This thing made American, British & Russian tanks into tin cans. Scary weapon and easy to conceal in woodland. I bet every allied tank crewman had nightmares about this beast!

IS-2 and M26: Are you sure about that Before you guys start complaining that those were late war tanks and the Germans would have fielded more powerful guns to counter them, I just want to emphasise that not all allied tanks are vulnerable to the Pak 40.
@klauskeller63802 жыл бұрын
@@arandomfinnin1941 according to wikipedia, the pak 40 could penetrate armor of up to 176mm. Neither th IS-2 nor the Pershing had that much armor. So no: Every allied tank was vulnerable to the Pak 40 especially in Ambushes. Everything depends on the combat environment and the men commanding and using the gear.

@@arandomfinnin1941 lol, seriously?? Just the opposite is true my friend... EVERY Allied tank was capable of being knocked out by the potent and terrifying Pak 40. The OP was absolutely correct... this weapon sent shivers down Allied tankers spines. These anti-tank guns could be anywhere... behind a hedgerow, inside a barn, hidden in a snowbank... anywhere. One account I read written by a WW2 American tanker... he wrote about a round from a Pak 40 going through one Sherman, out the other side and destroying another Sherman some 60yds away! 🇺🇸 🍻
@arandomfinnin1941 Жыл бұрын
@@jerryjeromehawkins1712 The 176mm max penetration figure stated by the guy above you is outdated, cuz when I checked it, the Pak 40 will penetrate 132mm with the standard PzGr 39 APCBC round, and 154mm with the tungsten cored PzGr 40 APCR round, both at 0° and 500m. So yes, in other words, the Pak 40 will punch right through MOST, not ALL, Allied tanks. Sorry to disappoint you, but the assertion by some that a Pak 40 will penetrate any Allied tank anywhere in any circumstance is simply not true. The aforementioned IS-2 had an upgraded model in 1944, which saw the upper frontal hull armor increased to 120mm sloped at 60°, and thus the effective thickness went well over 200mm; The M4A3E2 Jumbo and the Churchill VII also had effective frontal hull armor exceeding 150mm. So, under normal combat circumstances, a Pak 40 will not frontally penetrate any of those things ANYWHERE. But yes, that doesn't mean they are completely invulnerable, as in an ambush situation a Pak 40 will still knock them out easily if it gets a flank or rear shot, in fact even the smaller 5 cm Pak 38 is capable of doing that as well. Hence as the guy above you said, it all depends on the combat situation, how professional the crews on both sides are, and a bit of luck. Also, paper statistics don't take into consideration the quality of the armor and the ammunition. For the Germans, the production qualities of both weapons and ammunition became worse and worse as the war raged on, and for the Allies, the opposite. So a PzGr 39 round from a Pak 40 that is expected to penetrate 132mm of armor might do worse than that, and a M26's frontal armor that is expected to stop rounds with ~130mm penetration might do better than that. The same thing goes with the crew. No matter how powerful your gun is, if the crew doesn't even know when, where and how to shoot, there is no point, even under the best circumstances. You see a Sherman turning around a corner and pushes the trigger, all you hear is a loud clang, and the next thing you know the Sherman lobs a 76mm WP round straight into the building you are hiding in (Totally not a Fury reference), if only you had waited for the Sherman to turn fully, you would not have bounced and gotten your entire crew killed. Such situations became more and more common as the number of experienced anti tank gun crews in the Wehrmacht dwindled, and training of new ones became more and more rushed. So yes, all Allied tanks are vulnerable to the Pak 40, but some are only vulnerable under the most favorable conditions, and there is a ton of other factors to be taken into account.
