We Found a HELL PIG! Our RAREST Fossil Find Ever! | Florida Entelodont (Daeodon/Dinohyus)

This was one of our rarest finds of all time! An incredibly rare Arikareean HELL PIG (entelodont) from the Late Oligocene/Early Miocene of Florida, along with a bunch of rhino material. Terrestrial fossils from this time period are incredibly rare from Florida, with only a handful of sites ever found. This site has the potential to help teach all of us more about the prehistoric life who called this place home.
As special as the fossil finds in this adventure are, it is still only one part of what makes days like this special to us. We are naturalists and fossils are only one part of the way we experience, enjoy and study nature while we are outside. We also smell it, taste it, listen to it and touch it, the way humans have done for hundreds of thousands of years. Doing this causes us to slow down and really appreciate everything around us. It's amazing how much you actually miss if you're in too much of a hurry in adventures like this, or in any other part of life. It is important to slow down, as often as possible.
In any case, we can't wait to get back out to this location and uncover more mysteries that it holds! We have clearly only scratched the surface of this location, and we are convinced that it may tell us much more if we continue to study it. Expect this to be part of a series on this location/site. Hell Pig Creek!

Thank you for contacting UF. That is an Entelodont canine. That site needs a paleontological field evaluation. Places like this must be protected and curated for the public trust. You are a true custodian of our natural history, thank you. I have never seen a Cyprus tree that wide in Florida, I thought most of them were cut down.

I have a simple question: How many times have you been able to donate finds to the Florida Museum of Natural History? I've been sub'd for a while now (and recently to Bri's ... I feel ashamed that it's so recent, having tried to remind myself to do so for as long as I've been sub'd here - I truly enjoy and respect Bri's art / sculptures, and photography ... I just get lost in the art, and forget ... love it! [very jealous of your talent, young lady]), and I've noticed that on a few occasions you've mentioned that what you've found is 'rare' or at least not 'found' in quite some time. And if possible, any updates you get from them, if you can share with us - your couch-participants.

I applaud your dedication, your consciousness and your joy. I, too, donated my collection of over 150 fossilised fish skulls, bird and reptile bones, hundreds of crustaceans (crabs / lobsters) and shark teeth, collected over years from the Eocene London Clay to the Lapworth Museum, University of Birmingham, UK. I found an incredibly rare Hyracotherium jaw, a new species of Eocene crab, Cretaceous chalk ammonites, eel skulls, all now in the British Natural History Museum. Most amazingly, a 450,000 year old flint, post-Anglian Ice Age, "Clactonian" hand axe made by Homo heidelbergensis in my back garden, now in the British Museum. It's where such finds all properly belong. It's humanity's heritage for everyone, not my treasure to gloat over. I just love what you are doing. ATB.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say people’s finds belong in a cardboard box in the basement of a museum(which, like it or not, is where 99.9 percent of donated stuff will go) instead of where they can enjoy them.

As a geologist with a passion for paleontology I must say your video was so impressive. Beautifully done. Your attitude towards collecting and submitting important finds to professionals both inside and outside of a academia is noteworthy and to be highly respected. I appreciate your excitement as I too have stumbled upon amazing ice age mammals in northern most Alaska and even more rare upper Cretaceous dinosaur material from deeper horizons at the same location. It definitely gets the heart pumping with joy and excitement. Keep up the excellent work.

Hope you come up with new projects more often. And as for the wild orchids, I'm curious about them. I would love to see wild orchids. I appreciate your zest for learning and knowing... formal school is useful for some things, but true learning really happens when you seek it out, when you make an effort to know something you didn't know before, even if it costs you (not just monetarily but in physical effort or taking the time to learn so that you know what you're looking at when you're out pursuing knowledge). I can feel how enthusiastic you two are when you're out on a hunt, and it makes me feel excited too. Thank you for taking the time to share your expeditions with us.

Thanks for the very nice comment. I am a huge proponent of lifelong learning. Everybody should find something they find interesting, and explore it to the extent that they can. The both of you need to keep exploring, adventuring and foraging. Do it all and know this guy is along for the ride. Can't wait to see what you've got coming next. Chris, you and Kyle got me into this mess a few years ago and now with the inclusion of your ladies, Bree and Natalie, you've got a great team of folks doing the good things that make the future look better. Keep on keeping on.

Life is all about learning. What blessing to have folks like the two you and so many others to look for it. It's so much fun being able to go along with your adventures. Thx and big hugs from right outside of Washington DC.

This was absolutely amazing!!! And so exciting to find such a rare fossil! Your philosophy about fossils is great, and congratulations for your donation to the museum. Please continue doing these in depth videos, and ones on the flora you find on your explorations. I enjoy it all. I've been watching your KZfaq videos for a while, but this is the first time I've commented. The whole thing along with the explanation of your philosophy has brought tears to my eyes. I grew up in South Dakota and was able to collect Eocene fossils from the Badlands formation with my high school earth science class. We also had petrified wood and belemnites on the ranch where I grew up. Now I live in Indiana, and we can collect Devonian fossils here... Brachiopods , horn coral, and others. Still hoping to find a trilobite in these formations! Keep up everything you are doing! It's wonderful viewing, and helps keep me inspired to get out and hunt, even though I'm 76 years young!

Wow, what an amazing adventure; thanks for taking us along! And no more staying gone so long… the infectious enthusiasm you two exude is a salve for the soul, and it’s sorely missed when you go AWOL! (Side note: I also loved the little detour into your garden, and would really dig seeing more of the homesteading/fishing/foraging content too.)

This is a fantastic video but the last 15 minutes were the perfect end to it. It was awesome meeting you two at the museum dig site the other week. Did you see Bri's horse jaw after prepped? They put a picture on FB and it was beautiful! Hope to cross paths again and the offer to go herping always stands! Also, Bri's drawings are amazing, she should commission paleotattoos for shops to ink.
