This week we get down on some fantastic looking Tallarn Mukaali Rough Riders sent in by Micah R! I painted them to match his existing army, bases included, and tried to employ some new paints while doing so. Specifically the Vallejo Metal Color paints were used to get a nice metallic finish on the model.
I also used a neat trick of airbrushing through moss to achieve a unique but relatively natural looking skin for these space camels. Here’s an amazon link if you’d like to pick some up on the cheap!

It's been a while, but I absolutely loved the look of Vallejo metallics. I love how close to real metal they looked compared to a standard colored paint. The ones I used the most were copper, gun metal, and silver.

i can absolutely verify that forgeworld models are porous to paint, typically its more of an issue with white primers but ive taken to matt varnishing them to get the best results. its worth noting that forgeworld resin can be stripped using mineral spirits but it has to be dried in silica gel and re varnished before being repainted.

"a thing to keep in mind is resin dust is toxic ..." Thinking back to coveting a ton of cadian resin models when I was 12 with a file.
@Vorpal_Wit
@Vorpal_Wit 4 жыл бұрын
With a file you're ok. The dust from a file is too large/heavy to aerosolize. You only really need to worry about resin dust if you are sanding - espesially any powered sanding, in which case wear a mask, and preferrable do it outside. Remember to blow or wash you models clean after any sanding, as there will be dust all over the model.
@eBayMiniatureRescues

Yeah I had no idea it was toxic when I was younger, I’ve sanded a fair bit of resin....so far so good :)

I always find that painting the rider and mount separately works best on cavalry, and, as you said, it is always easier to assemble if the models are pinned. Plus, a lot of horse models seem to have weak ankles and survive better if I run a pin well into the leg. Admittedly, all the horses I've built/painted were pewter models. That said, if I had an air brush, I'd probably use the crap out of that technique with the lichen/moss. Really cool, and one of the reasons I love watching your channel.
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 4 жыл бұрын
These models had half of the rider molded onto the mount, so I just pinned the upper half and put them together, luckily, unlike a lot of mounted infantry, these weren’t hard to reach anywhere, so that was pretty nice. The lichen/moss trick is pretty handy, you could paint it by hand of course, it’s just gonna take a little bit longer. Thanks for watching!!

Those look awesome, though this video does make me sad that not only are Tallarn, along with many other regiments discontinued, but the rough riders are no longer available (aside from the very expensive forge world stuff.) Something about cavalry charges in 40k just always seemed mad, suicidal, but epic at the same time. I'm in the middle of converting some but would love to see affordable, plastic rough riders back in GW.

The rider almost looked cell shaded next to your finger. Then in the finished shots It went back to your normal level/style of quality. You are right though, there was a lot of detail on the mounts.
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 4 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I didn’t do anything to the rider after that. My guess is that since it’s up close during those shots that you can really see the lines of paint and detail in the actual model, whereas under the lights on the turntable some of that detail is getting lost. Idono, but I’ll have to do some tests to see how my camera is really working, I wonder if it’s hurting the outcome a little.

I doubt it. It is probably jyst the diffrence between the extreme close up, and the "reasonable distance". It was not bad either way. It just made the shadows pop.

I see some of your brushes are hooked. Any tips on how to combat this?
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 4 жыл бұрын
This particular brush was just at the end of being usable. I’ve had it for quite some time and cleaning it really hasn’t been helping to combat that issue. The brush is a GW M Glaze brush, so most of its use has been pulling paint in the same direction, so every time I use it, it starts to curl in that direction. Generally if this starts to happen I use The Masters brush cleaner and conditioner, clean all the paint out, and leave a little bit of the soap on and shape the brush to a sharp point, then I leave it to dry that way. It holds the tip and corrects the bend, but over a long period of time it stops working. So use cleaner until it doesn’t work, then go buy a new brush. Hope that answers your question :)
@AJDeLaRosa
@AJDeLaRosa 4 жыл бұрын
@@eBayMiniatureRescues I follow the same regimen, but usually end up with hook tips. Might just be the lifespan of the brushes. Thank you for your reply!
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 4 жыл бұрын
My guess is it’s the brushes, I’ve had other brushes that have lasted much longer. I like the glaze brushes though, they have a nice point ( most of the time lol) and hold a good amount of paint without drying out. Honestly though, it’s probably time I get nicer brushes...
@richkanu

Maybe it's a tactic for rougher, more naturalistic looking textures, but the tip of your brush is giving causing me pain :)
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 4 жыл бұрын
Lol I knew it would, this brush is getting pretty old, I’ve had it for quite some time. There’s a stray hair that won’t stay down, but the rest works just fine. I have to make a trip to the lgs and pick up another one. It’s actually a GW Medium Glaze brush, so you’re not far off in saying it was specifically for doing the texture. It’s a different feeling brush to the others they make.
