Going off how many youtube videos cover MFT cameras, specifically Lumix.. I can't see them going anywhere. I shoot an a7iii and a g100. The g100 is surprisingly good for being a tiny lil camera (that had horrible marketing) but since I've purchased so many lenses for my lumix, I'd like to get a proper camera to use with the lenses, and keep the g100 as my edc camera.

You are the first person that noticed that the G9 II fits in the same cage as S5 II. Seem the same sensor as GH6 but with PDAF pixels and the image processor of S5II series design by the L2 Alliance. But with that image sensor of the GH6, using dual gain but not dual ISO design. the ISO invariance and ISO performance may be worse then the G9 and GH5 MkII.

I have a Lumix GX85 and a few lenses that I've held off on selling. I'm really hoping the GX9ii is coming soon. If it has this camera's sensor and pdaf, I'll buy it. I think the future GH camera will get the BSI or stacked sensor everyone wants, plus Lumix's new pdaf.

Thanks for the detailed review. It looks like a very strong candidate to replace my G85, I can manage with the noise (even in ISO 6400) and the improvement in AF alone is worth it for me. Just wish it was smaller 😐. I hope they also release a cheaper camera with PDAF in the near future (maybe something like a G90 II), seems like they neglected the lower end of the market in the past few years.

Nice review. Theres a couple things I cant get my head around. First is price, this camera is 1900$ before tax in US. So its really same price of s5ii and refurbished s5iix. Second is size, Its roughly same size and weight as s5ii and x. So what are we buying here ? a camera with potentially cheaper lenses maybe but the new lenses are close to 1000$ a piece. So then the burst shooting and 60 fps 4k modes and 120fps. I really wanted to buy this camera in the lead up to specs but imho this camera should be 1499$ and the lenses should be around 500$ a piece. I own the s5iix and was hoping to add a mft for portability and deals on lenses but I think I will wait and maybe even go apsc route with another brand. For now with s5iix i can slow 30fps footage down with software like topaz for 3 hundred dollars and still have full frame with optinal apsc which outperforms mft. Sorry for critical view here I really wanted to jump into this camera and ecosystem. But still a nice camera. cheers

Thank you. We would be basically be buying a faster version of the S5 II X with better stabilization that works with M43 lenses, whilst sacrificing image quality in pretty much all categories. The price is higher than I expected, but there is not much that I can do about that. As I have said in the video, S5 II / S5 II x is a great proposition for those who don't like this set of features / compromises.

@stevelitton No, the facts aren’t that simple. G9 II uses very effective cooling system from S5 II. Relying on active cooling with such a small sensor is one design failures of the GH6.

Now the Elephant in the room. With the G9II that is according to Panasonic their "photographers" camera. Yet its video set is well spec'd right down to a full size HDMI port. The you know coming GH7 will be the first phase detect focus camera, their MFT video powerhouse. I wonder why I would want the G9II? I can wait for the the used S5 II with more ability and full frame and phase detect auto focus already available used at either the same price for the G9 II or even less. So I would just get a used S5 II instead than any of the G series cameras, though that G9 II is really nice. I don't like swing out displays. Makes caging the camera not as attractive as a pivot back. The MFT does give you 2x crop for great reach for free, but with the S5 II what do I want the G9 II or the up coming GH7? Panasonic is doing very good things, and it is best of times for them. Arguing either G or S series cameras says so. I love it. Keeping Sony and others honest. A very good deal for us enthusiasts.

I had a Lumix G9. Its a nice camera but even a second hand APSC or full frame camera from other companies like Sony will provide better image quality. For being such a small sensor, the body is even bigger than many full frame cameras and you need to spend the same or even more money on lenses that have usable light performance indoors. I made the mistake of getting into m43 cameras several years ago and will not be returning anytime soon.

I think this is true for many users but not all. If you like to carry 70-200 focal range daily, or especially if you like more telephoto reach than that, then MFT makes a lot of sense. I don’t want to travel without that range and I don’t want to carry the full frame version of these lenses. If I get twice the photos cause of how easy the camera is to carry, I’m not concerned with a small drop in IQ. But if I didn’t shoot above 70mm then the advance mostly vanishes. But I do think that if you are thinking about noise or these minor differences in IQ when looking at a photo, you aren’t looking at a very interesting photo to begin with.

@@TheHybridShooter first of all I LOVE your channel and appreciate greatly your hard work and often rely on your opinions when buying a camera. I am not meaning to be argumentative, I just think it’s strange when people compare the price and suggest that if the price is the same there is no reason for MFT. Nevermind that the price of the lenses is still quite different in many cases. I think there are many advantages to MFT which doesn’t mean it has to be for everyone. There are many times when it makes no sense at all to shoot MFT, but way too much emphasis is placed on differences that are nowhere near as important as a person’s skill. Great photographers (far better than I) who know their equipment get unbelievable results from crop sensors and if I was travelling the world with a backpack I would way rather take a my MFT system to even the lightest offerings from Sony. That said, if I only shot primes, I would choose full frame every day of the week and enjoy the enhanced quality. It’s not that I don’t think these things matter, but I do think that technical IQ has virtually nothing to do with what makes a photo interesting or not, which is I guess what I mean. I am very happy to see the weight and size of full frame lenses come down and I do think that means the full frame is the right choice for many more people than five years ago. I love shooting full frame. But I feel a real physical difference shooting with my very light Sony equipment and my MFT equipment and it really has an impact on my enjoyment over the course of a day or trip. If I was shooting a wedding for a client I’d take full frame. If I went out doing street with one or two primes, I’d likely also take full frame. But if I’m travelling around the world I want 12-35 2.8, 35-100 2.8, 9mm Leica and 25mm Leica. All in a small shoulder bag. And usually throw in the 100-300 for days when it’s relevant. For someone that wants 18-600mm equivalent, no tripod needed, weather sealed, with no single lens costing more than $500 used…there is still an argument for MFT. We are very blessed to live with so much choice. Thanks again for your fine work that showcases the strengths and weaknesses of these cameras. It truly makes it easier for people to make the right decisions when spending so much cash on such an important tool.

@@nolannatashaTV Thank you! The image equality is IMO a very important part of modern photography and I think that it is a shame when an interesting photography is degraded by sub-par image quality. The problem is that the market is shifting to high-end or nothing scenario and there just isn't enough people who appreciate low weight of M43 system. People are either willing to travel with FF equipment or they use smartphones, action cameras and that kind of gear. Lightweight FF cameras such as A7C and upcoming Panasonic equivalent with modern lenses will probably accelerate that transition even further.

The G9 was its own design, the mkII is an S5 design with bits and pieces slapped on. The G9II is listed for more than an S5ii where I live. I had hoped for a lot more. Or less, actually. They should have kept the body, upgraded the AF, kept the sensor, upgraded the viewfinder and the rear screen. That would have been enough for releasing a MkII. The lcd-screen on top was very useful for the type of work I do. It’s gone on the MkII.

Using S5 II body for G9 II is the possible choice. It is a superior design with better ergonomics and build. Streamlining both S and G series is the best thing that Panasonic could have done. It is a direct competitor to the OM1, XH2S and other fast shooting sports and wildlife hybrid cameras. It is priced below both of those cameras and does a lot of thing better than both of those camera. Stabilization is on par or better than the OM1 and miles ahead of the XH2S, video features are on par or better than the XH2S and way better than the OM1, AF is better than both, burst speed faster than any other camera at full resolution.
