I’ve been drawing since I was a little kid, maybe 5 years old, but I didn’t start oil painting until college, about 10 years ago now. I took art classes in school and eventually decided to major in art in college too, so yeah I’ve had a good bit of training but I also practice a lot and just always try to be working on something creative. My problem is focusing on one thing because I enjoy so many forms of art. 2D, 3D, digital, writing, and so on. So I kinda bounce around to different things. But drawing and painting are definitely my foundation. For a beginner I would recommend practicing drawing first, and shading. Learning how light and shadows work on different simple objects. Then work up to more complex things and eventually humans. Life drawing class (drawing nude models) was one of the most helpful classes I took as far as how much it improved my work. You can find places that do open classes like that to the public. They also have life painting classes. Mainly just practicing a lot will make you better, but knowing what to practice is where to start. It doesn’t feel like practice if you enjoy doing it. :)
