Would you recommend the 42.5mm or the 25mm lens if I want to start doing 4k Product Videos, using Photo box with artificial lighting, it can be as small as CPU to as big as Router or Playstation 4? Or maybe one of the Zoom lenses like Olympus M.Zuiko digital ED 12-50mm 3.5-6.3 EZ ED MSC, it has Macro, power zoom and maybe it can workhorse to replace all lenses? Right now I have the small power zoom 12-42 panasonic lens, its OK but I want something more quality and better suited for Product photography.

Great job. I have the 1.2. I was wondering about the diff to 1.7. Il keep my 1.2. Love it for various reasons. But that extra speed really helps. And the smooth OOF areas are had to beat.

Thanks so much for the excellent review! You guys sure do put in a lot of work for us regular folks! You reinforced my thoughts about the Pany 42.5 f/1.7 lens. I simply love mine. Can you please tell me where to find the reviews on the Panasonic 30mm lens and the review on the Panasonic G7 that you mentioned in the above video? I'd love to hear what you have to say, esp the 30mm macro. I had that on my list of wanted lenses. Thx!!!!

Great review. The Leica panny 42.5 F1.2 is £765 on eBay at present. A very tempting proposition indeed. I nearly pulled the trigger on it today, however, I have the Olympus 45mm F1.8 already, and if you use a tripod with a GH4 the images you get can be stellar. You have helped me save my money and come to my senses. Thanks, Max.

Great job! Your reviews are one of the best I've seen. Very to the point with excellent audio and editing. Regarding the micro jitter, it was an issue with Pana 12-35 for quite a while. However they came up with firmware update which fixed the issue (lens update, not the body). I guess they did the same for 42.5 1.2 but you need to update it.

I currently have a T6i and few lenses and wanted to keep it for ease of video as main camera and Olly as B roll but am considering replacing 6i with the G7 that's heavily discounted now for price and get the 4k but I love my canon lenses and know i can use Olly lenses there too. great video - thanks - I do have the Oly and I do have the EM1 and Em5 but I just really prefer and enjoy using my GX7's and GX8 more although there is no doubt about the IQ from the EM1 and EM5 - the EM5 collects dust as I hate the tiny and camped Display button on it and both are a pain to put in my bags and pull out due to the bit EVF hump - I much prefer a flat top Range Finder style :) I use my Oly 45mm F1.8 quite a bit and prefer it over my 50mm F1.8 Sony on my A6000 - but now that I know that the Pani 42.5 F1.7 with IS is even better yet still small and light and comes with a hood :) I think I need to put it on my shopping list soon - hope to remember to use your link - To me it is amazing how good the IQ is out of the Oly for the money so something a bit better for $396 is a given - I assume that at some point or if not already my GX8 can be in Dual mode with the new Pani -

Amazing comparison! Thank you so much for making it! Well cut and on point all the time - thumbs up!! A minor thing that could have done your video even better would be to write something else on screen when comparing the videos. What I mean is this: When I see 3 names written e.g. @2:01 then it's not easily readible - too many similar numbers. I had to pause the video every time this came up. Instead I would have written Panasonic 1.2, Panasonic 1.7 and Olympus. :-) But amazing video! Very insightful! I was keen on the Olympus before seing this review, but your review leaned me a lot more to the Pan 1.7!

