This Mitsubishi Pajero is a very popular four-wheel drive in Australia, and today, we’re going to take a look at the very first NP model Pajero as a second-hand buy. And the model we’re reviewing is a 3.5 litre, Petrol, Exceed.
Mitsubishi designed a monocoque body for the previous NM Pajero in 2000, and the NP model is the first face lift Mitsubishi would give the well accepted 4WD.
Toyota Prado Review: • Toyota Prado Review - ...
Toyota Hilux Review: • Toyota Hilux Review - ...
Mitsubishi Triton Review: • Mitsubishi Triton Revi...
As a suburban warrior, the Pajero drives more like a car than a 4wd, and that’s thanks to the independent front and rear suspension, which for an off-road vehicle some think is a disadvantage. But put a 50mm lift, a decent set of shocks and some all-terrain tyres on the Paj, and it’ll go just about anywhere that a sensible driver will want to take it.
The Super Select Gearbox was fitted as standard in the NP Exceed, in fact you couldn’t get an Exceed in a manual, and why would you when the super select system is such a reliable and easy to use gearbox control system.
Unlike many 4wd’s in its class, the Pajero had, and still has the option to drive in 2WD, and then change into 4wd at highway speeds. The centre diff lock can be engaged on the run when 4wding. And with a quick stop, you can have the Pajero in four-low for the more serious tracks.
For general 4WD tracks and trails, the Pajero eats it up. It drives well off-road and provides good feedback through the wheel, which in many newer model 4wd’s is disappearing. The Independent suspension on the Pajero does limit the wheel travel somewhat, but if you pick your lines carefully and drive the tough stuff sensibly, it’s very capable over even the hardest of tracks.
The 3.5 litre Pajero has good power at 140kw and reasonable torque 303nm, but it also has a small 90 litre tank which will limit the length of a big outback journey, so be sure to pack some jerry cans.
In terms of buying a second-hand Petrol Exceed, expect to pay between 4 and 10 thousand dollars depending on condition and number of kilometres. You’ll be lucky to get one with less than 200 thousand kilometres, and for a petrol engine, it’s likely to need extra care and more regular servicing to keep it in tip top shape.
As an off-roader, the Pajero is a great 4WD, and if you want to take it to the office on Monday, it’s still a comfortable ride. As a second-hand four-wheel-drive, for the money, they still stack up against the competition, but our recommendation would be to consider the Diesel model over the petrol.
Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, we’d love to hear your stories of buying 2nd hand 4WD’s. Make sure you watch our other review videos, linked in the description below.

I have owned a 2002 Pajero NP for the past 5 years and I have asked it to go places I had no business asking it, My heart would give out before the Pajero. As an off reader, I am indebted to it for getting me home each time. I have a petrol model and it does get a bit thirsty but it has plenty of get up and go. These are reliable vehicles.

Any issues I should be looking out for when buying second hand?
@OnTheDirt
@OnTheDirt 5 жыл бұрын
Leave a comment with issues to look out for when buying a 2nd hand Pajero. One issue with the Pajero when used off-road all the time is the overflow pipe for the condenser on the air-conditioning. It normally drains into the engine bay, but after a lot of dusty roads, it often blocks up with dirt. It then overflows onto the passenger floor leaving you with wet carpet. It’s relatively easy to unblock the pipe, but almost impossible to do with a hot engine. So look out for mouldy carpet on the passenger side!

@@OnTheDirt I think that dual cab 4WD utes are very popular at the moment; Even more so on the second hand market (I have been looking for a while now). I think D22 Navara, D40 Navara, PJ/PK ranger, RC Colorado and maybe even an Amarok would be great reviews. They are very popular and very affordable (under 10 years old too). GU Patrol would get lots of views; Very popular. Even models left of field like the older SN413 Jimny (hot topic at the moment with the release of the new model), Land Rover Defender or Jeep Wrangler even.

I've got the 3.5L 02 NM. Love the vehicle on and off road. I average between 13 & 14L/100km mostly around town which I hear is quite good for the motor. They are a superb vehicle for daily driving and a lot of fun off road while being very capable. The Independent suspension all round allows for better clearance as you don't have the diff pumpkin hanging lower.

I have a second hand 06', 3.8L petrol and I've been using it for 8 years now. It is a great car for daily drive, hard paths or long trips, but it ¡s quite thirsty: 5km/L in city or offroad, 10km/L on highway; 7km/L. The good thing is that it can takes a lot of abuse with low maintenance, parts and manuals are available online. I haven't visited a mechanic since I bought it.

I had a 2004 3.2L auto Paj for 10 years. Inability to turn off traction control had the car braking itself at the worst times, whenever the tyres spun. Lots of bad bogs on soft beaches and overheating brakes. On rocks the system was good. Injector pumps for the diesel are a problem too, and extremely expensive. If buying a 3rd gen Paj I'd go petrol. I 'downgraded' to a 2nd gen with the solid rear axel. Barebone electrics. Love it to bits. I've taken the 2.8 manual many places she shouldn't have and back again.

