I worked at the movie theater when this came out. We had to convince many parents that is was not at all for children. Pointing out that it was also subtitled really helped, and not mentioning the terrible violence. Also one of the traces that showed she was there was that she saved the fig tree, killing the toad allowing it to bloom again.

Ha I saw this movie when I was around Ofelia's age, 11ish--my parents never cared much about what's child-appropriate media lool. It's one of my favorite movies of all time, nostalgic and beautiful. And it was so moving for me to see Ofelia, this young girl like me, be rewarded for disobedience, which I felt this movie was about. And it made walking through woods or playing outside more magical too, imagining a labyrinth around the corner. I did close my eyes for the rabbit scene though and can't watch it to this day.

Fun fact: Guillermo Del Toro used to hum the lullaby to his own kids, and the composer recorded him and wrote it into the movie.

to me, it's quite clear that Ofelia's journey was real. just because the Captain didn't see the Faun, doesn't mean he didn't exist. Mercedes (I believe) said that adults grow out of fairytales and to me that means that adults can no longer see things like fairies and fauns. as you said, the chalk proved to me that it was all real; otherwise how else would she have escaped? I love this beautiful movie and I always see it as a happy ending because Ofelia (Princess Moanna) finally made it back to her world and reunited with her family. p.s. seeing Poptart in your video made me sad, and I hope you're doing okay. so sorry for your loss and I'm sending you big hugs ❤

great reaction! this is one of my all time favorites, such a cool mix of fantasy and real history. btw, i think i saw your post about your cat, it kinda hurt seeing you hugging your friend this video since it's obviously recorded prior(( my condolences, hope you're feeling better. rest in peace, Poptart 💜

Obviously they go a long way to play the, "Is it real, or is it imagination to escape an awful situation?" card. The one thing that always tips it for me is the chalk. Without that being real, there's no (good) explanation for how she escapes the room.

@@Beatriz_MS I don't think you paid attention to the end. They asked her to sacrifice her brother, but that was the final test. She was allowed back because she chose to sacrifice herself instead of harm an innocent.

This movie is SO good! The Faun is an actor in a real suit (Doug Jones who is an expert in moving around in prostetics), although they used CGI to remove certain parts (his real legs sticking through the suit etc.)! Edit: BTW he also plays the monster with the hand... eyes! Edit 2: Ah, you did notice it was Doug Jones! 😉

Ofelia's death hit me hard when I watched this a long time ago. For me, it doesn't matter if the fantasy part is real or not. That's the beauty of the movie. Whichever ending you want to believe, they're all equally beautiful.

This movie is so good. I remember trying to rent it from the video store as a kid, and being rejected by the R rating. I was under the impression that "fantasy = child friendly" and it is NOT that. I'm happy you gave this film a watch, because it is fantastic.

Haven't seen this in so long, such a beautiful movie. I always took it to be real for her, but as she was an innocent child she was the only one who could see it. I also kind of felt as if she was supposed to die in order for her soul to take its rightful place, otherwise her sacrificing herself for her brother wouldn't have been the final test. Pan also mentioned how if she didn't do what was needed she would just continue to grow old and never take her throne. To me that all sort of added up as a larger prophecy, and she was really experiencing everything instead of just imagining it in her dying moments. (At least that's what I tell myself to enjoy it and not cry)

To me, this film is like The Tibetan Book of the Dead. If you buy into it 100%, you're home free and it's a happy ending. If you doubt or hesitate, you're lost. And yes, it may be that not everyone is WORTHY to see the faun.

Yes, I think it is very deliberately left open to the viewer’s interpretation whether the magic is actually real, or just all in her head. The story the mother tells at the dinner, of how she and the Captain got together- my theory… it seems to me it’s subtly implied the Captain may have been actively involved in bringing about her husband’s death (Ofelia’s father), which may explain why he doesn’t like it talked about; either because he fears that someone might catch on, or because he doesn’t like the reminder of what he did. Not only do I suspect the feast was enchanted to almost hypnotize Ofelia into eating when she knew she mustn’t; but also- a detail that’s easily missed- she was under punishment for having dirtied her pretty new dress: *_she hadn’t eaten in about a day._*

Dude, you should watch Devil's Backbone. It's a prequel to this set at the start of the Spanish Civil War and plays out more like a Ghost Story. It's glorious and nowhere near as bleak as this.

