldn’t get attacked by a lunatic with gun. He did this for his family so his kid and his wife wouldn’t have to live without him.
