So each color region consists of three layers. (1) a background color in the middle value of the color; (2) a background texture often of dark value in the form of a glaze; this is often background noise but sometimes has specific geometry (e.g., grass); (3) a foreground texture that is directed and has a specific geometry to resemble the actual texture of the scene, e.g., leaves, grass and, here, water foam. Layer (1) is often done in acrylic but sometimes alkyd, both for their quick drying properties. Layer 2 is often a transparent layer of Ivory Black and Liquin or Galkyd, letting the color layer below come through. Layer 3 is often a bright, opaque layer -- the "highlights" and high tones of the region. Sometimes darks are re-established to increase contrast around the highlights. I think it all hinges on the drawing of the elements in each layer. Mr Smith makes it look easy but misplace the dots and it all falls apart and doesn't "read". There's some advanced spatial reasoning going on here to capture the texture in a realistic manner. I bet this guy had a college minor in Drawing. Thank you, Mr. Smith, for sharing your wonderful technique.

I just wanted to ask sir, if how much time you need to apply for a painting such as that to be done? Since, my teacher always put deadline on me and with all the modules all tangled up together and I can't seem to finish or put enough detail to my artwork and I just wanted to know if I'm just sooo slow or you really need to dedicate enough time.
