In this video I go over what I use and the procedures that I go through to paint a lathe while it's all together. I use catalyzed enamel based paint. I also usually take these things completely apart however in this case I am painting it as a complete unit. This procedure Usually provides a very durable and good looking finish. This old Harrison M300 will be ready to start working again real soon!

Great advice and video, I'm getting my SB ready to paint of course it won't be in the same league as yours. Having the skill set and experience goes a long way. Looking Great.

They do end up looking really nice after they have been repainted properly. Good luck with your project.

Fantastic machine, you'll be able to take some serious cuts with that. I highly recommend using a VFD, it makes speed changes fast. I have a Harrison M280, and it's been perfect for me. It has the power and rigidity that the old craftsman lathe I used previously didn't have. How much was the cost of the rebuild?
@precisionmachineshed

$5k for the rebuild, then I painted it. I've had quite a few machines with VFD's. Not sure I'll do this one, but I've done a few barrels with it already and working great.

@@precisionmachineshed Nice. I have a Royal 5C collet closer for my machine, do you still need part dimensions to make one? I saw a comment of yours on your other video of the machine.

How about paint prep? Did you blast the machine or needle scale it b4 putting the new paint on?

It didn't have any peeling or flaking paint. The paint that was still there was in good shape other than the worn spots. I doused the machine in acetone, 1 coat of primer and 2 coats of catalyzed enamel over everything.

Its looking really good, did the shop grind the ways on it?
@precisionmachineshed
@precisionmachineshed 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, they reground the ways, scraped in cross slide and compound, and made sure headstock, tailstock, and spindle were aligned.

@@precisionmachineshed They did all the work. Painting it is the easy part. Hey I learned the hard way about rustoleum. The stuff does not tolerate acetone at all! For that I don't recommend its usage. I use a lot of acetone (tig work) and isopropyl for cleaning down stuff.

I don't use acetone over or on my machines, so no worries. Just finished painting tonight and I probably spent 10-15 hours, cleaning, priming, and 2 coating 3 different colors. Quite a bit of work, but they probably only spent 30-40 hours or so rebuilding the machine.

What catalyst did you use? I want to make sure I use something that’s compatible with implement enamel. Thanks. Paul. Oh, thanks for the video.

I used "Old 55 Tractor & Implement Clear Hardener/Catalyst" that you can purchase from Fleet Farm. If you don't have a fleet farm near you I would assume any implement catalyst would work. I have also added this stuff to oil base Rust-oleum protective enamel and have had good results as well. Any of these hardened paints will chip, but it makes it quite a bit more durable.
