Painting With Light was a series of programs shown on UK TV on BBC2 in 1987. It features six artists as they explore the Quantel DPB-7001 Digital Paint Box. Production was a collaboration between the BBC and Griffin Productions.
Some of the episodes were edited and compiled and released onto Laserdisc for the North American market.
This video is a restoration of that Laserdisc version. It features four of the original programs in a compiled and edited feature.
This features David Hockney, Larry Rivers, Howard Hodgkin and Jennifer Bartlett.
I would like to thank everyone involved with the Domesday86 and ld-decode projects for their assistance in getting the highest quality video off the Laserdisc.

I got a chance to use the Paintbox at VCF East this year. Having done digital art for decades now, it's amazing how quickly I adjusted to working on it, and how capable it was for the era in which it was created.

It is quite funny to see how an artist uses the color-try-out-area. As a non-painter/artist, I would dig around the color selector and not try it out, like on an old school color palette. And they are painting in layers, which does not work the same on the paintbox as on a framed canvas.

Yes the mixing palette is unique to the Paintbox, many have said how they are surprised how Photoshop never tried to implement something similar!

Considering it's not what Quantel was designed for and the artists had never used it before, they did'nt do too bad. But 1 hr 12, that poor stylus. LOL.

Give Paintbox to a graphic designer and they create cutting edge TV graphics, other worlds. Give it to a pretentious "serious artist" and they create sixth-form level shite smears.

i think six-form was being generous. I was waiting for a masterpiece to appear and it didn’t. I think a 3 year old with an ipad would do better whilst sucking on a farleys rusk (are they still a thing? 😅)

I do get what your saying. Art is a very subjective thing but freeform art as shown here is different to what would be produced for TV work, which has to serve a purpose. Freeform and hand drawn art like this needs to have no meaning or purpose.

@@ErraticPT the facts are he wasn't "ill", actual knowledgeable art critics love his work and collectors have continued to buy his work (which also has a good secondary resale market) for 50 years. Your points are false and your opinion is your bitter or envious own. Love to see your artwork, or medical qualifications. Ah, no - you just criticize others, too scared to put your own art or life out there in public for fear it may be judged...

Sure you can think his work is terrible but the positive critical acclaim, increasing sales values and popular exhibitions across the world maybe, just maybe mean he is more talented than you think. In terms of him being "ill", what medical opinion or observation of yours led you to that assertion?