Fantastic review! We currently have a 2005 Diesel Paj that we have taken to Birdsville, Innamincka, Moreton Island (3 times) and Fraser Island (4 times) and Airforce Beach between Evans Head and Ballina countless times. The Paj has never given an ounce of trouble and we swear by the Paj. Compared to our previous Nissan Pathfinder that we constant issues with as long as the Paj is serviced every 10,000K's it does not stop. The only offroad strife we have had was on a very hot day in Jan 2019 (no recent rain and very soft sand) trying to get from North to South on Ngala rocks on Fraser. Despite 5 attempts simply could not get through. Although ended up going over the rocks to get back South which a lot of other 4wds would not have accomplished due to the steep climb. Completely concur with the comments from On The Dirt. Keep an eye on the overflow pipe. We have found that providing you put a coat hanger up the pipe after each beach trip nil issues. Again, great reviews On The Dirt. Please keep them coming!

I just bought an NP 3.5 petrol Commonwealth Games edition to replace my NM caught up in the Takata airbag recall. Nice car, and drives very well, but he's right, it is quite thirsty. I think I will be getting high teens per 100k around town, but I'm still testing. Fortunately I don't use it as a commuter, only weekends to tow the boat or camping trips, so overall the fuel economy isn't a big issue.

Ive got an 02 NM GLX. Bottom of the line so no traction control, no dual zone air con etc. Its a 3.5L Petrol in Manual. I absolutle love the car. I paid $3500 needing a new clutch and some other minor repairs but for a car thats 17 years old with around 230,000 on the clock you expect some repairs. I do have a small lift in the rear but stock in the front, AT Tires on the front & Highways on the rear (soon changing to AT all round) this car has done me very well and gotten me through places Patrols with lift and 31' tires have been stuck. They are a great car to drive and I get around 12-13L/100km out of mine.

@@OnTheDirt I'm rather shocked to see the fuel so low too. I admit I don't drive with as much of a heavy foot as I used to and I often sit a gear up to what I would otherwise such as 5th gear at 60-70kmh rather than 80kmh but sin e having the car I have actually send the usage drop quite a bit and that may be due to my driving style. Personally I don't think they need any more. I often head out with a mate in a fully stock NM Exceed and we have a great time. I was unaware of the lift in the rear of mine until I measured it against my mates. I thought it was stock all around. The NM GLX also has no lockers or anything just the standard drive. It goes anywhere any other stock 4x4 will go and in some places other slightly modified will go. It does depend on the driver obviously but as a first time 4x4 owner I would not trade it for a Landcruiser or Patrol

I have one, it's a great car! Would be good to check the 4wd system, specifically the valves that are on the engine bay (near the air filter in de LHD model), and/or the actuator (engaging system) in the front diff. At least where I live (Bolivia), almost every single Pajero (2nd, 3rd and even 4th gen) have issues with the 4wd not disengaging, leading to an orange light flashing in the dash... Hope it helps somebody...
@OnTheDirt
@OnTheDirt 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, this can be a problem on the Mitsubishi's across the range and is not just limited to the Pajero. We had a Triton that had these issues, and because it is a vacuum actuator, it can sometimes be as simple as replacing a very inexpensive hose that is cracked or broken. It can also get full of dirt and dust, so it might just be jamming and need a clean. We had one jamming, and after crossing about 12 river crossing it started working again!
@mohamedgaaloul2753
@mohamedgaaloul2753 2 жыл бұрын
@@OnTheDirt But the good news are as the following: if the 4WD control system fails (selenoid valves, hoses, switches...) the 4 wheel system still engage normally and you will not be stucking in mud or sand for ex. Simply because the vacuum system is responsible for disengaging the front differential not the opposit and if it fails the front differential will be engaged all the time.

I have a 2003 np with still only 135.000 km on the clock.It has the 3.8 litre motor which is super reliable and fuss free. Sure it uses probably 35% more fuel than the diesel but it is so much more reliable. The V6 petrols in these Pajeros are a bit thirsty but require much less maintenance. They are also much cheaper to buy than the diesels not to mention quieter. The only problem with the 3.8 litre motor is no one can fit me a snorkel on it. Anyone out there know how to fit a snorkel to the 3.8? Cheers Matt.
@yutuniopati

Why would it harder to fit a snorkel on a 3.8l than on a 3.2 disel ?? The air intake are not that much different.

Price comfort reliability and overall durability I love our 2005 Exceed,however sadly judged due to the 4x4 community has a real “Badge” issue. If you’re not in $125,000 debt for your vehicle than it’s not a 4x4 apparently.
