Pallet projects are awesome, one of my problems when I work with pallet wood during a pallet project is that you mostly get very nice but thin boards. For some pallet projects I need things that are a bit more beefy. In this particular case while I went a bit too thick you can clearly see that the experiment is a success.
You need thicker or better pallet wood for your pallet wood projects? In this case consider this technique where I create a pallet wood beam. This pallet project is very simpler and straightforward, you'll make using recycled wood a better option for your next pallet project.

What's next for the laminated beam?
@MichaelLawing
@MichaelLawing 7 жыл бұрын
Laminated in the sense that this is multiple layers stacked and glued together, not that it was made of laminant boards or anything.

pas de problème! It would have been confusing enough without having to translate!

I really like this method. Just a tip: you should never use gloves, long sleeves, or shirt tails while using jointers, table saws, and other power equipment. They can get caught and pull you into the saw. Glad to see you use a push stick, though...

Very clever idea! Although you need a better glue distribution system - maybe a roller bottle? Planks should be buttered with glue evenly, given the waviness of boards, it would eliminate air pockets which could lead to separation later. If there was a nail left embedded in the wood, what would happen to your table saw? Is there a way to cut wood with nails on a table saw, other than Sawzall?

Hey there. I'm seriously considering building a 6'x6' shed using beams similar to the one you made here in a Lincoln Log type of design. In order to achieve the length I would have to glue a few boards end to end, then ensure the boards above and below are glued end to end at offset points. This will be housing a zero ground emission composting toilet in Northern Wisconsin. My concern with laminating the pallet wood is that the glue may give out in temperatures ranging from -25 to 80 throughout the year. I considered using anodized screws going through the depth of the beams to help hold them together and give them strength. I'd be interested to know your thoughts and also if you have exposed this beam to the elements and how well it held up. Thanks.

My garage is not heated and I live in Canada/Quebec Temp here drop to -40 (f or c makes no difference at this point) I have not seen wood glue lose bond yet for my projects that remain in the garage all year round I have seen non wood glue such as polyurethane glue become very brittle. I would could test it and release data next year... I'm very curious now as I'm considering the same to do a new section in the garage. It's April as I read this and would not see results for at least 12 months

Curious to know if you ever did this but if you havent here's my two cents. Use a polyurethane based wood glue, as it works well for outside in cold areas. Also if you plan to make a beam like in the video thats gonna be longer and support a little bit of weight i would use the same technique the use in brick laying and use a running bond pattern to lay the beam together. Id also drill some holes through and glue some dowel rods through the middle for extra security. Still curious as to whether this was done in the last two years or not though.

Really cool way to re-use scrap wood. I’m curious though, how does the structural integrity compare to a solid beam? Could you theoretically build something like a house out of glulam beams like this?
@TheWoodenRider

I’m sure you could, but I’ve never tried it - perhaps some R&D would be quite interesting Thanks for the idea

So, there really is no need to plane/joint or prep the pallet slats at all before glue-up? I was thinking of turning my pallets into 4x4 (ish) laminate to build a structural piece, but thought I'd have to make sure everything was parallel/flat/straight before laminating
@TheWoodenRider
@TheWoodenRider 3 жыл бұрын
The video did not show that part, yes you should absolutely flatten (plane) prior to glue up. You can joint afterwards as I did
@SurreptitiousBean
@SurreptitiousBean 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheWoodenRider Oh okay. I guess looking closer I can see they were planned. They appeared to not be perfectly flat in the beginning, so I thought they were just sanded. I don't have a planer so I was hoping to just glue them up (relying on clamping to force out any bowing) and joint them using a table saw. Do you think that would work, or should I definitely try to find/buy/borrow a planer or jointer?
@TheWoodenRider
@TheWoodenRider 3 жыл бұрын
Or put them on the side on a table saw and make them flat that way. It’s critical to have two surfaces with maximum contact. It could work if you don’t but you won’t get as good of a bond. I found out the hard way when I put such a glue up on a wood lathe. Cost me a tripod, a ceiling lightbulb and a pair of underwear.

I heard recently that it takes 53 acres of forest to construct an average home in the U.S., which is horrifying. Any way to create beams out of pallet wood that are long enough and sturdy enough to act as load-bearing uprights for a house?

Besides all that, what I should have told you is, your video is awesome! Taking scrap wood - even CRAP wood to some - and making a solid beam out of it is awesome! AND, as it turns out, I have the same portable table you have! That is a smart little piece of machinery. The best part of it is its mobility. I suppose I wouldn't have it if I were a professional carpenter or something, but it does every I need! Great minds, huh? HAHA! All my best!

Paul Gaddey - What did you not get? He transformed planks into a block of wood. Now you can lathe it, carve it, make a beam of it, and not spend on a huge block of wood at the store. Plus, you recycle wood. Energy and materials saved. Its clear as a bell.
