Cross Stitch (Flosstube) #26 - Waste Knot Tutorial

This is a tutorial of how I have been using waste knots to start and finish a strand of floss from the front of my work. I have found this technique to be extremely helpful when working with only 1 strand of floss where starting with a loop method cannot be accomplished. I also find it more efficient then having to flip over my work to start a thread and end a thread by weaving it under my pre-existing stitches.
Carolyn Mazzeo also has a tutorial on using pin stitch for a similar purpose or for when you have a single stitch in an area on it`s own with nothing else to anchor it to.

I have been stitching for about 20 years and had never heard of this until I saw it in a Reddit cross stitch forum. I came here to see if someone could explain it better. Holy. Cow! My mind is blown! I am going to start using this method in my stitching TODAY! Thank you so much for the crystal clear explanation and demonstration.

Pam this is a great video. I had watched your video where you mentioned the waste knot but this video help me very much. I am now using this on a couple of my patterns where I don't want to run my thread through the back of the stitches - odd or even strands - this is a great way to either start and end or just end a thread. Thank you for taking the time to make this very good tutorial!

I did a page of my HAED on 25 count Lugana 2 over 1 full cross before giving up and restarting with 1 over 1. When I started watching this video I was only a few hundred stitches into it and using waste knots in column 2 to start and weaving under the back to end the thread. As I watched you most helpful video I literally changed how I started and ended on the fly. Thank you very much, I am so much happier now not having to keep flipping my work over and trying to weave under stitches.

Great tutorial video, Pam. Thanks for taking the time to make it. I started out doing needlepoint and the waste knot is how I was taught to start and end my thread. I carried that over when I started doing cross stitch and have used it for about 50 years. I was so excited when I started watching flosstube and saw the loop method. I use that way to start all even number threads, but still use the waste knot instead of flipping my work for odd threads.

Great video Pam! I love how secure those threads look, now they are woven under 20 or so stitches.... nothing's going to accidentally come undone from there! I too am struggling to weave my ending threads under my current HAED (28ct, 2 over 1) with so many confetti stitches. I must admit when I first researched Parking, most of the images I saw used the waste knot method - but i was still trying to get my head around mastering the Parking itself and dealing with the messy back. I didn't want to enhance the issue by having a messy front as well. Your video has now changed my mind... I'm going to give it a go this weekend.... wish me luck ;) Take care and happy stitching :) xx

Pam, thank you for this tutorial! It was driving me crazy to keep flipping over my giant HAED, especially as I accumulated more and more parked threads that would fall down every time. I am starting with the loop method with 2 over 1 basketweave tent stitch on 25 count, and I will definitely be stopping using waste knots going forward. You're awesome!

@PamsCraftyCorner
@PamsCraftyCorner 8 жыл бұрын
At the last column I will probably revert back to flipping my work to weave the floss ends in or you could waste knot to the side still if your threads were starting or ending on the far left of the column. That would still give you at least 8-10 stitches to cover them in on the back.

I was stitching my HAED while watching and surely turned over my back and loved your method. You gave very clear instructions, great teacher! I have to check to see if you have more tutorials. I clicked on ths video because I just discover this method and used it for one of my patterns. Glad I found it and this video. Did have a question, do you try to use this method now on any number of odd floss coverage? I assume you can... Or can you use column 3 for the loop method as if it was a waste knot and stitch in column 1 like normal...... this way I dont have to use the pin stitch or weave my thread at the end?
@PamsCraftyCorner
@PamsCraftyCorner 8 жыл бұрын
Yes you can use this method with any amount of strands. If you use the loop method to start you can use a waste knot to finish so there's no flipping your work at all.

+sylvia clayton you can park to the edge of the next block down or you can share your parked threads and waste knots. I tend to do that and don't find it to be too much of a hindrance.

I love this VIDEO! I was sitting working on HAED & I decided that I wanted to see if I just left the thread on top wrapped around my needle minder until it was time to cut might work? Do you think it might? Or is it absolutely neccessary to tie the knot so that it don't come loose?
@MissKitten422
@MissKitten422 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Pam, What do you do about the tiny tails on the back of your work that happen after you cut the waste knot off in the front? Don't the little tails have a tendency to get caught by your needle and come up through to the front?
@PamsCraftyCorner
@PamsCraftyCorner 8 жыл бұрын
+Cathy Hartley I don't find that they come up through as I usually stitch right up to one stitch or two away before cutting the knots. The tiny ends then just get stitched over with the next stitch.

Awesome tutorial, I have watched this several times as a reminder. I want to try this on my HAED. Have a question.... I will be using 2 threads and am wondering if I can start with the loop method in block 1, and then start stitching in block one, and then still end my threads with the waste knot in block 3. You may have talked about that and maybe I missed it.

Thanks - that was very informative. I have a question - what happens when column 1 becomes the last column of your work. Then if you start your waste knot in column 3, cross under column 2 and start working that last column (column 1) the threads won't be stitched over in column 2 as column 1 is your last column on the piece. Hope that made sense....

Once I reach my last column I either go back to flipping my work to weave the ends under the existing stitches to the left or I put waste knots below and stitch over the ends as I'm working down and just weave the ends in for the last two blocks. Hope that answers your question clearly.

I am going to try this. Looks doable. So after you snip off the waste knot, do you just leave the left over ends in the back?

+xx courtr5877 Yes by the time you complete the next stitches they will also be stitched over. I haven't had any issues with stray pieces poking out.

Love your videos! One question, which fabric pen do you use for gridding? I tried one and the lines came back after washing and drying. (tested a square without any stitches)

I know you usually don't grid, but maybe you know of one that works well. some gridding in this video..

+Marilou Dery Hi. Sorry I can't really be if much help. The gridding I did in this video was just for tutorial purposes and I've never used it on a piece I was stitching to frame. I don't know the brand but I purchased it at Michaels and the pen itself is blue with a white cap. It's water soluble and is supposed to wash out.

Is there a reason why you park your knot so far , could you put your knot in column 2 instead, or is it just to make sure its buried in there to be sure its not going to unravel? Can you use more than 1 strand of floss?

No. I just want to ensure they are well buried on the back. You can definitely use this technique with more then 1 strand of floss but usually if I use 2 strands I start with a loop start. No need for away knots.

just a tip , for those of you , who are thinking this technique is wasting thread/floss , you could do it with less stitches, then she shows OR look into anchoring floss with "Pin Stitch"

Thanks for the video - But you are wasting far too much thread - This method is not an efficient way of sewing......
