Yeah I’d say about every three paintings I do, I give my brushes a thorough cleaning and conditioning. Not only does it help the paintings but it helps the longevity of your brushes.

Thnx for the advice. The brand you mentioned is very expansive in the Netherlands. I pay for 9 tubes with 37 ml in it 109 euro's. Winsor and newton i pay for 10 tubes with 200ml in it. 100 euro's.

@@morgoth_7487 Oh wow! That’s interesting. On a side note, if you’re ever forced to deal with lower quality paint, and by lower quality I mean paint that’s not as thick; knead the tube a little before squeezing out your colors. Then place them on cardboard for 15-20 minutes before you start your painting. The cardboard will absorb excess oil.

Hey, Linda. First off let me say ask all the questions you want. And thank you so much for the support and feedback! So first off I would like to be clear that on my channel, I work with oil paints. The consistency and medium of oils will differ from acrylic paints which are water based. Now I'm not sure which paints you're using based on your comment but either way, what makes clean up the easiest is to soak up and wipe away as much paint as possible with paper towels. However do not wash oil paints or any oil based anything down your drain. I'm no plumber but I'm sure that would be bad haha. But just to be safe, throw away all unused paints, acrylic or oil in the garbage. As for being able to tell how much paint is enough, I've been painting my whole life and sometimes I still don't know how much is enough. I know this can be wasteful and frustrating but in this particular video, I'm painting on a smaller canvas. So I knew for sure I wouldn't need as much paint. But always remember, maybe to be on the safe side, start out with just a little bit of paint because you can always add more if you need. This will minimize the use of wasted paint. As for buying paints that are labeled with the actual colors, I'd highly recommend shopping in person at an art store. For example, the brand I use are oil paints by Windsor & newton, and they clearly have the label and color on the tube making it easy to determine. Thank you so much! Brushes need to be thoroughly cleaned and conditioned with extra care in order for them to last longer and create the intended effects they can do for you. Every now and then, or after two or three paintings, the oils from your mediums and solvent will run down into your brush. This can create problems over time from the residue that builds up. Especially with natural haired bristles that are normally recommended for this technique and style of painting. Special soaps and conditioners are available online on most art stores. Even the Bob Ross brand has its own conditioner for this purpose. But regular ol’ baby oil can do the trick. Just be careful, a little goes a long way. Some even use baby oil itself all the time to clean their brushes during painting. But be careful because some have had different experiences with that. Hello again, Linda! So liquid white is a thin white colored bee coat that you apply onto the canvas before you actually start painting your scene. This is oil based and requires your canvas to stay wet with this first coat throughout your work. That's why it's called "Wet on wet painting". The trick being that we are constantly adding wet layers of paint on top of other wet layers without mixing mud. Sounds more complicated than it is but believe me, with practice anyone can do it...I'm living proof of that lol.

You want to get yourself artist grade brush cleaner soap which you can find on artists websites. I recommend searching Jerry’s Artarama as a good source. Hey, Susan that’s a great question! And a simple fix. Simply just add more of the liquid base but only to the area of the canvas that has dried. And here’s a tip- I usually paint on 16x20 canvases but in this video I’m using an 11x14. This also allows me to finish a painting sooner and ensures I will get the work done in one day. But I understand maybe you want to take your time with it, as you should. Depending on the environment where you paint, your base medium will most likely not dry out on you. It should even stay wet for a couple of days and your finished work will be wet for just as long anyway. So you should be good 👍

Yes, all my videos are in oils. You can do wet on wet with acrylic but you have to mix your paints in with other mediums and retardants which delay the drying time for acrylics. I personally never tried this method myself but one day I will do a video on it.

Thank you very much! I am using Winsor & Newton oils. It’s one of the thickest paints you can find. Gamblin is another good brand that’s thick. And you want a thick medium such as those when it comes to this technique.

@@Kennysgreasypaint i use winton series 1 and they are not so thick as they were in the past, maybe you are using winsor artist paints?

@@jimibasha So I just tried looking online now and I wasn’t sure of the difference. In a future episode I’ll feature an up and close look at the ones I specifically use. In the meantime, try laying out your paint on some cardboard first. This is will absorb A LOT of excess oil, leaving you with heavy pigment. Let me know how that works out.

@@jimibasha Actually upon further research, I also found out on a forum thread from Wetcanvas.com that according to one of their users, the series number indicates a price point because some pigment colors are more expensive. And then according to another user, “Winton” refers to their student grade paint.

You can find special soaps made specifically to clean brushes in local art stores. I recommend a soap called the masters brush cleaner because it also has built in conditioner in the product.

They sell special soaps that thoroughly clean your brushes with a built in conditioner. You can find them in art stores or simple search online. I give my brushes a good cleaning with them after every three or four paintings. I highly recommend.

@@johndoe-rm2yx When it comes to painting and art in general, my whole life. But this specific technique that I make videos for have only been doing it a year. But the truth is you’ll always still make mistakes and never be satisfied. And that’s a good thing, because you learn and learning is progress. Just be patient practicing. One tip that helped me is not just watching Bob Ross and Bill Alexander, but also listening to them just as carefully. I discovered tiny little details here and there that I wasn’t doing but made all the difference once I got the hang of it.

For this specific painting technique, I am self taught. But I sort of gained an advantage when I started because I have been doing artwork of all kinds my whole life ever since I was old enough to even pick up a crayon.

Generally speaking, if you use the same or similar brushes, the technique still works. When you say water mixable, do you mean water colors or water mixable oils?

If you’re referring to the marks I made with the background trees, then it’s a good thing I mentioned that you can leave them out of your own painting 👍
