Fellow hermit here, I always tell people that it's no accident that we live so remotely. Interacting with people is exhausting. I love catching up with friends, but because I see them so infrequently it always ends up being really intense. As for IG - it was fun once and like everything Zuckerberg touches it has become poison. I mainly keep it so I can send funny animal videos to my niece, it's our love language.

It always amazes me that you tend to use quite a large brush haha. I have to push myself to pick up the larger brushes. They tend to scare me. Love all your videos Sarah. Your voice is very calming and love your honesty.

Good comment by viewer to paint with a limited palette of colours you like. I also experiment with different colours for the underpainting as will affect the finished product somewhat when layering the gouache. Another tip is to work from black and white photos so you have to focus on values but can experiment with different colours. Beginners tend to need to copy the photo colours as they are still learning to mix colours they see. More advanced painters can branch out and be more experimental. I always look forward to your videos, both here and your ‘Sarah in Scotland’ videos. Thanks for what you do!!!

Your work inspired me to try painting on my bed or couch. I have long-covid and I am currently unable to sit or stand for long periods. This meant I was struggling to paint. I fell into despair and then I remembered an episode of yours where you said you had a mini palette by your couch so you could paint and I was inspired. I have since this 'revelation' painted 2 little mini Gouache paintings. Definitely not the size I normally paint, but gosh they have felt like I have achieved a major masterpiece lol. When your health is beyond your control, you can get proud of the smallest of achievements. The fatigue is absolutely mind/physically crippling at times, painting gives my soul a relief. I am grateful for your sharing and generosity in these videos. I love your content, you are genuine and have such a healer nature.

I soooo relate to the vocal cords problem! I can handle 1 - 3 hours with friends, after that, my throat is on fire. I think it relates to the fact that all my muscles tend to be very tight. For example, I can't really squat or keep any other position for a longer period of time, my muscles start cramping. True that I feel rather silly having that problem. :D Thank you for the sketch and chat session, I'm working on some blueberries in gouache while listening. I'm working on finding peace in doing art, rather than the immense anxiety spike, and I've been seeing lots of improvement lately, a lot of it thanks to you.

I think that drawing and paintings that are done for learning definitely have their place just like more finished pieces do. The main thing is to enjoy it. As for Instagram, I don’t post often either because I find I do better mentally if I don’t focus on making things to post. Instead I focus on making things for the joy of it and maybe I will want to share it. 😅

Sarah, thank you for your posts. 1st, use other people’s work as inspiration, not to compare. For one thing, there isn’t too much out there in the way of gouache artists that have your command for the medium anyway. Your style is awesome, I love what you do. Just keep doing what your doing, I feel there is much greatness coming your way in the future. . I wish I had what you have going at your age. I’m 65 yr old guy in the states and have dabbled in the arts for years. Have finally settled on watercolor and gouache to play with in my retirement years (besides my miniature work) Keep being awesome! Corey

Social media is soul-sucking. I'm only on YT because of people like you Sarah. I love your artwork, but I also deeply resonate with your "ramblings"!!! I think that what you are describing is the mind of an artist and one with deep sensitivity to the world around them. People with this gifting have to carefully curate a life that is sustainable for them, on their own terms, not what others are doing or can do and be. The exquisite beauty of being a sensitive person is that there is no one in this world that can bring your specific gifts to the world but you!!! As you lean into being yourself and embracing all that you are and aren't, you can better hone your gifts and allow them to be expressed in your own unique ways!!! I honor the beautiful soul who is mourning and feeling so deeply the loss that you have experienced. I pray that you will find comfort and solace, and that you will come out on the other side of this pain a deeper, more compassionate, more loving, more empathetic person who shares those gifts through your art and your narration. Our world has enough "hard" people. We need your sensitivity, gentleness, kindness and the way that you see beauty and point it out to those who are willing to slow down enough to listen. I'm on the same journey, Sarah. I'm weighed down by a mountain of grief that was thrust upon me. I am trusting that it is just part of my journey, and I know that I can see others with more gentleness and compassion and humility after having walked this path for many years. Sending you gentle hugs and lots of love 💕.

