This is a basic, bite size tutorial highlighting the techniques used by Monet when painting. This is only intended as a rough guide. Our practical art history workshops are much more indepth. It highlights the basic skills taught in our art appreciation workshops held at The Artery in Banbury. 1-21 tuition is also available. www.thearteryonline.co.uk

To you, the gentleman nice enough to show techniques and giving advice, some comments here are uncalled for, likely by people who have no creativity in them, and not interested at all. There are trolls everywhere and if I were you, I wouldn't allow people to comment. I know good people would pay for the ignorant ones, but you shouldn't be wasting your time on idiots. Keep up the great work. I'm a self taught artist, paint with watercolour, acrylic and oil, mastered all three and will never share what I do. One, because I have my own style and refuse to be copied, or sell my work. I have just under 900 (mostly detailed) paintings, and no one will get into my mind. I'm far from one hundred years old. Not even halfway. I'd rather leave everything as inheritance for my family. You are way too nice, sir. So for those of you who complain or post bad comments just to be mean, I'm glad you can't create. You don't deserve that gift. ~

I haven't seen very many rude comments or complaints. You will always get uncalled for comments but the key is not reading them or letting them hurt you. This comment section is for the most part extremely positive. For me, being able to comment on his videos is very helpful because I am a self taught and often have many questions.

My middle name is Monet, it’s the name I go by. My mom named me after Monet and I’m thankful she did because I adore his work. Probably the reason I’m so into art.

Smolly28, thank you for your comment. I am that 'ignorant moron' and as well as teaching art, I also teach art history and the science of colour mixing which I have done for 17 years. This is a basic guide to the style of Impressionism which is there to build confidence and inspire. This is not a biography of Monet or his many techniques. I have studied many books on Monet, quite a few of which are conflicting and open to suggestion, for example Monet himself has been quoted as saying that he only painted for half an hour outside, yet in another quote he says that he paints slowly. I look at historical artworks from an artists point of view and the human side of the artist behind the canvas, it's not all allegory and hidden meaning. I chose acrylics and not oils to make it more accessible to beginners, asthmatics and those working in small rooms. The tutorial is about painting *like* Monet and Impressionism itself is vast and varied and you only need to look at the differences between Sisley, Degas, Seurat, Basille and Cezanne to see this. All I try to do is to show people with a desire to paint that it is possible and there are simple methods out there to get people on the right track and build up enough confidence to learn more in-depth methods (which I also teach).

Ofcourse, anyone painting understands your effort,, thank you very much,, perhaps you can show us how optical color mixing is done,, you know, like when you use 3 colors or 2 in contrast with the background, to create 1 color a seen from afar,, :-) That would be super useful to impressionist beginners too :-) no? Anyway thanks and take care, Hélio EU Antwerp

Beautiful tutorial. I used to always aim to paint with more realism because I thought that somehow made the art "better" (whatever that means) but I've recently become very drawn to the style of impressionism for both its speediness and its dreamlike qualities. It seems to be more "honest" if that makes any sense at all. I think I'll give it a go soon.

There are many books that have been written on Monet and as much as I would have liked to add every single technique he used into this tutorial, it just isn't possible to do so in a bite-size time frame or to keep it accessible for artists who are total beginners or those wanting to improve. Monet did indeed spend many months on a lot of his paintings, but on others (usually the smaller ones), he painted outside and very quickly such as the painting of his wife and Mdme Boudin on the beach. Grains of sand were present on the clothing that had got stuck to the oils due to painting on the beach. Monet himself said that you shouldn't spend longer than half an hour painting outside as the light and shadows change. My tip for painting outside would be perhaps to mark the shadows first. I also draw a small arrow in the top corner showing the direction of sunlight, so if I take a longer time on the painting I will always know the direction of the shadows.

Thank you for your comments. This short demonstration is not meant to be an extensive biography on Monet and it serves to inspire and create confidence in painting in that style while learning a small amount along the way. Painting from reality is indeed important as I encourage all of my students to do this. There is also much documented evidence that Monet paint a lot outside even from a young age as encouraged by Eugene Boudin.

Thanks this kindof build up my confidence. In my art class, which is from regular school so no fency class just basic art with theory and practica, my teacher keeps making fun of how bad I am and that makes it really hard for me to paint. I even hate the idea of painting itself just because she destroyed my confidence that badly. I love drawing though, with pen and digitally. I wanted to start painting as well and then I was hit with the comments and critique that was absolutely only aimed at making me realize how bad I really was, no help at all. So I tried to see how other people paint since I couldn't find much help in the painting style of my neighbours and this video really helped me to try harder because I now have a little bit more of an idea how to do it. Thanks =) (The topic is drawing an impressionistic painting in watercolors of a picture by choice in black and white, which we are to repaint using impressionistic colors)

There are a few comments stating that Monet never painted all in one go (Alla Prima), however there are many paintings by him that have been painted outside in one sitting. One painting 'La Plage de Trouville' in the National Gallery, even has grains of sand embedded into the paint showing that it was painted outside on the spot. It's size is only 15" so could easily have been painted in one 30 minute sitting. Obviously his much larger paintings could not have been painted in one go. Monet said that no painting should be painted longer than 30 minutes due to the change of light etc, so some paintings were done and finished in 30 minutes, others were done in 30 minutes over the same time of day over a period of a season (before the light changed again).

Thanks a lot for your lesson! It's very precious (and rare). Few artists talking about Impressionists here on yt - it seems to me - forget to say, as you said instead at the beginning of this vid, the essential thing; all French impressionists just juxtaposed colors by little spots of pure color, never mixing them nor caring about the exact shape of objects. I believe this is fundamental when you talk about their technique. Many painters tend instead to mix them together. I've seen a lot of their paintings close, and it's incredible how shapes were row and rough. Well, I think you a huge job here, and with a great simplicity! Thanks!

Hi, I just wanted to thank you for posting this video. It was just what I was looking for! I tutor some students--and during our time together there is 30 minutes allotted to introduce them to a new artist....this week was Monet. Your presentation of his technique is very clear and easy to follow. I watched it once, went to class and demonstrated it--it was a wonderful time, and I actually enjoyed it to boot! My mother is an artist (more in the classical vein) so I grew up around painting but was far to impatient to do it myself--this was actually fun! Thanks again

Nice work but i look at art in a differen perspective out of the box. Painting like Vangogh said should speak to you. Vangogh and felow inpresionalist was a micro miniturist and hiding their communications under the prussion bluepaint and emerold green. To brake their code one should look at history of their time and the artistbiography. Common denominator is they were military oriented even Vangogh lived with his uncle in belgium who was a admirol in a ship yard that manufactured dragon ship and submarines. In a interesting time during an industriol revelution in the neatherlands. There is a lot we dont know about the impresionalist and the only one that was acused of spying was Renoir.

I have seen the Water Lillies by Monet in Clevland Art Museum Ohio. If you look at it side on using light reflection. It looks as if the painting was originally painted looking sideways at the pound. As it appears there is thicker paint on either side of the painting. Indicating reeds. Then changed to looking face down on the pound / Water Lillies. Interesting thought.
