Early this month, I traveled interstate for work with all my gear in just one small shoulder bag. G9, 12-35 f2.8, 35-100 f2.8, Olympus 25 and 45 f1.8, and my Leica M9 with Zeiss Distagon 35. Total weight plus batteries and cards? Just over 5kg. A full frame mirrorless system could not give this combination of reach, image quality and versatility in such a small, light package. This is why micro four thirds is my trusted system for work and travel, and why I have been eagerly waiting for the GH6.

The most honest and from the heart out there review ive seen yet! Im really looking forward to the GH6. If it has the lowlight of the GH5s with all the extras then im sold. Otherwise i will buy a second hand GH5s and put it on my gimbal. These cameras are amazing still at 4 years old. 120p would be great but lowlight performance with IBIS in MFT is a game changer

Thanks for publishing so many excellent camera reviews! I hope you might consider publishing a video that compares the Lumix G9 to the Lumix GH5m2, especially in terms of image quality and continuous AF (video and photos). This would be helpful for people using the Lumix G85 or Lumix G9 who are contemplating an upgrade within the Lumix micro-four-thirds family.

Very succinct video. I can’t argue with anything you’ say. I own a G9 and an R6 currently. I do a lot of bird photography these days and in that particular endeavor the M43 has a truly significant size advantage. My G9 with the PL 100-400mm is quite a bit smaller and lighter than the R6 and a Sigma 150-600mm. I had the Canon f11 600mm initially, which was quite light, but found that the low light limitations were just too much for me. I have some shoulder issues and I find that I enjoy carrying and shooting with the G9 and that (at least with the Sigma) that the IBIS is dramatically better. I prefer the look of the video from the G9. The Canon autofocus is much better for certain situations like birds in flight. But for sitting birds the difference isn’t significant. I will admit to being a bit of a Panasonic fanboy but also I am mostly camera brand agnostic. I will use what works the best for me regardless of the name on the camera. I had originally planned to sell my M43 gear but for now I have decided to keep it. Maybe the GH6 will be just what the doctor ordered. Maybe not. My G9 and 800mm equivalent lens will still be small and much lighter to carry when my shoulder is bothering me. If I was a KZfaq creator that only used short lenses I might still stick with Panasonic. They just work. My R6 is not dependable for video. It freezes up and occasionally the single video file recorded to an SD card will have no data. Maybe they will get to G9 levels of reliability with the R6 but they aren’t there yet. I just want things that work. I won’t likely be buying a GH5ii but I likely will pre-order a GH6.

I went from a G9 to a R6. My favourite photography at the time was macro and I had the G9 with the Olympus 60MM, I was more than happy with the results. But then I found myself in situations with the family more and more and felt the low light lacked a bit. Now I’m on the R6 with the 600MM f11 (among others) as I also wanted to test the waters in bird photography. You’re right, the f11 is nice and light (for what it is), but it suffers just after dawn and just before sunset. The limitation of only the central portion having autofocus is fairly annoying as well. I kind of feel I made a mistake switching, for the same weight I could have the G9 plus the 100-400, with the added flexibility a zoom offers. I feel I had better results with the G9 plus Olympus 60 versus the R6 and the Laowa 100MM 2x. I found the last round of firmware updates on the G9 were excellent, with a further AF update to come. I can only hope Panasonic consider releasing a G9 follow up based on the GH6, then I imagine I’ll be right back with a small fast prime in hand to go with it. I’m camera brand agnostic as you say, grew up with Nikon but equally have owned Sony, Canon, Panasonic and Olympus. The lighter setup with M43 does appeal, I can feel it more in my wrist now with the R6 than I ever remember 😐
@ryantang8146
@ryantang8146 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you completely. I have a similar setup with an Olympus EM1X and a Canon R5. For birds in flight, the autofocus of the R5 is superior to the EM1X, but for everything else, it is quite similar and you are right, my R5 also freezes up and also overheats when you use the electronic shutter for extended period of time, it becomes unreliable although it is still a beast of a camera. Don’t forget, a big update is coming for the G9 and I am curious to see whether it further improves its autofocus during BIF situation because it is a lighter setup and for my use, I shoot perched birds more often than BIF so it depends on your priorities.

