Probably a burial axe heads were highly prized and would be very valuable. I would excavate the whole area.

Here in Ohio a hole that deep will almost always produce an aluminum can. You are to be commended for hanging in there and pursuing the target. You didn't let the broken farm implement thought make you start pushing dirt back in and moving on. Super find and an excellent short video documentation. Congratulations!

Another Ohio guy here. I sometimes dig copper nodes, big chunks of copper, real deep when detecting. When I get a big signal deep I go until I find it but like you said it's usually a pop can. Happy hunting to all. Great video.

My God, man... I’m an arborist by trade and I have a pretty substantial axe collection - and with Scottish blood I would be beyond floored to add something like that to my collection. If I’d found three I’d film myself finding two and one might “disappear” 🤷‍♂️. Incredible finds, man. That is once in a lifetime stuff right there!

To buff one of these back up to its original bronze patina, fit a shaft on it and put it in the hands of a competent axe wielder would be interesting!

@@andrewtrip8617 Yeah, I’m sure you’re right about that. I harvest my firewood from the middle of the woods sometimes, and when I split by hand I always go for a dull 8 pound maul. I probably have 50+ axes, Pulaski’s, hatchets etc. and my default go-to is always a standard splitting maul. I bet your cast replica would probably do pretty well with kindling,

Hi Part of the reason that it takes long before you get answers from Ministerium, could be thet they get a lot more in. In Denmark it is more than 10 bigger than 5 years agoe because of more metal detectors on the ground. Thet dont get more people to manage it.

@@StuartWoolger i think theres likely something alot closer, those axes look like a votive offering, so would often be at a site like a sacred spring, a barrow, a burial or perhaps something else similar. Divvy detectorists channel found an axe hoard, and there was also alot of roman broaches, coins, a gold stator blank, and when i asked if theres a spring close, he said theres 5 in that same field. So id be looking around that area for other stuff that could be relavent.

I'll head back up there in the spring and after lockdown, it's quite a remote spot, but definately worth another visit.

I haven't got a definative answer to that Philby, but I'm sure I read they were the swiss army knife of their time, used for clearing undergrowth for planting crops, digging and clubbing the enemy if need be!! Hopefully someone might have a more scientific answer!!

So what happened to them, after you dug them up??
@StuartWoolger
@StuartWoolger 3 жыл бұрын
They've been handed in to our regional Finds Liaison Officer FLO. I doubt I'll hear anything for a few years, the service is backlogged. I have three other treasure finds submitted, one I've been waiting over two years to hear back from.

@@StuartWoolger So you take all the time and trouble to dig them up, and they hide them away again in some archaeology lab?? Do you get paid for them, or at least get your name recognized for it??

@@chancethompson8686 if the local museum decides they want them I will get half their value and the land owner will get half. The value is determined by a government valuation committee at the British Museum in London. If no one wants them myself and the landowner decide what we should do with them.

What’s the value of one of those?
@StuartWoolger

No idea cash wise Floyd, historical they have a massive value. A 3500 year old piece of history. The government will value them at some point.

Do you think they were buried as a ritual offering?
@StuartWoolger
@StuartWoolger 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure Boyd. Mine look like they were unused, so possibly buried soon after casting. They could of been buried by a travelling metal worker to use at a later date, or for safe keeping in troubled times, or maybe as an offering to the gods!

Do you know the value?
@StuartWoolger
@StuartWoolger 3 жыл бұрын
I don't Joseph, a valuation committee will decide on that, it's usually less than if they were sold at a private auction.