I'm really worried of my choice in camera. I believe I'm gonna go with the Lumix G7 strictly due to it's price vs what it offers though I'm a bit worried about the low MP count for future proofing it as a daily shooter over newer smartphones. Furthermore I'm scared it won't be good video since I strictly film whilst moving and having it handheld and it doesn't offer any IBIS but it certainly seems like the lens stabilizer is quite decent and might actually make it a better choice over the olympus m10 mark II
@MarcosCodas
@MarcosCodas 8 жыл бұрын
+ScrattleGG Hey! I know I didn't make this video so take my advice with a grain of salt. Regarding the MP count: it matters a lot less than they'll make you believe. What does matter is sensor size, and any camera will have smartphones beat there. It's not about how many MP it captures, but what the MP contain. Regarding the G7: I was in the same situation as you. Which is why I'm happy that I waited, because Panasonic is releasing the GX85 THIS WEEK, which is a GX7 successor. It has 5-axis body image stabilization, and although it's a bit more expensive than what G7 sells for these days (about $150 more, MSRP), I think the IBIS alone is worth the admission price. A lot of people are having a downer on the GX85 for video because it doesn't include a mic input, but anybody who's REALLY serious about video uses off-board recorders with better pre-amps, so I never understood the issue myself. The GX85 is much more compact, and while it does lack an extra dial and a couple of shooting modes over the G7, you get better image quality in stills with a removed anti aliasing filter. So, swings and roundabouts. I'm buying the GX85 after thinking about the G7 long and hard (moving away from Canon APS-C). I hope my (many) hours of research can help you a bit.

Consideration of bokeh should also be a factor especially when intended use is portraiture or flowers etc. For this reason I went for olympus lens as it has more rounded, less distracting bokeh than the 42.5 f1.7. Admittedly the Panasonic has near macro in its favour but I figured that's a job for another lens anyway. My top criteria was good enough sharpness wide open in the middle and decent bokeh. I think the search for razor sharp glass eliminates many lenses that have other qualities that when added up just give that unique look that is natural rather than clinical. I say this as a user of many cameras and owner of some very sharp glass. I fell back in love with my Canon 5D Mk1 despite having Sony A9 and A7R2..

Very good point. Just seen a video from Skyler King which compared the bokehs: the Oly showed lights as circular, the Pana was "jagged" (seemed to be showing the aperture blades?)

Yep, I've been using the Olympus for more than 10 years and a few days ago I got the Panasonic for 100€, a deal I couldn't pass. The Panasonic is indeed much sharper across the frame for landscapes but it definitely has more nervous and distracting bokeh compared to the Olympus. Both are very nice and I'll probably keep them both, it won't break the bank.

Hey max great video comparing these lenses. I don't really know the difference in lenses yet as I'm still learning, I recently purchased g7 and would using it mostly for KZfaq reviews. I'm intrested in upgrading the kit lens it came with and I'm loving your preference on the Panasonic lens 1st lens 1.8 however would you think this would be good for viewing close up tech shots and about 10 feet shoots. I don't really know what MM means for lenses
@Dune00z
@Dune00z 7 жыл бұрын
If you're shooting real close up, you will probably want a macro lens (depending on how close). You can usually get close enough with either the 42.5/45 for most normal work, so it just depends on what you're doing. mm = millimeters and helps tell you what the viewing angle, compression, and other qualities might be on the lens itself. Higher MM number = more telephoto it will be, lower MM number = wider. the 45mm is technically in the "normal" range but behaves on a native m43 camera like a 90mm due to the crop factor on M43 sensors (like the G7). I strongly recommend renting or borrowing any lenses before you buy. Also, if you are shooting macro/close up work, you can adapt an old 50mm lens (like a canon fd 50mm f1.8) that costs 30 dollars using a 20 dollar adapter and it will behave good enough for what you are doing. 50 dollars total VS 350+, although you will be sacrificing any autofocus or OIS, however I highly doubt OIS is necessary if you are using a tripod. I have a Director of Photographer friend who uses both Zeiss and old Canon FD glass on her Red Dragon, so yes the image quality for video holds up today.

The 45mm Elmarit macro is one of the nicest lenses I've used of any system. Although I'm diversified in terms of cameras, it's the one lens I can I can't find an equivalent of in other systems. I can see having a m43 body forever just to to use this lens, unless I go nuts and buy a Leica SL with a $$$6k or Leica macro lens. It was (relative) cheap, too. About $500 from Japan. One of the few lenses with absolutely 0 distortion on DXO. A bit slow to autofocus, but perfect for manual, and I always get breathtaking photos & videos from it. Also works brilliantly on Olympus bodies, unlike my Nocticron for some reason, which for some bizarre reason exhibits too much CA on Oly bodies, but not necessarily on my GH4. Kinda weird.