Great video Hugh! So, many suspect that the GH6 would arrive in Q3 before the holiday season. We are also hearing our first rumors of a Sony A7-IV launching in Sept. Who knows? One thing is for certain, the GH6 and A7-IV are two completely different cameras at the (possible) same $2500 price tag. There is clearly no market overlap between them. I mean, we both know that very few people left MFT for the A7-III and I'm certain that will never change. So yeah, the MFT crowd is rock solid and bulletproof for Lumix and I see no need for them to panic. After all, Lumix DfD fans are manual focus professionals that have no love for ultra fast and super accurate AF anyway. . .

I know a lot of people are underwhelmed, but it still seems like a useful upgrade for some people. (Beyond the video performance, your GH5ii photos look great!). I’m most interested, though, to see whether the used prices will drop for the original GH5 - it still could be a good option depending on one’s use case.

My biggest thing since I do research for ADHD and Athletic Performance is that I can bring in my G9 the 35-100mm f2.8 II lens into a professional sports venue, shoot video without anyone knowing and get footage I can dissect later. I can't do that with any larger sensor camera system because that same lens will violate their 6inch lens rule. I don't have a problem with the CAF right now. For B Roll its perfect and for those sports like golf and baseball where golfers, pitchers and hitters are largely stationary, the AF works fine for me. Now with the GH6, I see a CAF future where Panasonic leaps forward because you could be shooting at 24p and rather than having additional frame for CAF between frames you could have multiple sample depending on lighting due to the faster sensor.... That combined with AI might make the whole AF issue a thing of the past...

Will live streaming directly to YT be really a key feature of this camera? People looking for such a professional look will also want to have a second camera signal to mix, I think. Those who are fine to do live streamings with only one camera will probably use a mobile phone setup with a hq camera. For some professional use cases IP streaming will be more interesting if this can be combined with other pana IP cameras and control units.

I bought some more lenses for my G9 two days ago. That conduct means I'm betting on Panasonic further improving it's DoD or going to hybrid autofocus at some point in the future. I very likely will buy full-frame equipment for photographing birds in flight, and for the benefits of a larger sensor. I am also thinking of fixing the shutter on my Nikon FE. Sony and Canon have troubles of their own.

Hugh, thank you for this overview, clear-minded as always. What would you (all) think do these announcements mean for hobby MFT photographers? (1) MFT is not dead?! To me it would be pity but no big drama, anyway. It will still take me some years to fully master my G9. After that I'll be an old man and switch to a small but shamelessly expensive Leica kit ;-) (2) Good to hear from the 25-50/1.7, new lenses are more important than new cameras?! To me lenses are companions for decades. Love to have lots of them to go out and play with. But this one in particular seems only for videographers. Guess it will be to harsh for decent portraits, right? (3) With MFT Panasonic is now exclusively focussing on videographers?! So I hope at least for some lenses to be good for stills, too - like surprisingly the 10-25/1.7 turned out to be (in combo with the "God smacked" 50-200, thank you Hugh!). That said I will not end without mentioning that a real GX8 successor would be the best contradiction Panasonic can make.

I am just waiting to have my cake and eat it too. Basically just waiting on a G9 with unlimited recording, handheld high res mode, fully articulating screen(this one should be obvious but the S1/R have shown that this is not a foregone conclusion for Panasonic), phase detect sticky af, and keep my fav parts like the top LCD, stills friendly shutter button, and unmatchable ergonomics even compared to bodies released since it's launch. I would buy into a system that has all of that and be happy probably for life tbh. The glass is already there. And even where it isn't Panasonic seems to be filling in the gaps.

It's a very interesting time for people, like myself, that bought the Panasonic G9 during the 2019 Black Friday. I only have the kit Panasonic Leica 12-60mm f/2.8-4 and the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 and now I have to decide what to do going forward because I need a long telephoto lens and renting the Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8 for a two-week trip is almost a quarter of the price of the brand new lens, at least where I'm living. So do I go for the Panasonic Leica 50-200mm f/2.8-4 or the Olympus 40-150mm f/2.8 and stick with MFT? Or should I switch for something like the Fujifilm X-T4 and buy a couple of lenses for four times the budget? Or go directly to Canon's R6 with virtually no increase in resolution, but with better AF (especially when shooting black Labs running, which is about 80% of my photography) and the corresponding price tag? Until several days ago, I was sold on the R6, but now I have new questions, like should I wait for the GH6 and its new sensor? Or buy the PanaLeica 50-200mm and use it as a stop-gap until a more compelling R6mkII might appear?

