You come in union with the divine by maintaining certain processes or anusthanas....like keeping fast, chanting, meditating, visiting consecrated places, receiving blessings of the divine and guidance of the elevated gurus inorder to purify yourself or come into a state of being to attend/perform rituals in the pran pratistha on 22nd.... shedding off your identities is a basic thing to do, infact the first thing they do to establish connection of the divine....

Shri Ram was not SACRIFICING, Shri Ram was following his DHARMA. 1) He respected his father's decision/ situation 2) He fought a fierce battle to save his wife 3) He upholded raja Dharma over self as a true leader to protect the integrity and wellbeing of the people. Anushthan is a promise you make to yourself and follow it strictly keeping God as a witness for a Certain cause or begetting certain blessing for a said no of days. The promise made is a very satvic promise and there r rules which you have to follow according to Vedic rituals. Promise could be anything from just praying or doing jap x no of times in the day or keeping upvas or abstaining of certain foods or foregoing of certain comforts like sleeping on floor instead of bed or performing certain type of pooja or doing certain type of yogic practices. It's a promise u keep by which u become purified and by the end of the anushthan you r blessed with whatever u asked or did the anushthan for. It's somewhat like a promise you keep during Ramazan month.
