Heyyyyy is that a HYBRID?
Yup, sure is! And it's a paperweight at the moment...
Owner has been trying to get it running for OVER A YEAR since swapping the knocking engine out.
PARTS CANNON HAS BEEN UNLEASHED.
Let's start from scratch and see why this Prius isn't emitting any greenhouse gases at all xD
First code is P0A84 - Hybrid Battery Cooling Fan Circuit...
Should be fun!

I owned one of those second-gen Priuses. Bought it at 145k miles, needed a battery soon after so I bought the $1000 kit and did it. Drove it 40k miles in a year. Really a remarkable vehicle, and easy to work on. Just a few extra caveats like being mindful of the high voltage, dielectric oil in the A/C, brake maintenance b/c the brakes are also hybridized.

I have a neighbor I've been helping with a 2008 Prius, that has issues. 1st thing i said to him after going over and seeing it was,YOU NEED TO GET THE MANUAL or go online PAY WHATEVER it COST and get schematics for this thing. They make it perfectly clear if you fool with the wiring YOU MIGHT DIE!!!haha I can't wait to show him your vid,as you are the BEST at SHOWING and EXPLAINING thoughtful SOLUTIONS to the issues.Like you say and DO,many times PARTS are NOT required.like this fan thing,BOOM !!!that was the parts cannon going off.haha Another fan put in that WASN'T NEEDED.Your lessons are invaluable, thanks IVAN.

AS you know the battery module consists of several dozens of single cells. Any one of those individual cells can (and do) become unbalanced. If the discharge is deep enough the cell(s) can go into reverse polarity. When that phenomenon occurs there is no way a system charge can provide or preform a so-called restore/recondition/et all. The only proven method to correct a deeply discharged cell is a charging process where each cell is treated individually with a special ac-dc waveform. This is exactly like any lead-acid battery where if the battery discharged so deeply as to allow a cell or cells to go reversed it will never again perform to spec (even though it will pass a voltage test, the capacity is severely compromised). Not saying this is the problem here, but something to be mindful of as you become more involved with these sort of vehicles.

Alot of people dont know this but you can tow charge a very low hybrid toyota as long as the battery contactor closes and its in drive even if the engine is unable to start due to low battery. They warn people in the owners manual you can over charge a normally functional car if left in drive being towed behind a motorhome. The car has a pma brushless motor it makes 220v at 6 amps at 2k rpm.

A gem of a diagnostic, the prius vs the master tec. Bet you find a few bad cells in that so called new battery. Mine not only had a failed engine (piston rings broken/seized with carbon build up from valve seals failing) but cells needing regeneration with a Tynergy t180, that takes 24 hrs per cell see you in 6 weeks for part 2.

chris dunkley Right. I dunno if I'd agree that ALL Toyotas are prone to this problem thiugh. Ivan has worked on one (a Metz?) with nearly half a million k's on the clock, so I don't think THAT one has a problem in this area! Interesting re - the battery charger. The tynergy is obviously a balanced charger, connecting & monitoring each cell individually. I assume it can't monitor all 100 cells simultaneously, but only 10 or 20 at a time maybe? Is that why it takes so long to get the battery sorted?

It had a wall charger and this somewhat dodgy setup with an inverter to run power tools off the hybrid battery. Saved us having to hump a generator or 30M of extension leads a lot of the time. You would be surprised just how much you can get in one of these. Its just a shame about a particular kind of sanctimonious people who happen to drive some of them.

I think batteries begin charging at high current & low voltage. As the battery gains charge, the current will decrease and the voltage will increase. So.... from what I saw, that black charger isn't doing what it should (unless it was in "battery analysis mode" when the video ended.).

The challenge is trying to understand all the logic induced in a hybrid electrical system. To some extent the codes raised when something goes wrong are just based on the fact that a lot of people working with vehicles don't have a full grasp of the whole system. One team is working on the battery charger, one is working on the drive system and a third is working with the rest of the vehicle. The third team is still in the combustion engine era.

When it comes to the Gen2 Prius (2004-2010 maybe?) you can always count on corroded wiring terminals INSIDE the car when you find weird scan tool readings! This was common in the Gen1 Prius too but the second generation Prius was NOTORIOUS for leaking rainwater into the rear of the car, then when you add in stray electrolyte vapors from leaky NiMh cells mixing and condensing all over things you get very "interesting" fault codes that are hard to pin down. But I knew you would come to that conclusion eventually too. It was fun watching you sort the issues out. Brings back old memories for me! Thanks.

Another odd idea with these eletric vehicles. It's supposed to be able to be charged from house current so it'll go up to 15 mph on the battery then the gas engine takes over and apparently charges the battery a small amount until house current is hooked up again. Well, here this battery is low and it is disabling the engine which is opposite what it should be doing I presume. It doesn't make sense that the electric motor battery has to have a charge to start and run the gas engine. Regardless of the electric motor battery state of charge of low or very low, shouldn't the gas engine start and function? As it is now, the electronics think the battery has voltage and is forcing the vehicle to use the electric motor which can't start because the volts are too low. Obviously the green crusties are throwing a wrench into the operation process so there's got to be more of them along the way in the wiring I'd say. Once that car is fixed, I'd through in a can of Deoxit in the glove box !

I think we would come away with the satisfaction that we helped the environment, saved tons of gas, and got excellent traction in the snow. Clearly, if this guy has owned 20 of these cars and is able to make a hobby of repairing/selling these then obviously they are VERY reliable. Kilmer says these cars have something called an Adkinson Cycle powertrain. I have no idea what that means. The biggest problem with these cars is I would need to bring it to Pennsylvania Furnace to get it repaired. Great video!

Reality check, I owned one (of this second generation) and it had very poor snow performance on all-season tires because the traction control is so aggressive, as I understood it to protect the electric half from over-revving or something like that. I was once on a hill and the car refused to move up it because there wasn't enough traction. Had to turn around and go back down.

I've seen that wire broken on every Prius that comes in with that fan voltage code. It doesn't seem to be water intrusion, I think the connector is inadequate for the amount of current it carries over a long period of time and it just fails. Maybe the hybrid battery is low from cranking an engine that won't start. I've heard that if you erase low battery voltage code you can get a few cranks out of the battery before the code resets and disables the start function, unless it's really low. Never tried it. Hybrids are still a learning experience.

Wire corrodes because it's B+ ALL THE TIME and is not insulated at all from moisture 😅

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Hi Ivan I dunno if having b+ on it all the time accelerates the green custies does it? I thought that just the chronic, persistent moisture on the brass terminals would do that? - Especially salty moisture. Anyway how does the moisture get into that connector in the first place? It may be a common problem from what some here have said. Almost a built-in problem from the factory. Hopefully there's an easy 'walkaround' so that this problem never happens again

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Oh right! I have come across the green crusties a few times, but obviously not as many as yourself. I have successfully used salt & vinegar to remove them from corroded brass terminals, but they had only surface corrision, & had not completely rotted out! You have to be able to completely rinse it away afterwards of course. It doesn't look like the 'de-oxit' needs to be rinsed away then?

Oh boy, looks like this is going to be fun Ivan! Reminiscent of a college engineering senior project. "Your mission is to figure out this bundle of wires that were submerged in salt water and doctored up by a kooky tinkerer, clean it up, re-wire it back to what it's supposed to be, and get this "beached whale" running again."

I have one of these. They are known for water leaking from the rear hatch seal and it fills the 12V battery well with water, so everything is damp back there all the time. I'm going to replace my 12V battery ground cable today because of corrosion. Mine has 246,000 on it ATM.
