My name's Paige and I am in my third year studying Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge. I am a member of Jesus College and make regular vlogs of my day to day life at uni, including lectures, supervisions, and social activities.

Good luck,with whatever you choose to do after uni. Becoming an actuary is quite demanding; a series of very difficult courses must be taken and a three year work experience period must be completed in order to become qualified.

I've been to talks in the lecture room of your astrophysics department, at a SPA convention (Society for Popular Astronomy). I'd love to see you end up as an astrophysicist because there's so much to it, I don't think you could ever be bored. I also think you'd be great doing outreach as you're very natural in front of the camera. I know someone a little older than you who's just finishing her astrophysics PhD (something to do with dust!) at Cardiff. If you have time, have a listen to a podcast called Awesome Astronomy, which she co-presents. The other two are men, so you'll know who she is.

My advice do not do Actuary. Everyone I know left that field. My advice if you like finance and investments etc is take a masters. Then apply for investment banking (you can stay just 2-3 years) and move into investment management or private equity. Much more interesting as you interact with clients, investors and research investments. So provides good income and intellectual stimulation. ACA accounting is also dull and not needed as the old stepping stone into investment industry as with the huge options of Masters, CFA, CAIA etc all help bridge the gap with correct work experience.

I would think that Actuarial Science would be a very different core curriculum than Astrophysics. Maybe not. Doesn't AS require extensive coursework in statistics? And the usual degree obtained for being an Actuary is Economics or Commerce. Interesting. Clearly, you would not be considering such a career path if it was impossible with an AS degree, so you undoubtedly know what you are doing.

Well, I only mentioned Commerce and Economics because this got me so curious I looked it up and the site I was on mentioned the usual path involved several possible majors, the two they mentioned were Economics and Commerce. I guess I got the wrong info because I just checked again and no site I could find mentioned commerce. The most frequent majors mentioned on several sites were economics, finance, math and statistics. Physics was also mentioned as being perfectly acceptable. The main thing seemed to be that you be able to pass the actuarial exams, whatever major you choose. In fact, technically speaking, if you can pass the exams, you don't even need a 4 yr degree; the point being made though was that in reality no one would hire you without a degree of some kind.
