Excellent review (as are all your others). My favorite review is for your favorite G80/85 settings and your 1 yr review. As a group they have iconvinced me to purchase this specific camera as a solid performance purchase with a future. The settings choices and lenses available were overwhelming for me without further instruction. Your videos capture all the information necessary so tightly on your favorite settings and use recommendations that I must often replay segments, and pretty much all the time. IMHO a MUCH better video experience than being bored with too much talk and not enough actual substance. BRAVO and Kudos. Keep up the great work Short. Concise and TTP (to the point info). I really appreciate your prep work, concise editing, frequent examples and in real life "field experience" that it all requires. Thank You very much.

Great review, thanks. I purchased my G85 in May 2017 and have been using the heck out of it. Just took a 2-week hike in Ireland through rain and wind and sand and it performed amazingly well. Big con, however: if you use WiFi function to connect to your mobile, expect your battery life to evaporate in minutes. I can only hypothesize, but it appears the WiFi radio is a battery beast, so be ready w/ a spare battery if you use this feature.

@@TheHybridShooter Hi Sir, of the XT200 and G85 which will you will suggest? My priorities are 4K video and camera should be heating up, autofocus yes to be good if not then I will live with manual but yes 4K without much heating issues and long 4K videos. I have watched the XT200 video of yours where you have mentioned you like the Champaign Gold color. Please reply as there are some deals and I do not want to miss them. There is $100 difference between them. XT200 on the expensive side.

For myself and the work I'm using my G85 for the camera is perfect and performs above and beyond for my music videos, and standard youtube videos. For live events I go with my Canon 80D, but for someone who wants great 4k, and plans on shooting music videos with effects, just dope videos the g85 is a great buy. I love it! I also have the Panasonic HM-150 video camera only since 2010 and it finally had it's run, which is why I got the G85 to replace it. So for the short film maker and music video director who wants a 4k and something easy, fast out of the box and you rely on your creativity, effects and sound more than an expensive camera this works perfect. A nice camera helps a lot, but when it comes down to it people it's all about content.

If you are recording video in 4k does it show you the actual crop for 4k on the lcd before you start recording, or do you have to guess at the framing?

Nice video, thank you! So, does this have any weeknesses? And...can the app get the camera to focus for video? I love that feature, saw Tony Nortrop demonstrating it on the GH5, which sadly is a bit expensive.

Thanks, yes, it has weaknesses, the autofocus in video is probably the biggest one, the app only lets you select where should the camera focus, but it doesnt fix the autofocus in any way. ISO performance is also considerably worse than with APS-C. But it is a great package overall.

A6500 kit is $1298 USD and the G85 is $897. I'd say the Panasonic is the better value if you can deal with the autofocus and sub par low light performance.

Thanks for a great review. Lowlight is the Achilles Heel of these cameras. Cheaper to get a bigger sensor than larger aperture lenses. But then you lose some portability. It's a tough choice, but I think APS-C retains a significant advantage here that is really difficult for MFT to overcome.

Difference between APS-C and MFT is about the same as difference between APS-C and full frame. And regarding low light it depends what you need. You can use 12-35/f2.8 with dual IS on G85 and you'll be able to somewhat reliably use times as low as 1/4-1/10s hand held for static pictures at least on wider end. I think lens is way cheaper than it used to be, but it's perhaps as expensive as camera. For social events it's better to use something like 20mm/f1.7 or Oly 45mm/f1.8 and these are not expensive, you don't need IS, you need to keep time at 1/60s or shorter because people are moving. I agree that APSC or FF is better in that case and sadly I think that G85 has quite outdated sensor.

got my g85 just last week and boy I am amazed by its stabilization...i uploaded a montage of my shots all in handheld... and at first look you might think it was shoot on a gimbal.. ;)

In some situations it can be a substitute for gimbal, although gimbal is still a great thing to have.

G7 had the mic socket higher up above the HDMI and USB sockets where it is not in the way of the LCD in most cases. The G95 returned the mic socket to this location. Don't know why they screwed it up on the G85. For me it's not going to be a problem as I'll probably only use the external mic when shooting indoors to make youtube videos, and would then use an external monitor.