First time I watched you. You are knowledgeable and fluent in presenting expert information, more than lots of stuff I've watched! Well structured video and fine method of analysis. What do we do if we don't do this stuff commercially so simply don't have budgets to get rid of our lenses and buy a new set for a different ecosystem? I'd buy the G9 if it was updated to have wireless streaming and unlimited recording but looks like Panasonic wants product differentiation between photo and video to some degree. I personally think they can't afford to do that with people leaving for full frame and APS-C mirrorless. I don't have the GH5 or G9 but an older G series and access to a GH4 so the jump in the upgrade is bigger. Do you recommend I go for the GH5ii? I mainly do general photos/travel videos with the Leica 12-60mm used in the video shoot you included here but do portraits, low light and interview recordings with primes that are faster than f2. I'll appreciate your advice on what to get next! It will be a push on the wallet if I start a new system from scratch...so not sure what to do at this juncture. Thanks!

There is a difference between what you’d like to do and what you NEED to do. If you don’t need remote streaming or wireless recording, stand par with what you have and be happy. 😊 If you need unlimited 4K/24p, take a close look at a used G95, currently selling around $750 on eBay. But if you need on location streaming and don’t mind better color science, better IBIS, better AF, and more video capability to boot, yes: get the GH5 II.

@@3BMEP That has really thrown into the picture something I'd not given thought to. The G95 is ignored as most talk is about the G9 and GH series. I had a look and see it has the same sensor as the G9 so straight up, still pics should look identical? It's got Vlog pre-installed so that's great. It can do 8 bit rather than 10 bit on the G9 so will I see a difference in video quality? If I get it cheap at used price then one option might be to get the G95 for longer recordings and also get a used G9 for shorter travel video and photography (higher ibis) and both together would cost near enough to a new GH5ii. It gives a 2 cam set up if required. The on location wireless is not vital and I can use a PC/laptop with the Cam link you suggested for most uses. I'd really appreciate if you could advise on what I've come up with here. Thanks!

It is still the only camera with both 4K UHD AND C4k (True cinema 4K resolution) even after 40 new models released by Sony, Canon since Feb. 2014 ! More reliable for videos than Canon R5 at almost 3 times the price (No overheat shutdowns !) Still weatherproof, but now has direct broadcast using your mobile phone on location. (No need for lap top or ATEM. Everyone said M43 system is dead but pros who are use to Manual focus now find everything they need for serious documentary / commercial as touch to focus is now perfectly smooth (without hesitation). So it's not just manual focus. The IBIS is still the best in the world. Improved colour (Better than Sony, and Vlog is included. 60p at 4k 10 bit Even stronger battery than the GH5. Better stills quality than previous GH5 (DR). More reliable IBIS than Sony's A1 that is currently having Ibis ISSUES NOT WORKING INTERMITTENTLY (should be fixed by firmware at some point) The nearest Camcorder with all of those features would cost over $12,000 body only, The new GH5 mk 2 is impressive.

The DJI mic is designed principally for voice - interviews and on-camera reporting or blogging. It is not necessary nor the most appropriate for ambient sound recording. Ask yourself: “will I want to out these mics on other people?” If the answer is “no,” it is not the right mix for you.

It really comes down to just two things: all else being equal, how much do you need and are willing to pay for superior AF; and when? You know what we think about the GH5, but the pandemic created new revenue streams (and new production pressures) which made highly performant AF, especially in real time, critical. So while we are keeping our GH5, we just ordered an a7s III with a single 50mm f/2.5 G for that purpose. We'll re-evaluate where things when the GH6 comes out.

Meanwhile, I do hope Sony releases a firmware update to add DCI 4K to the A7SIII since there’s enough resolution there but knowing them, they’ll probably wait until the A7SIV. I mean even my A7RIV hasn’t gotten a firmware update that has done much at all, no new menus, no new video features. Completely different mentality to firmware updates that Sony has, much more similar to Nikon and Canon than Panasonic and Fuji

After more than 4 years of using the GH5, I'm surprised how many little new tricks they teached this old work horse. I expect most of this will be also in the GH6. I'm also surprised that they don't went the way that everybody has to have 8k and went with something around 24MP and much higher readout speed for the GH6.