"People with this gifting have to carefully curate a life that is sustainable for them, on their own terms, not what others are doing or can do and be." I feel this very strongly. I have to be very careful with how I interact online and in person. Especially at the moment because of my grief which feels so heavy. One moment I am "fine" and the next I crumble to pieces. I feel like I will never be the same as before. I just take it a day at a time. But it helps to share beauty and try to focus on what is good and share it here. It gives me something positive to focus on.

Inspiring video. Can sympathise with the back pain, I suffer with on going back problems. I just know my limits and watch out. Also, when my hubby is away, or taking a nap, then I also watch stuff I like to watch, which he doesn't. Sounds like a common problem. 😄 Well, I had to take a break from painting for a while during our move, which was physically and emotionally very taxing. Things are calming down now and apart from a few things that need to be taken care of, but can wait, there is now more time for painting! Just setting up my little corner at the moment. All the best to you and I hope you are feeling better soon. Valerie

Always such beautiful work. Thank you for sharing your process. For exploring color, I'd also suggest folks to select a limited palette and work with that. Find one in colors that either excite you or maybe that you're not used to working with, then paint your subject with just those three colors. You'll be surprised what comes out.

I really enjoy your videos even though I’ve never tried to paint with gouache. I’m a transparent watercolourist but much of what you explain applies for me also. I completely understand what you mean about losing your voice when you haven’t been with people regularly. In my working life, I’m chairing meetings and talking with clients, colleagues for most of my 8 hour day, then .i became ill and was on medical leave for 12 weeks. When .I returned to work, my vocal cords really struggled and it took quite a few weeks for them to recover.

Back pain kept me from painting and now I can do almost an hour before I realize I'm in pain, but also in the flow! Your channel is growing because it is so lovely to watch you paint, listening to you ramble is one of my favorite things to do. Your brushstrokes are so definitive. I'm still very new to gouache but painted the tree from GOT for one of my sons for Christmas. And yes I have streamed all of the content. About to rewatch the original "the Haunting" I read it in school and it's an annual thing. Painting while listening to a familiar movie helps me focus on what I'm doing. To Kill A Mockingbird was last week. Now who's rambling? Love your work and your videos.

Yes, sparingly. I can only handle 30 minutes or so before I'm too cold. Sometimes I paint from inside the car but the windows fog up. Mostly I just hike and take photos to paint from the studio. I usually paint some holiday cards each year but it depends on what's happening!

I want to frankly explain my thoughts to you. These little lessons are interesting. But they require a lot of investment in the work of making videos. These videos consume time and energy for the artist. I think your artistic skills has gone beyond painting three apples and giving time to shoot this kind of video. There are plenty of basic tutorials videos on KZfaq. While you take so much time to make a video like this, same as thousands on the market, you could better choose instead to fully express yourself as Sarah, an artist and painter of her own art and style. I think that once again you are letting yourself be trapped by the system instead of, now that it is really time, taking the plunge to create real artistic work, painting a few slightly larger formats and a let down few sketchbooks only destinated to be sketchbooks. You could paint more often on canvas or oil panel. I want to be nice to you by talking like that, I don't want to disrupt you. It's just because I have already seen your work on a larger scale and since I have observed you for years I have seen a young woman now capable of pushing her contemplation, capable of painting canvases to the real dimension of your wonder and of your passion. You have forged your outlook and you have tamed matter, you have found a spiritual path of communication between you and nature. You live in love. So I would be sad not to see the great artist that you are into your heart, emerging from your past efforts ! Please go for it, go for you, instead of becoming a product of KZfaq, a slave to the internet, live your own life ! There will always be people to love your paintings and want to hang it on their walls and they could be much more if you project your inner strength, passion, love and skills out of the internet. I wish you all the best and to never forget that time always passed more quickly than it seems. The more you grow, the more time seems to be short.

I see where you're coming from. But right now, I am so deeply lost in my grief of losing Vader. Doing small sketches is more than I can handle most days. Recording and sharing it might seem like 'nothing' but at the moment it's all I can handle. And it gives me something to look forward to and help me along. I have never, and will never, make a video to "show off" what I'm capable of, even if it seems I should. I only make videos with whatever is flowing through me at that time.