2023 says hello. It beat the E-M5 II for me, especially in handling and controls. Had two and the 12-60 3.5, kept one body only (with grip) but the used market is dipping so fast now I might need to sell ASAP to fund a G9 or E-M1 II upgrade within the next year, expecting both to drop below €500, maybe get a lucky kit bag with pro glass and some acc. from a late upgrader. I'm using Oly 25/1.8, 45/1.,8, 14-150II/4 and adapted old glass sometimes. Also a beat up E-PL7 that just keeps going, might get the 12-32 and/or 17/1.8 for that. Anyway - 16MP is perfectly fine for my needs exactly as stated in this video, probably for smaller print as well. I haven't used 4k photo (8MP) for kids, pets, school events yet, if that turns out great I'll just keep it forever, sort of. Haven't done any video yet either.

so today if you were going to buy a camera would you get a used sony a6500 or a new panasonic g85? I really like low light capabilities of sony as well as autofocus advantage but am leaning towards the image stabilization of the panasonic

It all depends on your preferences, both are great cameras, Panasonic has better lens selection than Sony APS-C though, so that might be important as well.

July 13 2017 ... Hi: I just got the G85 last week after having the GH3 for 2 years. Could you please tell me why as written in the Manual -Page 145, both Stabilizer modes for Normal shooting and Panning are only effective for picture taking and the E-Stabilization is meant for Video mode? One of the reasons I got this camera is the usage of the Stabilizer for the video not the photo. I heard that the E-Stabilization actually does nothing while recording video. Also hold-pressing some of the Function buttons make me a bit confused to bring up so many other options. I wish they would have kept the Bracketing mode on the left dial like in the GH3. The Extended Tele Conversion doesn't work in 4K video Mode. Thank you.

Stabilization in all modes incl. dual IS 2 definitely works in video mode, the manual that I found only has 72 pages and it also written there ftp://ftp.panasonic.com/camera/om/dmc-g85_en_om.pdf on page 37, no need to worry about that. E- stabilization only crops frame and moves picture around, it can be also done in post, I don´t recommend using that. Tele conversion doesn't work in 4K because it is already using its full resolution.

Is your rubber on the top of the grip still glued to the body? Mine came off after just a couple of months. Not sure if it was that I used in rain , but the camera should manage that too. Not so good quality maybe? =P

I have G85 and haven't figured out if I could use "half pressing shutter" in order to move focus point where I want in the frame. it takes a picture as soon as I press the shutter and dying to know if it's capable. Any idea?

Very good question, but honestly, I don't know. I have investigated the situation a couple of months ago, but unfortunately, no one has been able to remove the recording limit on G80 or G81 so far.

No, it completely stops recording and it just saves 29 min. and 59 sec. long clip.

Not really, that wouldn’t make sense. AF on G80 is much worse. Sony A6100, A6400 or Fuji X-T30 are better choices.

I just recently purchased the Panasonic G85. I set it up and started shooting video in 4K. As long as the camera is still and not panning left or right the video playback looks great. When I am shooting hand held and panning left or right the video has a lot of shudder and not smooth at all. The settings are 24fps and 1/50 shutter speed. I see a lot of footage shot with the camera and you don't see the shudder when panning. Are my settings wrong? Can you give me any suggestions to stop the shuddering video?

There is special image stabilization mode for panning in G85, try using that.

Thanks, you can do that by adjusting the HUE slider in HSL tab or Camera Calibration tab in Adobe Lightroom (or other editing software).

Out of the Sony a6500 and G85/80 which one would you get? Essentially is the sony worth the extra cost/lense limitations?

Answer to this question is very complicated, it essentially comes down to whether you prefer performance or usability and ease of workflow. If I could only keep one, it would be A6500 because of the AF and stills performance in extreme conditions, but having said that, I definitely intend to keep my G80 as well. I will make a full comparison video soon.

Hey man! I loved this video and its gotten me even more curious on the G85 (US for me), but have you tried the M50 II out? I am really deciding on which of the two to get... I like the IBIS, M43 lens system, and weather sealing. But for the M50 II I am liking the APS-C and 24MP. However I know 4K is unusable on the M50 but on the G85 it seems to be awesome! We would mainly be using it for stills anyways but that doesn't mean we won't play with the video (We have decent smartphones for video if needed).

M50 is still the worst camera that I have ever tested, M50 II is basically just as bad, so G85 is much better choice. Sony A6100 would be the best choice though, if you don't mind the viewfinder.

