I have a 2021 PAm Special. After the starter clutch gear was replaced under warranty, the bike has been perfect. I have had no reliability issues. I will definitely be buying an extended warranty given all the electronics and how expensive parts and labour has become in case something serious goes wrong - but would apply to any brand.

I appreciate your honest assessment of the Pan America. I also considered getting one, but the reliability and some design flaws has me looking at the metric market. I am looking more toward a Suzuki 800DE or 1050. They have proven themselves to be reliable and bullet proof as well as having good aftermarket support and you can't beat the bang for the buck. You are absolutely correct when you say that you cannot afford to have an ADV go down in the middle of nowhere.

I traded in my 2022 KTM 890 adventure for a 2020 Suzuki V-strom 1050xt and I will NEVER look back. Constant issues with my 2022 ktm had the dealer buy back the motorcycle and give me the V-strom 1050xt and I have never been back to the dealer for any failures.

I actually ended up getting a late 2017 BMW R1200 GSA. The mileage was very low and it truly fit me well. I found the mid weights to be a little too small for my height and weight and would not do as well on longer trips. I also needed a shaft drive. I considered a Super 10 but found it to be top heavy. The BMW fits perfectly. @@stefanpuffer

It looks like a nice bike. I would not recommend it for international travel. I just rode from Alaska to Argentina, and did not see any dealerships outside of Mexico. I was on a GS 1250. 25,000 miles 14 countries no problems and there was several BMW dealerships.

i'm going for my 5k service on my 22 next weekend, i have had it for a year, been lucky so far and i've tried to have a positive attitude, its in my head, when is the right hand control gonna go out, when is the fuel pump gonna go lol but i freakin' love the bike, i want to get that exact same seat and i have looked at that gut guard and the black dog skid plate....unsure which one to get but after seeing your review i might go the the cameli put the green mosko bags on mine since its the GI model, i think it was the perfect match, i also added the wunderlich windshield brace with gps mount and bought the hot air deflector that HD came out with on the 23's, few minute job to put it on the 22....i got what i think was a deal on a 3yr extended warranty and jumper on it, which does great for piece of mind lol great review man sláinte!

Im at 3k with my new PA, and so far, so good. Only issue is with the blank screen startup and issues with the HD sport side cases. I haven't done much offroad but did to a 1k road trip on it. Next year i want to go on a few more long road trips (tail of the dragon, sturgis) and i think it will be good as long as I dont go remote backwoods. I want to remain somewhat near an HD dealer with my warrenty. I still need to get some upgrades, like the skid plate and seat.. but so far i'm loving the bike. I considered a street glide, and while that would have probably served me well.. I rarely pick the 'safe' choice. The PA is a conversation starter for sure and im just hoping we get more aftermarket love in the future. Enjoy the bike and ride safe.

Seems like a decent ride for being something new to HD. Document all the small issues, and get them addressed to HD, they will become more proactive with possible issues to look out for. Since it is a new platform for HD, provide as much information to HD to improve how the vehicle is serviced. Thanks for the input about the bike. Take care, ride safe.

Being a relative of the Davidsons, here in Scotland, my heart says buy one,my head says a Suzuki V-Strom 1050DE,both are the same money with a 1000 or so miles,Suzuki 2yrs newer MY...if HD would only do a more basic model, without the RHS switchgear, no phone connectivy ,etc, something a little less sensitive to a voltage drop...design wise,HD every time,i love the look, but Suzuki(and definitely not a Honda, due to their electrics)for long term owership?

Looks like an Awesome bike! Totally understandable that there are kinks to work out on a brand new platform. Id say for a from scratch entrance into new segment its a 110% win. By the design and engineering, we can clearly see Harley did their homework on what an ADV requires, and pretty sick they retained their style and class with it even

I'm kinda Harley biased, but, I'd stick to the Pan on valve-service alone. That whole strip the top of the bike and adjust the valves every 10 to 15,000 miles would get old pretty quick, for me. And, show me any other tech that in it's first 3 years that's had less bugs and fixes as it matured. As far as the motor and reliability...as much as Harley would like for you to believe this is a completely new engine engineered by Harley themselves, it's really just a reworked V-Rod motor (Porsche DNA), and to me that's a great thing...I put over 80,000 100% trouble-free miles on my VROD Muscle, and I abused the hell out of that bike...I wish I had the money back from all of the 240-section tires I burned off the back of that thing. How true the claim is, I have no idea, but I'm sure I read somewhere that the Pan is the top selling adventure bike in America...can't be all that bad. Totaled my off-road vehicle and nearly killed myself about a month ago, in the mountains, and I've been chomping at the bit to get it replaced, with the exact same machine. My wife told me I'm old and need to grow-up, and if I buy another side x side and kill myself, she won't visit my grave. I like visits, and so I think I may switch genres to the Pan...she digs bikes, even if I don't see her logic...I've been on Harleys for over 40 years, and in that time I've had at least a dozen near-misses, WITH her on the back, from tards in traffic...Anyway, it's possible I really DO need to calm down, and so maybe an adventure bike would force me to do that, while still being able to leave the asphalt.

