We're on our way to Jim's to watch him paint his 1957 Oldsmobile Rocket 88 with $12 oil based house paint and a $20 HVLP paint gun. This should be entertaining to say the least 😂

From one eccentric character on the West Coast, Jim is a wonderful, character. He has his way of thinking through his problems, and Chad, brilliantly, adds the magic ingredients (reducer and hardener), to make the plan workable. I love that Olds hardtop. It was the only Olds from that model year that I liked. What a fun hour.

Me and the painter I was working for, painted an old 85 dodge van I had years ago,, with some oil base, high gloss industrial paint and some foam rollers and brushes. Did a little sanding and primer smoothed some bumps and dents then taped and rolled it out. It looked great. It was already white but a lot of small dings and scratches damage. Was ready for work the next morning. It was so smooth. We knew nothing about spaying but rolled out hundreds of gallons, so that helped.

"20 ga. .... it's thicker than no metal." 😆😆😆 Addendum: Just got to the part where he used his fingers with the roller. So awesome. I might not agree with the methods, but I give high marks for gumption! Sounds like Jim wants a little patina on that sucker. Totally doable. Sand off some paint and squirt some vinegar and salt mixure on the bare metal. It'd be tough to match the variety of tones in rust, so might as well use real rust.

A man came into my dad's body shop one time wearing a raggedy old coat. His jacket had many long strings or perhanging you might say bits of cloth from the coat's lining hanging down in every direction. My dad had just finished painting a Ford and it looked like this fellow was going to get into the wet paint job at any moment. He was a talker, and he kept talking and all the time, and he seemed to get closer to the wet paint job at every exaggerated move he made. My dad took this as long as he could and finally decided he had to say something to the fellow, so he said, "That's fresh paint on that Ford there, so be careful. "Oh it won't hurt this old coat," the guy said.

I’ve painted houses and cars my entire life and it would drive me crazy to make logic out of Jim’s rambling. He’s just lost with a little bit of knowledge but I still would listen to him. The man works and try’s but that’s the main thing that makes me like and respect him.

There is something to that about the square pan versus the round pan. My mom used to throw all the leftovers into a kettle and cook up slop to feed the birds and she would take it out back and pour it in a cast-iron skillet and if it froze it would bust the bottom out of the skillet. But the square pan can gain size as its sides get pushed outward and accommodate the ice. The round can’t get any more round than it already is,so the bottom goes out. not the best wording but I know what point I was trying to make.

I paint my cars with Rustoleum . I thin it 50% with mineral spirits and apply it with a white foam roller. It flows out and smooth and dry to the touch in 30 min. It takes about six coats to get full coverage. I wet sand it after the third coat with 320 and 2000 after the 6th coat then I buff it. I get good results and its cheap and durable.

I used to work for a guy years ago that had his own business here in the Uk that bought second hand ford transit vans from auctions.we used to prep them ,clean them up then the painter sprayed them with dulux household gloss paint .every one was painted white .and when they were done .they looked every inch as good as the paint ford put on and lasted longer .ford paint in the uk on vans is appalling .he then resold them back at the auctions.I did all the mechanical work on them if they needed that type of work.❤❤

I bet this Oldsmobile's factory blue used to be lighter. Jim's lucky i dont live a lot closer. I bring him some cars to paint this winter. And I'd probably try to talk Jim into sellin the Oldsmobile to me. Lol It might be a few months before that paint dries at those temps. Even at 45-50F it takes days...been there done that. 🙄 Oh and Ive seen some crazy cheap paint jobs! Textured rollers, and latex house paint, the water-base stuff. Ive seen people throw steal dust onto tacky paint to create fake rust. It takes a while patina, vinegar speeds it up. lol

You guys need to get some of those heat lamps, you probably find them better for people that grow the wacky tobacky. But you plug them in and watch the disc barely moving and turn one on and it starts going like a disco record round n round.. Man the Acrylic I get down at the paint supplies you thin like 50/50 . .I like it because you only need to buy half the paint to do a car than 2 pack and it's easier to sand and work with.. Plus you really not supposed to spray 2 pack in a residential area, you used to be able to get away with it - but now they are cracking down on it and starting to fine people , and I'm not talking parking fine money either..

Reminds me of the teenage days when I used to go to STANDARD BRANDS PAINTS.....and buy Yacht hull enamel. mix the blue and white oil base paint together and paint an old falcon, Chevy 2 or other car to get it ready to sell. Even did this with an old 58 and 9 chevy truck. Better than primer and made it look good to sell.
