One quick little 'cheat' to make getting all the metal off the magnet easier... slip a sandwich baggie over the magnet before you start. Then when you're done, just peel it off, and the metal will come right off with it.

Use pallet buster to lift wood then go through pallet with reciprocating saw..Keeping nail heads in gives a perfect rustic look.Very few of my customers want the nails completely removed. Still an enjoyable video and you stress the importance of wearing safety glasses which is a MUST!!!! Greetings from murky dark damp eastern England.

It's some annoying little pieces too if your pallet used that nail style.

There are small, not expensive gadgets available that you quickly run over a piece of wood. If there is a piece of nail, screw or whatever in the wood it will bleep. They can be viewed on the WWW. Ideal for those who use pallet wood.

I would add one tip: work both of the outside stringers before you pry the center ones. This will keep the louse end from swinging up and you won't get as many bent nails on that last pry.

Very nice, never would have known about the type of nails that leave the back spikes until it was too late. I put my magnet in a small plastic bucket, then you just need to lift it out of the bucket and the metal drops off, no picking them one-by-one or getting shavings poking through my gloves.

I use recycled pallets for making Garden furniture and planters and even handrails. I don't bother with planning or sanding but I do paint them with garden fence paint because it hides the dirt and discolouration of used pallets. I'm wondering why companies stopped having them returned but it could be due to the new hazardous chemical you talk about.

I only work with recycled wood. Mostly pallet wood and I have two tools that I use to remove the nails. first I use a nail punch and the nails are pulled using a Blacksmith tongs to pull the nails. I have asked Santa for a Pallet Buster, But I will have to special order it and that will have to wait until after the Holidays are over. Because I live on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Thank you. You made it look easy. I plan to build a garden shed & chicken coop from reclaimed pallet lumber I’m going to use an old time radial arm saw with the power head vertical and a carbide rotary planer. I hope I have no problems with the occasional nail. Also, thinking about making parquet flooring from the nicer boards. Anyway. Thanks again.

I've found what metal swuff that's left behind won't harm any cutting blade it's brocken off nails that do the damage the main course of this is not removing then straight away , my reason for telling you this as most other materials ie manmade boards have metal particles inbeded within them and this takes along time to dull a blade or cutter!

Nice laying the pallet wood back down and using the remaining pallet to knock the nails through , I learnt something 2 day hello from down under. New sub here pallet wood = Free wood , I only use HT ( heat treated) pallets have seen people use treated pallets that contain lots of nasties.

I don’t know where you live, i.e. urban or rural, but you might consider making a variety of bird houses for your garden, your friends gardens and for the schools in your area. The teachers usually make an ecology lesson around it and the children love it. Here in the UK we have a serious problem with a decling European hedgehog population, so many people make homes for them. But that might not apply to you. If you have children who are old enough get them to help you. Directions for birds and hedgehogs are on the WWW.

I was shown that you bang each corner of the pallet by lifting it it and just hit the floor with a corner, . This loosens the nails and makes them easier to remove the nails.

Those barbed ones are the bane of my existence lol. Literally every single pallet in my neck of the woods is held together with nothing but those buggers. I gave up digging them out and just zip the boards off the stretcher with a saw. If I need longer boards, I just shiplap and glue two butts together.

I just use a 5/8 hole bit after removing the auger bit. Use another board with a hole already drilled for a guide (since the bit will slip). Then plug all the holes with a 5/8 dowell.

No joiner. No problem. Take 5 boards that u trim on ur table saw to the same width. Use 2 squares to make sure they are square while clamping at the ends. Now run them through ur planer together as a solid board. planer.