Just to add on to this comment, del Toro has said that these movies his was of opening a conversation about the Spanish civil war, which was kind of swept under the rug since it was such a dark and traumatic time for Spain and WW2 happened right around the same time, which helped to overshadow it. The devil's backbone is about the effect on young boys, and labyrinth is the same for young girls. I'm more familiar with labyrinth. It has a lot of felopian, imagery and themes; the tree is formed like felopian tubes (interesting parallel that it can only flourish once the thing I side is dead, much like her mother at that point, who would have survived if she had a abortion, but that might be a reach), obvs the blood in the book that you noticed, the pale man murals in the book, the two female role models in her life, her submissive mother and Mercedes who's afraid but fighting, almost seems like she's looking down two roads at who she could be. I love this movie so damn much! Edit- yes loss of innocence is such a big theme in both movies!

this movie is a masterpiece in its tragedy. while following a second plot thats obviously so fantasy and magical based, it somehow manages to be the most sobering and realistic movie out there in terms of it's brutality

Absolutely beautiful film. Saw it in the cinema and had a nightmare about the Pale Man chasing me through the house. Woke up hidden under my bed sheets.

I absolutely adore the themes of oppression, rebellion and disobedience this movie convays. Here we have poor Ofelia who was stuck in a world of senseless violence where people were expected to follow rules and orders with no second thought and as she discovers a new world she believes this one will be better, but in the end is just as cruel as the real world because she's also expect to follow a senseless order to let her own brother die to get there. In actuality, both worlds are equally cruel and harsh and isn't that a downer

Doug Jones is the FANTASTIC creature actor who brought Fauno and The Pale Man to life in this film. There's a wonderful little documentary here on KZfaq called Doug Jones I The Man Behind the Masks that I recommend to anyone who enjoys his character work.

Saw this in a local, vintage theater. Where I sat, there was a funny glare on the screen on the left side, so I didn't see how brutal the bottle-face scene was in the beginning. So then a few years later I was watching it with my partner on a big screen and was surprised by how graphic it really was 😂

One of my all time favorites from Mr. Del Toro. Another amazing film that messed up my brain was that 2007 Spanish film The Orphanage, Mr. Del Toro was a producer in that film. But omg when I saw it I seriously thought it was done by the man himself. LOL!

About the Pale Man, there's a 2017 tweet by Guillermo del Toro: "The Pale Man represents all institutional evil feeding on the helpless. It's not accidental that he is a) Pale b) a Man. He's thriving now." And in a 2006 interview: "The Pale Man represents the Church for me, y'know? [He] represents fascism and the Church eating the children when they have a perversely abundant banquet in front of them. There is almost a hunger to eat innocence. A hunger to eat purity." Yeah, that checks out. (I was sad when I learned about Poptart's passing. I have two cat companions, Salem and Abigail, and I know how important they can be to us, how we come to love them. Much love to you in this moment, you're one of my favorite content creators. ❤)

I think a good example of the kind of movie you imagined this was before going in was something like “Coraline” or even “Labyrinth”, like I did. I was tempted to watch it when I was younger as it appeared to be a creepy fairytale that I was drawn to at that age, but I never got around to it (and was too scared of the Pale Man). In retrospect, I’m very glad I didn’t, finally watched it in college and man it’s a tough watch. So beautiful and so horrid. Loved revisiting this with you, and getting few more moments with sweet Poptart 💕

The Pale Man was probably influenced by the mythological Lamia, although a Lamia is usually female instead of male, she has the ability to take out and re-insert her own eyes and devours children. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamia I have also heard of the creature being referred to as an ogre too, and it was apparently influenced by the painting Saturn Devouring His Son; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturn_Devouring_His_Son The creature also resembles a Tenome from Japanese folklore; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenome

@@Omn1Media The show gets much better as it goes and I love the world building as they used some books & graphic novels to build on the lore. I think Jim Henson would have been proud of what they were able to accomplish using as much practical puppetry as possible, they only use elements of cgi when necessary. The making of documentary is amazing and I loved the voice cast.

For years they tried to convince the director to make a gringo version, because they don't like to read subtitles, they offered him a sack of money, but he refused because Ophelia would be asian, the captain black and the faun in cgi and they would remove all the violence to turn it into a Marvel action comedy

I always like when people just *instantly* go into the darker interpretation of the ending It is just so rough, I guess I "admire" the mental willingness to accept the darker reading - I do the same, and this movie really made me just cry down my shirt, it's so brutal! THAT SAID - even if you accept the fairy tale Faun was real ending; she STILL dies! Her father's kingdom is underground, it is stated in the intro it has no lies, no pain - but also no blue sky! She can only "dream of being human" - it is so unbearable, she escapes this place to begin with - to exist among the humans, if only for a short time Horrifying either way!

Ofelia had a tattoo to recognize that she is a reincarnated goddess. It sounds wild but pans labyrinth is loosely based off of someone s actual life. She is hopefully not reincarnating anymore especially if her stepfather was that awful

Groans.odin krishna, Tammuz are pre Christian stories that are similar to Jesus. I get it that del toro is a devout Catholic but im not. Someone told del toro this story and i suspect it is loosely based off of someone s actual life. As it is said truth is stranger than fiction

Someone who doesnt watch movies because they are subtitled aka not american is kind of a red flag.. Like..a xenophobic red flag Americans realize theres a world outside of america right? Therefore there are thousands of movies from each country..besides america. And those movies are in our language, not english
