PAINTING THE MOMENT - LIGHT & LEDGES, KIMMERIDGE
Join me just after dawn on the stunning Jurassic Coast in Dorset. I'm in Kimmeridge Bay, painting the light as the sun rises, casting a warm glow on the headland and ledges.
This is simply a watercolour demonstration to watch and relax - the scenery is wonderful - but during the demo I will show you, among other things, how to observe carefully, how to improvise as your painting develops, and how to suggest detail with different brushstrokes.
For this painting, the materials I used can all be found on my website at www.oliverpyle.com/kit-resources, but a quick list of the basics are as follows:
Paints by Daler Rowney
French Ultramarine, Cobalt Blue, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Yellow, Burnt Sienna, Cadmium Red, Light Red, Permanent Rose.
Paper - Arches 140Lb Rough block
Brushes - Rosemary & Co, Sienna round and Daler Rowney Aquafine rigger
Etchr satchel and Manfrotto tripod.

Hi Olly - I feel rather as though I am repeating comments you have already heard, but simply must say that I can't thank you enough for sharing your expertise in a way that actually helps! I am very new to watercolour painting . I received a small set of watercolour paints for Christmas last year with a book and some watercolour paper. I didn't actually start trying to paint until February of this year without any skill at all. It was about the same time I discovered KZfaq and the blinding amount of information available for someone who is trying to start something new! When I stumbled upon one of your tutorials and was hooked! I have watched most of your videos multiple times and am "having a go" at some of the tips and techniques you have shared. As you have said, it is great fun! I retired last November and must say that at the age of 70, I can't tell you how happy I am to be excited to learn something entirely new! Thank you for sharing! pt

At 71 and years as a graphic artist, very tight and detailed illustrations, I've rediscovered watercolour. In trying to loosen up, I found your videos. Thank you for your wonderful informative, humorous and gentle approach. It's helping me let go, even the mistakes in learning are a joy. The added bonus of seeing places I visited in my childhood now as an Aussie of 50 years. 🙏

My favorite demo of all. Thanks, Olly! And the single most important takeaway from this: "Don't just cover everything with a dark wash." This has helped me so much in the moment of painting. Also, the most useless exercise I was taught as a beginner by a local teacher was "even wash = good, uneven wash = bad."

Whoooh that was magnificent when i was a small child i lived with my grandparents. here in TIllamook oregon on the ocean.there was a german man on pbs and he would speak with a german accent. he would start painting and add something i would tell him out loud not to do that. but he didnt listen.he would just say oh that is so beautiful, but it always came out great. and in this painting you did i did the same to you noooo dont mess it up. you didnt listen and you know what to do. it came out wonderful tyvm for that.

What a lovely setting. As I was watching, a question occurred to me. Being that you were literally on the shore, could you use sea water instead of fresh water to paint with? Would that result in a similar texture as sprinkling salt granules on a painting? Would it have any effect on the values of the different colors? Or would it just potentially accelerate corrosion on the brush ferrules and palette tin?
@oliverpyle-ourlandscape4442
@oliverpyle-ourlandscape4442 Жыл бұрын
You could - I have once before with a sketch on Swanage beach when I forgot my water! I didn't get the effect of sprinkling salt and noticed very little difference. I would worry about corrosion to brushes and palette if used regularly
