Paint Opaquely Over a Red Priming

Red is the opposite of green, painting a scene with a lot of green, you can paint over a reddish or pinkish priming. The little bits of remaining red will perk up the greens and blues. This strategy works with any opaque medium (gouache, casein, acrylic or oil). I'll demo how a red casein priming adds spice and energy to the greenery and sky colors of this gouache study.
The plein-air painting shows a Kenworth cement mixer parked near the Hannaford supermarket in Kingston, New York. Big Jim Mushett, the cart guy, makes an appearance, and Smooth stays cool in the shade.

It's always reassuring to know that no matter what subject you cover, I always, always learn something new from you and your videos. It never feels like a lesson though - more like just a casual chat between friends that emparts some long since forgotten wisdom that only the most knowledgeable and wisest of sages has held secret, only now passing this lore on to his eager and attentive friends, who sit in awe of his mastery and greatness. Thank you for sharing your infinite wisdom with us lesser mortals.

James, you can take the most boring picture and make it a work of art. I have seen you turn a garbage scene into a beautiful painting. That is a true artist. Some of the subject matters that you choose I would never even think of doing because they’re just so mundane but somehow the finished product is a treasure. I love your channel. We have common friends.I used to be an artist at Disney and fiends with Tony Swatton… And a bunch of animator friends from Cal arts and Disney. I still learn a lot from you as I’m never at a place where I think I know it all. Every artist should keep learning and growing. Thanks again!

I know this comment has nothing to do with the video but I just wanted to say thank you so much James for making the Dinotopia series. It was a massive staple of my childhood and I am rediscovering it again in my 20s! I have so many fond memories of the pop up book and looking through the copies of The World Beneath from the library!

Beautiful as usual, James. Looks like it was real hot outside though, does that make it difficult painting or does gouache not struggle as much as acrylics?

Any water medium-watercolor, gouache, casein, and acrylic-dries super fast when the weather is hot and dry. If you want to slow drying time, a diffuser helps to shade the sunlight. Also you can use a water spray mister, or a blending medium. You have to think faster in the desert.

Awesome painting as always, Master Gurney! I bought myself recently some casein paints you use. I'll try to paint casein now. I'm so excited to paint it, can't wait for them to arrive. I'll try to use them for impressionism, because gouache doesn't work as good as oil and the tubes are too small, goes away pretty quick. Here where I live we have dry season and I'm quite alergic, it gets very difficult to paint oil this time of the year for me. Yet, I like painting oil impressionism a lot, so lets see if casein works too. I'm really in the hopes. And also seems like I'll have to gesso the canvas if I want to paint thickly casein there for avoiding cracking when it dries. Regards!

Another great painting and tutorial! I was wondering about the angle at which you hold your colors… Does having a more extreme angle versus keeping them horizontal help you to pick up the right consistency of paint on your brush while the more watery paint rolls down?

Hello mister James Gurney from a fellow painter. I'm a landscape and animalist painter from Poland. I have been using most of the techinques that the world can offer. For some reason the last one on my list is gouache. Can't wait to go into the fields and woods and become one with nature,paint and myself. I absolutly love your sketches. No grudge but i think that you are better in water based paints than in oils. It's the same case with me actually. I have a question to you. Do you use this wonderfull sketches to create bigger pieces, like many masters of landscape painting before ( Issac Levitan, Arkady Rylov, Józef Chełmoński, Edward Hopper,etc.)? PS. I don't know if you post about this painters on you'r blog but i recommend : Jan Stanisławski, Ferdynand Ruszczyc, Henryk Szczygliński, Józef Chełmoński. You may be interest in them. I really appreciate that you are showing that there is no disconnect between art and science. Best Regards

Do you know what you’ll be painting before you do the under painting color & choose color based on knowing what you will be painting? Or do you randomly choose an under painting color and then find a spot to paint and work with it?
@JamesGurney

More the latter. I usually have two or three different priming colors prepared in advance and choose one on the spot when I start a painting.

If you preserve the white, would thus work in watercolor?
@JamesGurney

You could preserve the pure white highlights by painting around them, and tone the rest, but if you use transparent watercolor over it, the priming color would influence everything.
