How to paint fog and mist with watercolors. Watercolour wet-on-wet technique is particulary good for painting fog and mist scenes.
My PATREON MEMBERSHIP PAGE: www.patreon.com/user/membersh... - in addition to ad-free content you get exclusive content (new videos will be more in depth than those on my KZfaq channel), hi-resolution reference photos, photos of my finished painting, and drawing outlines where available. Other benefits are also included.
My teaching manual: Mastering Watercolors - A Practical Guide: amzn.to/3ZF2FRW
This video is part of my beginner watercolor series, though also useful for more experienced artist.
I cover atmospheric or aerial perspective and how to take advantage of it when creating misty or foggy scenes with watercolor paints. Reflections in mist and fog are also covered.
This is the 21st video in my beginner watercolor artist course.
If you are a beginner, and this is the first of my videos in this series you are watching, then I highly recommend that you go back and begin at Watercolor Class One and do the exercises in each. These exercises are what I used to put my beginner face-to-face students through, before allowing them to progress to more advanced subjects. Even now, before a student, new to watercolor, can join my online class they have to first prove they have studied and applied this beginner lessons. In this way, new students are able to more easily join my more advanced classes.
I also have a couple of watercolor painting books which I published and distribute through Amazon.
The first one, which has sold over 10,000 copies is bascially my teaching manual and is titled:
Mastering Watercolors - A Practical Guide.
The second is full of step-by-step demonstrations and is titled: Watercolor Step By Step: amzn.to/3z4YXEu
Both books are available in kindle format and paperback.
You can also find a lot of useful information on my website: www.paintingwithwatercolors.com/

I'm so glad I found you. You have changed my perspective on what makes a teacher. There are abundant teachers out there, but you, Sir, are the highest quality, I'm honored to learn from you. Thank you for your beautiful scenery, I will give a go, either way, it's an important lesson. i will take much away from it to how water to add or remove, how to treat my paper, mixing paint. 😊😊😊

This was so helpful! I've been learning to work in watercolor for a short time. I wanted to paint the scene of a foggy morning using as reference a photo I took while kayaking. Thanks so much for posting this video. It really helped me to achieve the effect I wanted!

Thank you for showing us how distance affects colors and how objects in the distance should be painted particularly when there is a mist. A beautiful picture!

I have been struggling with a foggy mountain scene for awhile so this lesson was very helpful. Would you consider a waterfall scene? I bought your first book and these youtube lessons are a nice addition. Thank you.

Yes, I have waterfalls on my list of future videos. Not for a little while though as I have a number to do before then. Thank you for purchasing my book, I appreciate you support. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I am happy for this, as I experience may of these situations in Vermonter, USA. Why do you use such thin paper? I use 300 gsm Arches.
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright 6 ай бұрын
Bescause it works just as well, is half the price, and I can carry twice as much paper when I travel overseas on a plein air painting trip. I will do a video on it some time. 😊

Hi Kim, are you asking for a download link for the sketch, or just to include the drawing section within the video? Very happy for the feedback, thanks.

Your the first artist I’m seen use 90lb. Would you share why you like that paper. Thank you
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright Жыл бұрын
I will have to produce a video on this subject. I basically use 90lb because it is lighter, so if I travel it is half the weight, it also does the job as well as heavier weight paper, it also dries quicker which is important when painting on a cold morning, it is also half the cost. I have only used Arches paper, so cannot comment on other 90lb material.

What size fan brush did you use and is that brush for water color or acrylic? I love the way you explain thanks
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright Жыл бұрын
It is a cheap hog hair fan brush often used with acrylic or oil paints. I use it for my watercolours. Yhe hairs on it about about 2 cm long.

How do you dry your painting Joe? Just a hairdryer? Or are they too hot?
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright 11 ай бұрын
Just a hair dryer, just don't put it to close to the paper while the paint is wet or it will move the paint around.
@yvetteafrangui518

What kind of paper you are using that can absorb so much water ? And when you wet the paper does the paint spread? Thanks in advance
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright Жыл бұрын
I use Arches, 185 gsm paper. If you are referring to my wetting of the back of the paper, that is how much wetting it can take. Most other professional, similar weight, papers would need about the same amount of wetting.
