PAINTING ABSTRACT LANDSCAPES: LEARNING FROM DIEBENKORN / How do you get inspired by an artist or a painting without copying their work? In this abstract painting tutorial I show you step-by-step how I create a collage from a painting, actually two paintings, by one of my favorite artists, Richard Diebenkorn, a leading figure in abstract expressionism. The focus is primarily on abstract painting composition.

Hi Adele….You had me at Richard Diebenkorn. A few days ago I did a little ocean sketch at low tide and want to make a painting from it. This video is so helpful. It confirms that collage can help me get started. Being able to move and change elements around will help me plan. I have a difficult time getting started. We’ll see. Thank you for all of your videos. They’re wonderful.

Today I finished a collage with little 2 dimensional things I saved because I like them. However, it became quite a challenge as I painted a zebra like background. After doing that, my delicate pieces seem to be over powered. So I integrated the black and whites with the collage pieces. I don’t like it much right now, but I’m done! Your method looks like fun, so I’ll try it your way next time. Thanks for showing and telling!

This was really good. It gave me some ideas, which I still look for and look forward to even after art school in the 1970s :) My only suggestion is that you might think about finishing up a collage with the gluing process, using matte or gloss medium, whatever you like. Some new artists don't know much about the gluing up of collages at first. Well, just a thought :) And you've probably already done it! LOL

I agree with the many positive comments! Q: In the neutral collage you chose a soft yellow for the bottom but in another vid I think I heard you say you liked darker at the bottom to ground the image. I know there aren't hard and fast rules but I wonder if you could comment on why you went with the lighter value bottom? (I like it, I'm just interested in your thought process as I'm fairly new to all this). Thanks, Adele 🤓

Why do you tape the paper down that you work on? Is it just to keep it from moving around or is there another reason?

Hi Adele. I've noticed that his work varies widely in style and subject matter, and most of his books are divided by years. Would you mind sharing what two books you are using? Thank you.

Hi Adele, thanks for the video it was great. May I ask why you tape your paper down? How do you neatly trim the edges if you do that? I was thinking that paper left not taped down would be easier to trim around the edges to get them straight? Cheers

Why the collage? Is the final piece a blueprint for you next abstract landscape? Also, from where do you get your papers? Thanks Sarah.

How does it look like finished? Do you press the pieces afterwards to flatten them?

Adele I love the whole process, you give such great ideas. Would like to know what paper you stick pieces onto and do you varnish finished piece.

love your process. Why do you use a gray palette in other video? Where did you purchase your palette knife from previous video. Great idea using cotton swab for draw/painting!!

Sometimes I use the grey palette and sometimes the white. It depends on the colors I am mixing. You can get the plastic palette knife at any art supply store. It really is the only one I use. Cotton swabs, I love them for mark making. 🌸

I really enjoy your tutorials. The thing that caught my eye today is your smock. I have clothes that I just wear around the house and I have paint all over my shirts. Can I ask where you got your top?

My painting smock is so wonderful. I got it from a friend who is an antique dealer. He had a few of these antique linen ones from France so I bought all that he had. 🌸

@@AdeleSypesteynStudio I love French Country decor. Growing up my dream house was a French country cottage. That must be why I love your top so much.
