thank you.. for showing us the hidden flaws. I just applied silicone and tried to paint over it. I found a vid showing the use of shellac spray will do the trick. was about to order it online..but your vid saved my day. my question is ..is there any way to get over this problem other than sanding the area ?

I used a clear acrylic primer over the silicone and painted over it with oil-based deck stain. So far looks good, let's see if it holds up.

Would SBR have a chance of going some way to sealing the silicone as it is a flexible latex material? You would think that this situation is not a new one and companies, would think of a way to overcome the problem of keying/ sealing over silicone?

😮Thank you for the demonstration! Watching other videos I did go out and buy both shellac primers one liquid and one spray, but hadn’t used them. Thank goodness I hadn’t wasted my time and energy with that.

I actually found a way by accident after watching this video. Do your sealing with it. Then add a light layer ontop and blow fine saw dust over it. The wood will allow you it to bond to paint. Complete accident. Was cutting wood by some wet flex seal.liquid and caulk.

Awesome video. This shows all the incorrect answer's online and KZfaq. If you've ever tried to paint over silicone you've tried all of these. There's only 2 options caulk over the silicone which is the only band aid for this issue or removing the the silicone completely then redoing with paintable bathroom caulk is the cure..Silicone is a renovation nightmare and you'll see it around windows and in bathrooms. Complete nightmare right up there with wall paper removal.

Yes, silicone CAN be painted! I painted a red silicone stove pipe jack about 7 years ago and it is still sound. The trick is to use silicone caulk to paint silicone .You are limited to the colors you can find the caulk in. Thin the caulk with white gas to a brushable consistency and paint it on. Simple and it works. Al Fedor

I recently repainted a bathroom. After painting I wanted to recaulk around the top of the shower stall. Stupid me, I thought I had purchased a squeeze tube of white, paintable caulk. Turns out when I tried to touch it up with some paint, it doesn't adhere.so there are white spots on the gray newly painted wall. Can I just carefully spread latex caulk over those marks and repaint them?

How long after you painted did you rub it? Paint takes 5 to 7 days to fully cure / bond

I think the best method is use coloured silicone or colour it yourself with oil based paint or proper silicone pigments are only a tenner for a full set of colours.

hybrid polymer sealant will happily bond to silicone and is overpaintable rough up the silicone first and clean thoroughly with alcohol first before applying hybrid sealant job done

I have heard you can sand the silicone to rough it up and the paint can stick into the roughness, I havnt needed to try this yet.

I’ve thought the exact same thing with the UPVC windows being painted.... I can’t see any of them taking out all exterior silicone, to the spray the colour and then re do the sealant in a colour matched product. More time and mine money and less profit for them... I don’t even like the effect paint has over pure decorators caulk. The crazing it causes due to the flexibility of the caulk and the less flexibility of the paint.... I have often wondered if you used say a pollyfilla in a caulk gun that you can get from most places whether this is a similar formulation and has the same effect as caulk or not? Have you ever used it? Even using a tiny amount of caulk and leaving to dry for weeks on end you still get the crazing to some extent. Manufacturers should really dive deeper into this problem and come up with a better solution.

I'm just a diyer I didn't realize I can't cover the silicone with more blaclk woodstain so it blends in.I've try looking using Google but didn't have much luck. Great video and ever always a super explanation. I tend to use SBR in stead of PVA in sealing walls, would say SBR have a chance of going some way to sealing the silicone as it is a flexible latex material? Many thanks for your kind response.

I sealed my shower siding with clear silicone. Can I put a layer of white silicone over the clear silicone. The siding is white and the clear silicone looks bad. Will the white silicone adhere to the clear silicone and solve my problem? Thanks

This a video i wish I made. I refuse to use Silicone on any of my jobs. Brown exterior frame sealant I used to use Evomastic but sadly that product is hard to come across. I use Acrylic frame sealant instead. If Polyurethane frame sealants are available in Brown Black and White i will give them a test drive.

I have a question about doorsteps and peeling paint. The doorstep is concrete and has large patches of paint missing and flaking pieces that I’ve scraped off as much as I can with a scraper. The paint I have is Johnstone’s Doorstep Matt Red. Do I need to removal all the old paint from the doorstep, and if so what is the best method (I’ve tried a blow torch) or is it okay to scrape off as much loose paint as I can, and then paint over the top? Use frame sealant its better for painting over.

It's a nightmare... I detest silicone :( I insist on getting the customer paintable alternatives. poorly aplaticated silicone is the worse to clean up after some SOD.

It's because the silicone is oil based and the paint is water based so will not stick, that's silicones job to reject water!

That black you used looks like exterior masonry paint which is water base paint so it will come off even priming before been a better if you used a oil base paint to give a fairer test. Still good vid tho.

So all these spray paint UPvC guys what gaurentee are they offering on there over silicone and rubber sprays I don't think the paint will last 2 years

Interesting but I see you used a external masonry paint. Would it be any different using a internal based paint? Also not sure why you would paint over silicone in the first unless somone has made a bad job of saying fitting a window. If it was that bad you have them back to sort it. Caulk on the other you would paint over so can understand.

I don't care they are not paintable. I prime and paint them anyway. They work more often than not.

Seems that the yanks, The Idaho Painter, uses a clear or white caulk to create straight lines of paint between say a wall and skirting board. Is this someting we Brits do also??
