So amazing watching this painting develop. The figures in the beginning seem 'so dark' (to me) and then the magic how everything around them makes them alive. Beautiful demonstration of your inspiring knowledge of colors and values. thank you fran usa

Truly captured the glaring light of the sun on these figures! Your handling of the water’s edge with the sand was beautifully rendered. I learned a lot!

It’s so amazing watching how you paint all these figures backlit in this painting. The skin colors seem so dark at first but your vibrant colors and values are spot on!! Thank you so much for sharing your process. I learn a ton from watching you!

They seem dark because of the white of the paper. It’s why so many people paint on a toned surface

Love this. When you added the dark colorful skin tones I wondered if they were too dark. But they really convey the bright sunlight. Skin tones are very dark at the beach and highlights almost blinding. I love all your grays.

That’s why artists usually paint the background first with a midtone color to judge the value of colors better but she doesn’t seem to need it, she’s already done that in her head, truly amazing

Can I use my acrylic paint as if it were Gouache? Before I invest in Gouache, I thought I’d try your process first as it is definitely different from oil and acrylic painting. I so love your inspiring work.
@LenaRivo

Thank you, Kare. Yes, you can use this technique with acrylics. If you paint on watercolor paper your colors will be much more opaque and look closer to gouache than if you paint on canvas. The biggest difference between gouache and acrylics is that with acrylics you can’t make edges between shapes softer because acrylics dry permanently. To me, a painting without soft edges is an unfinished one, that’s why I prefer to paint with gouache or oil. Sometimes I use open golden acrylics that dry much slower that ordinary acrylics. These feel much closer to gouache.
