i really like the granular focus of this vid. hyper focusing one area to extrapolate that and apply it the entire model. it really wasn't about "stealing" at all, but learning

Pretty sure there's a quote that goes something along the lines of: ''Good artists borrow, great artists steal.'' Nobody should feel bad for being heavily inspired by someone else's work and studying their techniques.

I really appreciate how much practice/trial and error you show on your channel. I get discouraged when I don’t succeed right away so seeing someone as successful as you have to practice is really encouraging! Thanks Lyla!

I really appreciate how you break down even smaller areas to focus on. You get into details that other painters gloss over.

This video is great advice to get people off watching painting and instead trying something out. This is a thing i already do and your video here just made me look at minis a little different. Love your videos and this was a clever one.

I'm not into improving as fast as possible; I'm all about slow & steady improvement on my end. With that having been said, I can think of a multitude of painters I steal ideas and colors from to this end, to try and improve my painting. Thank you for excellent content, as always, because I always enjoy how clearly you explain things and break things down. (I've committed myself to tackling NMM in a serious manner this year, as it happens.)

Stealing a good colour scheme was one of the first things I did. Did I say steal? I meant “homage” lmao

Dang, I was just about ready to give up on ever trying NMM again, and here you go making it look so easy! Can't wait to try and use your tricks to 'steal' myself into another NMM attempt...
@archimedesd5794

I've done this for a long time, although I don't really outright steal. I tend to look at the effects and the techniques and try to loosely apply them to my own colours schemes. Whenever I'm a bit stuck looking at other models of the same type can really help break that creative block. When it comes to art, imitation truly is the finest form of flattery providing accreditation is still given.

Lyla, luv, let me say Art is either revolution or plagiarism, anything else is respect for what works. And imitation is the sincerest form of getting great results.

It's not really 'stealing', it's learning. Imitation is an important part of how we learn. It's only stealing if you claim that you did it originally. As long as you're honest about it, you're good... :)

I’m very glad the hobby is so far-reaching and there’s so many passionate and talented people on this platform, but of the many miniature painting/crafting channels, this one has always stood out for its quality and style. I know you’ll be able to make the full-time painting into reality - great video and best of luck Lyla!

Another way to help focus in on something is to flip it upside down so your brain has to really look for those shapes. Really easy to do when you're having trouble isolating details during the planning phase. Good vid!

Hola Lyla, Love your videos! this one on particular is something that resonates with my own experience as an artist, 10 years ago I read STEAL LIKE AN ARTIST a wonderful book that explores this very subject and it really opened my mind to a better approach to art just like this video did jet again, if you haven’t read it I think you’ll like it. Cheers from Mexico!!

Can't wait to give this method a try! I've always struggled with placing highlights and shadows as well as getting the gradation between them down. Another thing that has always vexed me was how far of a value jump to make between the shadow, mid, and highlights. Hopefully this method will help all that finally click in my head!

Your goal should not be to learn faster or get better quick, your goal should always be to understand better what you do! As an experienced teacher in miniature painting for two decades I can say: ney, ain't gonna work! Stealing is the wrong word here I'd say. You get inspired. Stealing the painters experience and long time trained skill is not going to work and shows. Really enjoy the editing and the pace. I will steal some ideas ;) - a good video! Keep on happy painting! - Roman

@nekrataali Жыл бұрын
Stealing is definitely the right word. Pablo Piccasso paraphrased TS Elliot when he said "Good artists copy; great artists steal." You won't create anything new that hasn't been done before because artists have been stealing things from one another going back to when the first caveman drew a picture of a deer on a wall using mud.

Yep it's imperastion not stealing/copying if you give credit and work n your own style... That said on devainart you'll find people mimicking another's style wholesale and becoming masters of it... But they never claim it as their style just there take on anotthers. As for me I take from everything so I can't credit just one source which for my miniature painting I'm taking from Picxel art style that is '80s-'00s pixel art low res limited 3D style defined by my limits as a pixel artest... So yeah you can reference things other then models and that's completely normal.
