Painting a reflective sphere is challenging but it's a good skill builder. I'll show you how I do it by painting some gold Christmas ornaments. A fun seasonal project to try.

Moisture tips: In the winter the air indoors is too dry. Using a humidifier helps watercolour painting as you’re not racing against the paint drying too fast on the paper. Using a porcelain palette helps keep your paint moist longer because porcelain is cooler than plastic. Keep a puddle of water on your palette. It’s easier then to get the right amount of water (either in the top or bottom) of your brush as you’re working. It’s also more efficient and less distracting than having to reach for water, and checking the amount, each time you need it.

Where I live, in FL, it’s generally always humid, and seldom cold. No need for humidifiers here. We just have to turn off our ceiling fans. 😅

Ooh! These are so pretty! As I was watching you paint, I was thinking, "I don't think I can fill that in THAT fast and not have a hard edge...Then, I remembered your FANTASTIC 3-Part series on Washes- particularly "gradient" and "wet in wet" washes! I used the search feature on your Homepage and found them immediately- and watched them again! I'm glad I did, and I highly recommend that all beginners watch those videos if you haven't seen them. If you like to take your time painting carefully and methodically, these are for you! Thanks, Steve!! 😘🎄

It does seem like magic, the paint isn't metallic or shiny, tis just regular paint. It's like an optical illusion. Use different paint to make silver bells. I followed a tutorial to paint MYLAR balloons and had to look away, then look back before they looked shiny to me.

Thanks Steve, you are right about the many tips in this video. My favorite, lining up the reflections correctly. That never occurred to me but I can see where that small detail is important to what is noticed subconsciously and informing the brain of the rightness (?) Of what you're viewing. Merry Christmas, Steve, this was fun.

Have just come across this particular tutorial.. 10 months on... it's so helpful and well explained, Steve! And very relaxing to watch! I particularly love your comment.. 'What is it reflecting? I don't know.. anything! You don't need to use logic here!' This is so relevant for me, as I often have that problem, and try to make my paintings.. particularly reflections and shadows.. logical! Will try my best to follow your advice! One question.. . how would colours reflecting into the baubles work out? Perhaps you could demonstrate that in another tutorial! (By the way.. have also just watched your pumpkin tutorial.. from 7 years ago! Also great!) Thanks so much! Have just subscribed and look forward to your new tutorials!

Yep, same here! I was obsessing over the right one - was it a pumpkin that had suffered a horrific accident, or had it been left out way too long after hallowe’en? ☺️ Other than that, great video, very useful tutorial.

There tends to be a high pitch buzz when it comes to your audio. Maybe try a high frequency filter pass over your audio, see if that works? Anyways, great content like always! :)

What do you think about adding some metallic paint? If so...where? Or would it ruin the effect?
@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor 2 жыл бұрын
It's fine but won't give a reflection effect, maybe just a shimmer. Chrome-like reflectivity produces distinct shapes and values. Basically a spherical mirror.