Well done and informative as always, Hugh. Overall, I can't help but think the GH5 II is a "stem the tide" offering to prevent what Thom Hogan refers to as "leakage" to other offerings until the GH6 rolls out. The big question on everyone's mind is whether Panasonic will ever implement phase-detect AF. Unfortunately, I've observed many Japanese manufacturing companies suffer from "not invented here" syndrome, including Honda Motor, high-end audio companies, and Oly's refusal to offer anything but M4/3 cameras. I think it's a manifestation of the cultural behavior of not wanting to lose face. Cheers.

Hey, Stephen! Hope you’re doing well. It may be about saving face, it may be about finance, some combination of both - or something else entirely. Whatever the reason, it has negatively impacted their sales, which is a shame.

The 10-25 f1.7 and 25-50 f1.7 will be amazing glass for any situation and then the 50-200 for pleasure. Nice overview. But I'd disagree that a massive update to its AF system is the one thing the Gh5 needs... I use the Gh5 regularly, and neither I, nor anyone I know with this camera, use the AF, and wouldn't use it even if it was better. It's just not a part of the workflow for narrative/commercial videography. Certain types of travel videographer or youtuber/streaming would use it, but for my use case I'd prefer better color science or low light performance.

It's so bizarre. If Panasonic implemented a PDAF (or similar variant) CAF system, the upcoming GH6 would be nigh invincible for so many users. Owning many thousands of dollars of MFT glass, I'm torn every damned time a new annoucement comes out. I simply cannot trust CDAF autofocus for anything that matters, and yet I love so many more aspects of the G9 (in my case) camera and workflow.

The original point of MFT was the size and weight (and being able to pack more features in). Your right, the market has become more blurred and camera companies are not holding back as much as they used to so now you are getting full-frame sensor bodies for the same weight or less, but the lenses are bulky. If they put some focus on slower lenses but with the better build quality and features like weather sealing you would remove most of the benefits with MFT as you could have a set of travel lenses and a set for more critical work. As it stands I still use MFT but also use full-frame canon. I probably shoot more on MFT due to size and weight. In a way I'd prefer Panasonic to acknowledge this by also bringing something out like a successor for the gm5, I only require the EVF at the back and can use a phone to check the photos or video later if I want to, that space by removing the rear screen could be used to squeeze in 5axis stabilisation, better processor, sensor and heat management.

Micro Four Thirds has lenses that are already ultra compact and very capable, that cannot still be met by full frame due to physics. Sure there are the larger bulkier offerings of late, but those are meant for people who are more interested in specific types of shooting, that obviously does not require compactness. Full frame systems have produced smaller and lighter systems, but in all honesty most have heating issues. They offer lenses that are smallish, but not necessarily smaller. However, the larger lenses are significantly larger than their m4/3 counterparts, and twice to three times as much. Basically it truly is all relative… …

I thoroughly dislike whack-a-mole product display: it's like someone shoving stuff into one's face! Just show properly composed pictures of the item in question, spliced into the video, already (not a swipe at you, Hugh, as your videos are blessedly free of such shenanigans)! I used to have a couple of G9s and several spectacular lenses by Panasonic/Leica and Olympus. They were technological wonders, capable of amazing results. Lately, it seems that all that matters is autofocus, and the many other qualities of modern cameras are pushed aside all too often. I wonder how anyone got properly focused photographs of sport and wildlife in the age before autofocus. Maybe some skill was involved? I gave up my micro four-thirds gear only because I was running too many systems (did I mention I suffer from terminal GAS), and decided to cut back a little. As a primarily portrait, travel and landscape photographer, I fortunately do not need blazingly fast tracking autofocus, nor do I indulge in video. Thus my Leica SL2-S and Nikon Z cameras more than satisfy my needs. Even the Leica, with its "inferior" autofocus seems to preternaturally find the iris of the subject's nearest eye 100% of the time. And what a joy it is to use, with its minimalist button count and futz-free menu system. I am lucky in the sense that all my photography is done for enjoyment, so if I don't enjoy using a camera, no matter how good it is, out it goes!
