Pakistan's Weapon Imports from China Amplifying Economic Crisis? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Islamabad has announced a $86 Million grant for Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, amid protests in the region against high electricity prices. But can Pakistan afford the grant? Pakistan is mired in debt, with 42% of it being external debt. Islamabad owes foreign nations and institutions about $125 Billion. The lion's share of Pakistan's debt is owed to China. Islamabad pays China back both directly and indirectly. Direct loan repayments are supplemented with arms purchases. 82% of Pakistan's defence imports between 2019 and 2023 were from China. This includes big ticket items like submarines worth $4-5 billion, which Pakistan cannot afford amidst its economic crisis.
