Really great video, Rick! Ewan Fordyce, who the large penguin was named after in their species name actually passed away in November of this year. I met him only briefly, and his passing was both saddening and surprising. His legacy will carry on from all the students he helped train, and all the specimens he described and discovered. :)

16:05 If we used this type of measurement on Megalodon then wouldn’t that dramatically decrease the total length or mass of the creature? Feel free to correct me as it just got to my head

I don't think that technique of measuring applies to Megalodon because we don't have a complete skull. The only things we have are the jaws and teeth. The size was estimated by looking at the tooth to body size ratio of Great White Sharks and applying that to Megalodon teeth.

We have no clue where exactly the orbits and gills of megalodon were. So the technique is useless.

A little paleontology question I just had: with the most recent iteration of the trex, wouldn’t it not be able to balance with how it’s designed? Because it looks like it’s tail is not long enough to support the weight of its head and body, if anyone could clarify this that would be very helpful.

I refuse to believe therizinosaurus claws were for just display, its just utterly unreasonable, they are hard structures, and unlike antlers, they most definitely were not shed. It simply is waaay too much investment into a nothing trait.

Feathers are very rare to be preserved, it's very likely that they did have long display feathers on their arms in addition to their long claws, but only the claws got fossilized.

Haber. Las garras de Thery no eran de adamantio pero tampoco de cristal y es más. Los Therys poseían mucha fuerza en los brazos indicando hací que los utilizaba para algo. En el tema de la alimentación podían haberle servido pará alcanzar alguna hoja que se le escapase (no hacé falta romper la rama) y en el tema de la defensa hubieran sido principalmente disuasorias pero si el depredador sigue insistiendo pués se podría llevar una ostia muy dolorosa para hací alejarlo. Pero si aún con ésas sigue pués hay el Thery se defenderá pegándole empujones, embestidas y alguna hostia que pueda.

What you just said is a logical fallacy. Unlike with Therizinosaurus, there is actual evidence of Stegosaurus using its thagomizer as a weapon. There are bones of Allosaurus that have holes in them that match the size of a Stegosaurus's thagomizer.

I still think they messed up with therizinosaurus claws if they can change Spinosaurus swim or not stuff also how would it even defend it’s self from tarbosaurus can’t run and no armor or maybe the claw sheet absorbed the stress to the claw because saying the claws are only for display just doesn’t sit right

@@MichealFelk giraffe necks are muscular and they technically don't use their necks but their tiny Horns they have wich therizinosaurs don't have and their necks also aren't pretty muscular based on their anatomy and they also have relatively weaker neckbones than a giraffe and that also seems to be a stupid strategy against a similar sized carnivore who would aim for the neck

If it was true that Theri's claws were weak, then perhaps they could of also aided in "these aren't actually dangerous, but they look hella dangerous and just imagine if these went up you ass." Sort of deal. However, I do find it bizarre to believe that they were physically useless. If they were just decore, what would be the evolutionary point for it to look dangerous but isn't? I think the most likely scenario would be they could've been used to harm smaller threats in some way, display, tearing leaves off tall branched, bring tall or far away branches closer, like an all of the above. But if they were completely useless, my best explanation would be that due to it's evolution of a longer neck, large size, etc, over time the need for claws became less of an evolutionary priority. Perhaps of they weren't cut "short", It's evolutionary line would've eventually cut all ties with the Freddy Krueger claws.

Late but have you seen Rick's review of prehistoric planet? His point with carnotaurus is that what may seem silly to a human likely wouldn't be for many other species. The opposite likely goes too. I mean, bighorn sheep have mean looking bashers on their heads but are horrendous at using them on anything other than competing males. Even then, the sheep at least have structurally sound features, while theri's claws would break even if it got a swipe off. Sure it could probably fight off relatively small threats with them, but that goes for basically every dinosaur excluding derived tyrannosaurines and abeliosaurs.

We're saying that because fossilization is so rare, only animals with high populations are likely to have some individuals that end up fossilized. If theri couldn't defend, run, or hide from predators like tarbosaurus at all, how did it fossilize?

@@lectroeel6290 Environment or some other thing. Take porcupines/skunks and caprines (goats) as examples. None are especially good at outrunning predators. Porcupines and skunks defend themselves with weapons that wouldn't ever fossilize, while goats stay on cliffs to incur the risk of a carnivore falling to its death. Not saying that therizinosaurus had anything specifically, but the science says that its claws can't be used to fight. To me at least, it makes more sense to speculate about things that there is no evidence for than to think about a theory that has been rigorously disproven.

@@geoffzuo9831 it hasn't been rigorously disproven. Almost nothing in paleontology is set in stone. Have you seen the newest papers for example? They are arguing in favor of nanotyrannus being a valid genus and have some evidence. What you brought up is plausible, but I still doubt they were completely useless.

I still believe that therizinosaurus was able to use its claws for defense or intimidation. Otherwise it would have been fodder for animals like tarbosaurus, and not have succeeded in its environment. Because fossilization is so rare, an animal that isn't successful is less likely to have any individuals that fossilized. Paleontology is constantly changing, and this study itself may be disproved in the future.

The therizinosaurus claws only being for display is kinda strange. Why evolve these giant expensive claw that are just there. If it can't evens use it for tool usage you'd think the claws would atleast be for foraging. I not exactly convinced

I mean you'd be amazed what animals evolve in order to get laid. Modern Slider Turtle males evolved similarly large claws for the exact same purpose.

@@seandewar47 yes, but usually the display is colorful or grand obviously we can't tell from the bone but these traits are male specific, we haven't found any female theri claws yet. Also testing stress with bones is always iffy, what if the claws were thicker or muscle was attached?

Wait, the example for the formula has the appearances of the fish ignored the nuances. Those short faced fishes have a top water jaw build, meaning facing upwards, this is the weakest point. However, from what is seen, those examples, including the not included like piranha and pacu are sleek and thin widewise. Whilst the dunkleosteus have far ticker girth akin of those boa and python like build (or eel-like, if you will). There should be a new estimation based on the eye to snout distance with the nuances of the thickness and width of the fish as that Nuances are ignored, and eels seems generally to have a thicker girth, lengthy body with shorter ratio from eyes to snout. I hope this doesn't go like the spinosaurus aquatic or semi aquatic shenanigans last time.

Therizinosaurus still has very powerful arms and shoulders, so it possibly could have wrestled predators away

⁠@@Spinofaarus_boi theri at smallest size estimates is 1.5 tons smaller than tarbo at lowest estimates and they were the same size at max estimates (5 tons). And in that theri’s neck was quite vulnerable and that tyrannosaurs were more agile than theropods of the same size and that the encounter would most likely be tarbo ambushing theri, doesn’t make for a good combo for the Freddy Krueger chicken.

Therizinosaurus's claws are longer, less sharply curved, and more laterally flattened than any of its relatives. Although their shape matches a real scythe blade, bone is more brittle and less flexible than steel. Display is the only viable option. The body-shape used for the new Dunkleosteus looks ungainly and not something a top predator would have.