The 45 or 42.5 from either manufacturer if you like the 45mm focal length when using your current zoom lens but also want better image quality and low light capability in a much smaller package. Now that Panasonic has IBIS in almost all of their camera bodies, these stabilized lenses allow for dual IS. The Panasonic 42.5 f/1.7 is more expensive then the Olympus, but it is also sharper, faster, and gets you the dual stabilization on newer bodies.

Stabilisation and camera shake - 42-45mm is a long lens on MFT, a telephoto, and is at the point where a lens needs stabilisation hand held. The unstabilised Olly works well on an Olympus back like the E-M5ii but on a Panasonic, it needs the tripod. Shutter rule of thumb to hand hold unstabilised, round up the focal length ~1/60s minimum. The Panasonic 42.4 f/1.2 will shake more because it is physically heavier. On a Panasonic back increase shutter speed until the red stabilisation lamp goes out All of these lenses have good glass however a faster lens will always have better definition. A quick comparison I did found the adapted Chinon 50mm f/1.9 to be about the same as the Olympus 45mm f/1.8. Technically the magic number is focal length divided by aperture, so the Chinon 50mm f/1.4 (35.7) should be the same or better than the Panny 42.5 f/1.2 (35.4), it is certainly better than the Olly 45mm. Chinon were similar to Pentax but with even better glass, but of course they adapt as all-manual.

Can either of you answer the bokeh question? I'd love to know how much better the bokeh is with the Nocticron 1.2 vs. panasonic 1.7 is.

Bravo to Panasonic for including power o.i.s, thus providing us (consumers) a fantastic portrait lens. I bought one this last xmas, absolutely no regrets! With that said, that Leica is sweet. The 45mm without a lens-hood, c'mon Oly. Panasonic, please keep making products that provide value to consumers! Max, nice review sir.

Hello Max, i need a little help. I have GH4 and G7 cameras and i bought Tamron 24-70 2.8 (canon) because of IS and good range for weddings. It's working perfect with Metabones speedbooster but that SB is mostly used on DJI RoninM with Tokina 11-16 for wider shot as i can get. I don't have another SB for Tamron so i bought cheaper Commlite adapter with IS support , but IS doesn't work, only with canon lenses it works .... Do you know any adapter which will work IS on Tamron 24-70 ? .. I do not want extra light or AF ... just need IS and Aperture control ... or is this Panasonic 42.5 F1.7 as good image quality as Tamron 24-70 ( how about bokeh , sharpness ) Should I consider to switch that Tamron for Panasonic ? .. Is the manual ring focusing nice and smooth? ... What would you do in my case? thank you so much for your advise :)

The 42.5 is a great lens but its different with the focal range. The focus ring won't be as good as its electronic. I haven't tried that combo so I can't say for sure but you could try this amzn.to/2hNlP6Z its a reputable brand is right in between the price of commlite and Metabones non speedbooster adapter.

Really great review, well structured and it's very easy to listen to you. So after watching I'll probably buy the Panasonic 1.7, even though you get the olympus a good bit cheaper on ebay. One thing I would have wanted you to talk about and that's the bokeh since some people complained about that in the pana 1.7 lens.

+wotsn123 I could have mentioned it, and yes the 42.5 F1.2 is best, but not 4X as good. I know none of my clients would ever notice a difference, or care.

+Max Yuryev so you wouldn't call the pana 1.7 bokeh 'nervous'? that's what I read a couple of times but who knows maybe it's different from lens to lens

Thanks for the review, a lot of useful info provided. I am about to buy the 1.7 Panasonic, hope it would be a great addition to the kit 12-60 kit lens. What would you recommend for a zoom lens in the same price category (for GX9)? Thanks

I use an Olympus 12-100 on my Panasonic Lumix DMC G9. I can update lens firmware using my camera, Olympus has a special download for Panasonic people. I expect that the stabilisation works as well.

Thanks for the video. Any reason why Panasonic doesn't offer OIS on their 12mm, 15mm, and 25mm prime lenses? Is it not needed as much as those wider angles? I would still like OIS on those types of lenses for shooting video or does it not matter?
