In this video I paint a hyper-realistic shark tooth using acrylic paints. We start out with some clips searching the beach for fossils and a slideshow of some of my recent fossil finds including shark teeth and shark vertebrae. I think that the anticipation of what you might discovery next and the thrill of actually find something new and cool are characteristics shared both in treasure hunting and the pursuit of creating art. After selecting a nice snaggletooth shark as my subject I share my approach and process for capturing this subject in a painting. I discuss how picking a subject that I have strong interest in helps me maintain focus. I touch on the influence of Hunt Slonem's bunny wall and paintings on these piece, specifically my color choices. I mention how there's no need try and aim for perfection when painting natural objects, there's no room for stress in these types of paintings. The other techniques shared primarily have to do with building up texture and depth, painting background to foreground and bouncing around between dark, medium and light tones.