@@TheHybridShooter Oh wow, I am going to watch your M50 video then! Do you have a recommendation for a camera under 800 USD that has a fully articulating LCD, EVF, Good stills and decent 4K? Mirrorless preferred (for compactness) and IBIS if possible. Thats kind of how I fell on the G85. I might look into some Fuji options. Olympus has the OMD 10 IV but thats a flip screen and reviews seem okay. The Nikon Z50 seems to be just outside of range, similarly to the XT30 from Fuji and the EM5 II was being considered. Not much from Canon and Sony Alphas are expensive!

As I wrote, Sony A6100 or A6400. You need to sacrifice IBIS, but it is worth it for the AF, better image quality and lens selection.

If anybody can me explain. I live in Europe in country where is PAL system and I should use g80. I want to buy Panasonic g85 in USA and I though this model has video system NTSC. I am realy confusing because on this movie at about 9:30 is showed LCD screen with frame rates. On the screen you can see frame rates 50p, 50i, 25p which are for PAL and 30p, 60p, which are for NTSC. So what it means? Can I choose PAL or NTSC? Is this multi system? Screen which is showed is from G80 or G85? Thank you for answer. Adam

Camera shown in this video is actually G80. I unfortunately don't know what frame rates are available in G85.

I think I'm decided on getting the Panasonic G85 (over the Sony a6500). My only concern is the low light on the Panasonic when taking video and photos at live music sessions. Would having the Panasonic 25mm 1.7 or 25mm 1.4mm significantly help with this? I know not at the level of the Sony... I borrowed a canon 700D to test for a month using the 50mm 1.8 lens (the cheap plastic canon one) and it was pretty good. Maybe a bit more light would have been nice. Would the Panasonic G85 be better/worse/same as this? Maybe running at 4K would actually make the footage even worse in low light compared to 1080 on a Canon 700D The Canon had awful autofocus most the time so I had plenty of practice with manual focus, started to get decent at doing that. I've seen the autofocus is kinda not so good on the Panasonic. I'm going to be mainly video (with photos every now and then) doing interviews, recording b-roll close up footage of live music to cut in with a GoPro and iPhone as static tripod shots, run n gun style hand held clips with music equipment at meet ups/interviews, tutorial/music equip overviews. I think I'd like the Sony a6500 but the over heating really worries me - especially when doing tutorial style clips - wanting to record and hour to chop up later, and the non flip screen would make it a real pain to do self filmed clips. As well as the extra costs of the Sony (could get an LED light, extra mic, decent tilt head instead). Thanks to anyone who has read this... sorry for the long winded comment. The torment haha, first world problems when gear researching on a budget 😅

Fast prime lens would help, G85 will be better in low light video than 700D, 4K helps a lot in low light, because 4K noise is much finer than 1080p noise, A6500 doesn't overheat at all and there is special setting so that is doesn't turn off if it gets warm.

Overheating is mostly problem on A6300, I don't remember any review, where A6500 turns off, I have tested it in 35°C or 95°F, shooting 4K without problems, camera did get warm, but noting serious.

7:41 i think you are mistaken between 0.8s and 1/8s because 1/8=0.125s i also checked my g7 for 0.8s and the nearest to that is 1/1.3 wich is nearly 0.77s so maybe it was that since you mentioned 1s handheld but that wasnt exactly 1s lol

No, that is not mistake, it is 0.8 second or 1/1.3 second. It is possible to set that on G85.

GH4 OR G85 I really help need in choosing a camera and I mostly want to make comedy films,just what to know which is best for filmmaking,the GH4 AND G85 almost the same price.It's my first time buying a camera for filmmaking

I much prefer G85, image quality is a bit better because it doesn't have low pass filter, crop in 4K video is slightly smaller, low light is a bit better and big difference for me is In body image stabilization that G85 has and GH4 doesn't. GH4 can do 96 fps in 4K, it does cinema 4K in 24 fps and it has headphone jack, but i prefer G85 future set.

Depends on what are shooting. 12-60 mm F3.5-5.6 shown in the video is IMO the best budget all-round lens. I will make a review of that lens soon.

