This video features several CSX locals a few road freights in the Portland Subdivision and Waterville Subdivision of the newly formed CSX New England Division.
Even after a good portion of the former Pan Am C40-8's went to G&W in their new Berkshire & Eastern operation on the west end (former Pan Am Southern), CSX still heavily relies on these aging locomotives to handle the long distance locals east of Lawrence.
December of 2023 was also a significant month in the progress of CSX rebuilding the former Pan Am territory as freights began running once again to Mattawamkeag, ME to interchange with Irving's New Brunswick Southern Railroad, and more direct and time/money saving optiom versus having CP technically backhaul the traffic all the way to Brownville Jct. before sending it east, or Irving haul the traffic all the way to Brownville Jct. before it goes west.
We will see a few of the locals operating between Hermon and Waterville in this video at the recently re-established 25mph speed limit, a major improvement from the long term speed restrictions plaguing this part of the main line during much of Pan Am, limiting trains to 10mph.
Also featuring recordings or two new CSX detectors installed in Pittsfield, ME and Carmel, ME.