I have a '21 Pan America. It's a great bike, but still has issues that Harley needs to work out. I have 25,000 miles on mine. I rode it solo to Dead Horse, Alaska from Southern California (9000 miles). I rode it to Sturgis this year (3500 miles), both trips with no problems. I rode it down Baja, Mexico and my stator failed and my battery died. I had to have it towed to the border and then shipped to a dealer. I plan to switch to a BMW GS Adventure for 2024. Would I buy a Pan America again. Absolutely, once Harley resolves the minor issues that are plaguing the bike.

I'm not of the of the Pan, but I'm not going to hate on it either. You bought what you thought you were going to enjoy. Every bike as it's Achilles heal and after a while you'll make mods that will make it more reliable. My only concern with modern bikes like this is all of the electronics which make the bike hard to work on if you break down and there's some sort of computer failure however, that can happen with any bike that's got EFI and today most do. If you're going to go on some far out adventure into the middle of no where then you shouldn't go alone anyway. I know that a lot of guys do, but it's always nice to have someone with you so that you can carry more tools than just a screwdriver and if you need to get towed out then someone is with you to do that. Enjoy the bike, customize it to your liking and find a good group of people to ride with. I'd love to take my KLR up to the Yukon. If you're cool with cruising at 70 then I'd be more than happy to go with you. I got tools :)

@@clayspence4160 33.4 on the Pan Am in the lowered/lowest position. 32.7 on the V85TT and you can remove the 12mm plugs under the seat to lower it a little more, they also offer a low seat option you can buy from MG.. That being said I did sit on a used PA the actually sat lower than the V85 according to my butt. This was after purchase, just window shopping. I don't know what was done to it aftermarket wise but I could reach comfortably. If the dealer would have had one set up similar when I was buying I might have gone that way. Let me tell you the most common story you will hear about a BMW. It’s all about the final drive failing. It’s a relatively short story because you won’t have to wait that long for it to happen and it’s going to happen when you are 300 miles away from a BMW dealership one week into your four week vacation. You’ll think this isn’t going to happen to me I’ll be one of the lucky ones. Don’t lie to yourself it’s going to happen to you. BMW has finally come out and just offered to replace the final dries every 35,000 miles. Fact check me on the number of miles. I could be wrong on that.. but it just goes to show. They’ve admitted that there’s a problem and they have no intention of fixing it. They’ll just keep replacing the drives. Do not reward them for their shitty behavior or it could be you who has to find someone to tow his bike 300 miles and then gets the bad news. It’ll be two weeks before they can replace the final drive.

There is a simple solution to ur reliability issue, buy a Yamaha Super Tenere! Also it’s shaft drive and 10k cheaper than PA.

I’ve ridden those twice I know they’re super reliable, but it just feels very dated to me. It needs to be upgraded and that may be a possibility in the future. Thanks for watching!

I would agree that HD did an excellent job on their first effort into ADV. However, if you don't trust to take on trips, it's nothing but a paper weight. I dumped HD 30+ years ago when I realized who they truly were. Multiple bailouts and woke ideology will keep me from ever buying another. We shouldn't support companies who hate us.

@@obriantomlinson2776 HD is more concerned with their ESG score than their customers. For there 120th anniversary they hired a band that openly hates America. The promote anti-American causes and are making more and more of their products in China, a country that wants to destroy the USA.

Yup, done with HD too. At least the Japanese don't sell out their stocks to foreign entities and investor groups. HD isn't American anymore. Obviously, the Japanese bikes aren't American either, but......the difference is.....the Japanese don't sway from their beliefs and business model. I respect that more than I respect a company who sold out, has all of their stuff produced overseas, and who's quality has plummeted. Still have a 2000 Heritage Springer, but it never ever gets ridden. I won't buy another HD ever. But I got a new Vstrom, and looking to get a dual sport here shortly too. Might wait a couple of years and get a new 450-500 Triumph dual sport

Agree that in the design aspect, they completely nailed it! It ends there for me. Knowing 2 people that own them, they are complete garbage. 1st one spent 6 months at the dealership. When he got it back, he had it for 2 weeks... then more problems. Harley ended up replacing the bike after having the bike at the shop 4 more times. He immediately traded it in for a tenure. He hasn't looked back... lemme know how that extended warranty works in the middle of nowhere 😂😂😂

Do yourself a favor, if your going off road, buy a Road King!

A Top-case off-road-bike rider wants to tell me something serious about reliability of a bike? LOL, just ridiculous. No Harley is not working on fixing the bike. The problems were obvious from the start and years later, not fixed! My HD dealer warned me from that bike, clearly and bluntly and I testrode it, it’s a piece of sheit. Yes the most basic things it does, when it rides it rides and you seat ok and the suspension is ok’is, all for a guided tiny-weeny-test-ride, so it means nothing that it worked, it’s obviously full of issues, still today, the recent model. So why buy it, why being blind and buy sheit even by HD terms? I’d rather use a road-king off-road, than this trash. I bet MV Agusta with the Enduro Veloce can make it worse, but while better looking.

@@3_AM Can't go wrong with the KLR. The Gen 3's have a better frame, better suspension and are fuel injected. I'm sticking with my 2017. It's got a carb on it and I like the simplicity. No fuel pump, no nothing.