In video, I'm afraid there is not much to advice there, you can use some sort of lighting, wide aperture lens like Panasonic 20mm F1.7 II, or speedbooster and APS-C lens. You can use 1/40 of second shutter speed and then some noise removal tool in post. If you're talking about 4K video, the GH5 has a definite low light advantage over the G85 because the GH5 has full sensor readout. It's at least one stop better. But even the GH5 isn't as good in low light as a camera with a larger sensor would be. If you're talking about stills or 1080p or lower video, the G85 and GH5 are probably about equal for low light. So, what can you do if you have a G85 and can't afford a GH5? 1) Use lenses with wider apertures. There are some positively LOVELY and relatively inexpensive fast lenses for Micro Four Thirds. If you are still using a kit lens, you are totally missing out. 2) Use artificial light when necessary. Even a reflector can help. Making sure your scenes and subjects are properly lit is more important that good high-ISO performance. 3) If you're STILL struggling with low light, then you might need to step up to a camera with a larger sensor.

If you mean device as a camera, G85 and Sony A6300 are definitely the best options.

Skvelá recenzia! Uvažujem o kúpe "battery gripu" k môjmu G80. Originál Panasonic nie je práve najlacnejší, v ponuke sú aj lacné gripy "tretej strany". Stoja za kúpu alebo radšej originál? Ako sa hovorí, dostaneš takú kvalitu, za akú zaplatíš. Vďaka za radu, nech sa darí!

Ďakujem, osobne by som asi vyskúšal nejaký 3rd party grip ku G80, keďže tá cena v pomere k cene fotoaparátu je dosť vysoká. Ku G9 mám originál a ten je skutočne spracovaný rovnako dobre ako samotný fotoaparát, ale ten som ku G9 dostal zadarmo.

Cameras with APS-C sensors are generally better for stills, but G85 is good hybrid camera for stills and video, also take a look at Sony A6300, it you can find suitable lenses, it is good option.

I just starting up shooting documentarys. On a budget. The g80 cost 600 dollars now in sweden and the a6500 1400. Wich one would you recomend?

As I wrote below, it essentially comes down to whether you prefer performance or usability and ease of workflow. If your budget allows Sigma 18-35mm and MC-11 adapter + some longer lens if you need it, that combination will probably be unbeatable for documentaries, but you can also get great results with G80. I will make a full comparison video soon.

Then you can choose basically whatever you like and prefer, just make sure that the quality is decent, Lowepro, Think Tank and Peak Design are probably the most reputable manufacturers in terms of quality.

I definitely prefer G85, it has much better sensor and the lens on FZ2000 isnt particularly sharp.

Thanks for your feedback. You don't mind the low bitrate on 1080 footage? I find that FZ2k is a bit like a smartphone, with a lot of light you really can get beautiful results but even on a grey cloudy day the noise is all over the place.

Its an excellent choice Joy. i suggest you couple this camera with a 25mm 1.7 prime lens. That gives you a full frame equivalent of 50 mm 3.4 (amazing bang for buck low light). That package is all that you might need for street photography while developing your skills. Play with the 12-60 kit lens, which in my opinion is the best kit lens offered by any mid range camera. Dont be shy to pick up used/second hand gear. Do your research and you should be golden. If you have any specific queries you can ping me in this thread.

I just bought a GX85 used. Unfortunately the listing was incorrect and stated it shoots at 4K60. I don't know enough about the different models to know that none of the GX85s shoot 4K60. So now I'm afraid I'm stuck with a camera I can't use for the kind of slow motion work I want to do in 4K. I'm guessing that 4K30 isn't enough. Have you tried it with any luck?

+Daniel Larsen 30 fps is not enough for slow motion, it won't look good. For 60 fps 4K you need GH5 or you can shoot slow-mo in 1080p 60p and upsale it to match 4K footage.

Of course not, there is no camera that can last 12 hours. it may last 60-100 depending on the settings.

G85 does 4K video, it has very good dual image stabilization and it is weather sealed, T7i has much better autofocus in video and better stills quality, so it depends on your preferences.

Good question :) that is because I was usually using gorillapod or gimbal to gave better grip while holding the camera with one hand and pointing it on my other hand, so couldn't reached for the button to focus.

G85 has some advantages like better controlls, handling and ergonomics, better mechanical shutter, better image stabilization, sensor has no AA filter so sharpness is improved...
