You're one of the best painting teachers on KZfaq, I can't even begin to express how much I've learned from you. You simplify everything and break things down in a straightforward way that really works. I've used your videos for general knowledge of painting. I normally work in acrylic and watercolor, but Im now starting oil painting. I can now go into it confidently with the information you've given me in your tutorials. Thank you for everything you do Chris!

Great video... It's important to acknowledge that you may "know" something, but you don't REALLY know something, until you're doing it. Doing is knowing. Isolation learning is key to this end.

Hearing the same thing over and over until it sinks in. Yes, that's very true, I noticed that when I was learning watercolors, specifically layering. Reminds me of grade 10 Algebra too lol...I remember saying "I don't understand" over and over...until CLICK, oh...I see... a+b DOES equal c...☺

As a digital artist, I've been going through your videos and really learning from the advice you give!! Here's a small tip for anyone who looks at reference on their phone, rather than a physical copy - if you want an easy way to set up a grid over your reference, some image editing apps have grids appear when you crop an image. It's just a 3x3 grid so nothing super fancy, but it's been helping me improve my initial sketches a bit. I lock the aspect ratio to 1:1, which is super easy to replicate without the risk of distortion.

2:01 Exactly, I attended various art schools from the age of 12 and until now, at the age of 27, I am still making progress in art, repeating the same sentences of professors in my head. Them work, but only when you understand them, and that takes time.

I recently started (SAFELY!!!) painting with lead white and I'm absolutely shocked by the difference this has made when mixing colours When doing a side by side comparison with my regular go-to titanium white. I immediately noticed that the lead white appeared a lot warmer than the stark titanium white that i was used to. But the real difference became apparent when I started to mix in different coulers. This is because (in my opinion) lead white has a much, much better pigment retention then my regular white. So if any painters out there have a chance to (SAFELY!!!) experience with lead white i would highly recommend it!!!

Do you have any tips for drawing with the paintbrush? I see that you draw it out and very broad stuff. But how do you get everything so precise even when your sketch is very rough and nothing is really there at all?

This is how I learned the violin so it makes sense with painting. We always want the whole to look and be beautiful but the fact is, everything is made of parts and if those parts are chaotic, the whole will be a mess. Thankfully, paintings don't create noise that make your cats plan your funeral.
