I love your work and your tutorial vids are so well done and informative. I've been noting down the papers you recommend, to add to my 'wishlist' of supplies. I'm currently using cheap, coloured papers I bought from the newsagents. I get some nice results, but now that I've been watching your vids, I know there's more suitable paper out there. Kind of like when I discovered that not all canvases are equal. Thanks! :)

@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt I'm on a pretty steep learning curve with pastels. And loving it. I've been using coloured pencils for decades, tho. Have you tried Derwent Coloursoft? They're lovely to work with. Cheers! :)

Very useful tips! I have a project, and I'm using Pastelmat, Panpastels and colored pencils, but the thing is, that I add too layers with Panpastels, and I'm working to mix the pastels and colored pencils, to see if the pencils show up.

Thank you 😊 Yes, pastelmatt doesn't take as many layers as this Luxarchival sandpaper does so you have to be very careful about how much pastel you add in the first few layers because your colour pencil won't be able to go on top of that!

So would you say that panpastel and colored pencils on the top wouldnt work so good on -for example- PASTELMAT PAPER? Cause i am going to buy your PANPASTEL SET and PASTELMAT PAPER (-a very expensive paper!), but I only have COLORED PENCILS for the last detailed layer, no pastel pencils!! So its very important to know if that panpastel-colored pencil- PASTELMAT- combo doesnt work? 😅

So yes, it can work - there are a lot of artists who use this combination... but from what I have seen, they don't put as many layers on their drawings as I like to add. I personally am not a fan of Pastelmat with Pans and coloured pencils because I prefer to add a lot of layers to create more depth/texture. I do like Pastelmat for Pans and pastel pencils, though... but for coloured pencils, I prefer the Luxarchival sanded paper! However, I have used Pans with coloured pencil on Pastelmat for a few simple pieces but not for anything with a lot of layers! I used that combination for a drawing of some blueberries and also a tulip - both don't need a lot of layer/texture like an animal with feathers or fur would, so it was okay for that! But the pencil doesn't go on top as vibrantly/opaquely as it does on the Luxarchival. When using the Luxarchival, the coloured pencil almost lays down like a pastel pencil would - it's so vibrant, and opaque, and the paper really "grips" the coloured pencil and allows you to add many layers on top of the Pan Pastels Pastelmat doesn't have as much "tooth" as the Luxarchival, so it depends on what kind of subjects you would like to draw! If you have the Pastelmat already, you can use it for the time being, but I'd try and choose less complicated subjects that don't require as many layers and also try to add a very thin layer of Pans in the first layer so you're not filling up the tooth of the paper too quickly and you'll be able to add more coloured pencil on top This is one of the videos where I used Pastelmat with Pans and coloured pencil (before I discovered Luxarchival) so you can see how it works a little better kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m7WAopec3Nq3qqc.html And this is another video of Pans and Coloured pencil on Luxarchival kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m9GPidCgvcq8qHU.html

Gorgeous work! I just bought the Caran Dache pencils because I heard a KZfaqr say they were the best ones to use over pan pastels, but I find the more pale colors don't show at all. Maybe if I used the Lux Archival that would help? Or do you just feel the other pastel pencils are better?

If you are using pastel pencils with pan pastels, I recommend Clairefontaine Pastelmat (it's the only paper that I like for pastels because it allows for many layers and has a smooth result) If you are using normal coloured pencils over pan pastels, then I only recommend the Luxarchival paper because it has a little more "tooth" which allows your coloured pencils to show on top of the pan pastel (again, there's no other paper that I have found that works as well for this combination) Caran D'ache have normal coloured pencils (Luminance or Pablos - Luminance is the "upper end" pencil and have better lightfastness) but they also have pastel pencils, so I'm not sure which one you've purchased, but depending on whether it's normal coloured pencil or pastel pencil will determine which paper to use I hope that helps! 😊

Yep you can pretty much do all of my pastel Patreon pastel tutorials with the pans and Pitt pastel pencils! I also use Stabilo Carbothello because the colours between the two sets are a bit different.. but you don't need to have both when you are first starting 😊

I’m going to be joining you over on Patreon Feb 1st. I’m so hopeful that you actually do record the whole process with pastels & pencils and don’t speed them up. Everyone advertises that they do full length tutorials for this medium, but it’s either falling short, over priced and saying they’re shutting down their site to charge even MORE somewhere else. As soon as I heard that I immediately canceled that Patreon, after only being there a few days. She was using crayola colored pencils and arteza paper?!? What professional artist recommends these?!? I absolutely don’t understand that, but maybe bcuz people are attracted to cheap supplies. It doesn’t make sense, but from what I’ve seen you do..,I’m super excited 😆

I've decided that I'm going to save for a 20 pan set. I was going to buy a 10color set but between the tools that don't come with it and a couple of colors extra I like to use it would be way more worth it to get the 20 color set. I was debating between buying them little by little or getting the set but it makes a 50€ difference.

@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt I ended up getting a 20 set for christmas last year! The burnt sienna came partly broken but I got all the loose pastel and I pressed it into an empty eyeshadow pan and it's completely functional. Revisiting some of your videos! I hope you are doing okay

Can one use watercolor on backgrounds as well as pastel pencils or colored pencils if i cant afford pan pastels?

Yes absolutely! I have used light layers of gouache (an opaque kind of watercolour) under pastel pencils, and I have also used watercolour under normal coloured pencil drawings and they both work beautifully! Just remember that any water-based medium will need to be applied first, make sure everything is dry, then add your pastel or coloured pencil on top of that If you try to add water on top of pastel or coloured pencil, it may not adhere properly and can affect the archival quality of your artwork 😊

Hi Kirsty. I am seriously thinking about joining your Patreon class. I have been using coloured pencils for some time now but only following tutorials not doing my own photos. I have some pan pastels but have only used them once for a background, love both the products and would love to learn more about them. My question is which tier would you suggest I start in. I really love everything about the one you are doing now but I think I saw on your Patreon that it was in the second tier, but that’s the sort of thing I would like to do. I was also thinking of joining for the twelve months so how long is the special on for? Can you recommend a second choice of paper for pastels and coloured pencils together because I feel that Lux is a bit expensive for me to start on. 🌹

Hi Di, Thank you for considering joining Patreon! You can start on the lowest tier and see how you go! Then you can upgrade at any time if you feel you would like to try another tier 😊 The special will continue until the end of the year, so there is time to have a go, and upgrade if you wish (and still take advantage of the special) If you join for a year, then decide to upgrade, Patreon will just charge you the difference 😊 The Luxarchival does make a huge difference, but the second paper I would choose is Clairefontaine Pastelmat! A lot of artists use this but you have to be a bit more careful about how much pastel you're putting down before your coloured pencil because it won't take as many layers as the Luxarchival - it's still doable but you may need to play around with it a bit more to get used to it 😊 But I highly recommend saving for some Luxarchival because it really is a game changer when you're working with Pans and coloured pencil! I hope that helps!

It depends which supplies you use. The Pan Pastels and pastel pencils I am using are lightfast, which means they will last a long time under museum conditions! If you purchase most "student grade" or cheaper supplies, they probably have very low lightfast ratings which means they will most-likely discolour/fade/yellow over time 😊

I don't understand 😕 I'm Using panpastel for a portrait and....... • The tooth of my portrait looks like the MOON I'm using the Assorted Colors pastel paper pad - Artist Series by Canson. • The pastel PENCILS I bought to make details aren't showing up, not one bit, over the panpastels. 😮💨 I don't know what to do.

The paper you're using makes a huge difference! It's the most important supply when it comes to working with pastels If you're using Pan Pastels with pastel pencils, then the only paper I recommend is the Clairefontaine pastelmat (there is no other paper like it) If you are using Pan Pastels with normal wax/oil based coloured pencils then I only recommend Luxarchival sanded paper by Brush and Pencil Every other paper I have tried has either made it look super grainy, or not allowed the amount of layers I needed to be able to put details on top - so definitely try Pastelmat 😊
